Good - I can get a piddley assed toon into a random heroic in a
heartbeat and unless the group is slipshod we can waltz through the
place and the troon can get some nice emblems and reputation and loot
and gold.

Bad - I can't get a specific toon into a specific raid

Ugly - I can opnly joinm the actuall LFG channel whilst being in town
- oh yeah, we have discussed this issue before/

Yupp, I love it. Just got my "the patient" title and am now running for the
perky pug companion :-)

> Bad - I can't get a specific toon into a specific raid

Why not? When you open your LFG frame there should be a drop down list in
which you can choose "random heroic", "random normal" or "specific dungeon".
Choose the last of these three and then tick which dungeons you're
interested in.

Works like a charm, I've used it for FoS, PoS, HoR on both normal and
heroic. I can imagine that you might need a longer wait than for the random
run if you select a particularly disliked instance.

Yeah, that is a shame.

Sure you can. The LFR tool is now separate from LFG. Try typing
/lfr and you'll get it. There is a way to navigate to it without
typing, but /lfr is easy.

Yeah dungeons, fine I can choose those all day. But there are no raids
in there.

A tool? Or a chat channel?

I shall try this. I wish I knew this last night. I might have been
able to get that last 345 ICC rep I needed for that Ashen Ring.

I know what I am doing tonight sometime before I go to bed.

Okay, let's get the filth out of our minds!

(BUT IT'S A WONDERFUL FILTH!!!)

OH! OH! OH!

It's a tool. It's not cross-realm however, and it does impose gear
limitations (though Blizzard is far more realistic about their gear
limitations than the idiots in trade chat wanting a 2800+ GS for
Naxx10).

Regular heroics have gear limits too though. A guildy's alt hit 80
over the weekend and it wouldn't let him into heroics yet in the gear
he was wearing :). Kinda sad given that 1 lagging DPS wouldn't hurt
most groups and you can get a useable gear set within a weekend IF you
have access to random heroics, but oh well. My lock just made it into
Northrend this weekend too, and I'm doing the random regulars every
evening. Even at low levels you can get 2 Emblems of Triumph per day
for the randoms, so by the time you hit 80 you should have enough for
1 or 2 very nice epics. I figure if I have 2 badge epics + 2 or 3 BOE
ones from the AH then that should be plenty to tip the scales enough
for it to let me start heroics at 80 on that toon :).

That's a different tab, *should* be available under your Raid tab.

Duh. I should learn to read. Sorry.

For a Looking For Raid feature try /lfr or the button in the raid frame.

To have somebody in the raid tab you need to either be invited into an
existing raid or create one yourself. To do that you need to invite at least
one person into a group, then go to the raid tab and click "convert to
raid". You should now see 8 groups of five containing the members of your
group as "group 1", you can now start inviting more people and move them
around to different groups.

As a general rule, dps running heroics are shooting for the number 1500.

That's not gearscore. That's average sustained dps. When you can reliably
do more than that, you're ready to be the weak sister in someone's heroic
group. Once you start getting gear *from* heroics, you'll start to drift
up into the 2k+ range pretty quickly.

I assume he was commenting that the LFR tool is underused, not that he
couldn't figure out how to view his raid frames.

DAMN YOU BLIZZ!! I KNOW HOW TO HEAL!!!

I only need 345 rep to get to Friendly and get the ring.

Bah! I know someone who will drag me along for at least that 345.

Wow...I could go as dps in my tank gear if 1500 is all you want!

Well, everyone has to gear up somehow before heroics, and you can do
that on the AH. Sure, a bit annoying that the gear you're buying will
be replaced shortly, but on principle if the gear check applies to
tanks and healers (and it most certainly should) then it must apply to
dps too. Think of the outlay of cash as going toward future heroic/
emblem gear rather than the AH gear ;-)

That's all that's needed for a lot of the heroics. People who ask for
more are just wanting an easy time of it (which is up to them of course).

Sure. Like I said, that's a minimum dps score to start doing heroics. Any
less than that and you're dragging down your party.

Some of the harder heroics require a bit more than that, but if you can
bring 1500, you'll at least be pulling your weight.

What are reasonable numbers for a healer? I'm wondering if my new 80 shaman
is ready.

I'll try to log her out in her resto gear so you can see her current setup.

I cannot emphasize this point enough. Please, please, please do your
part to make sure you are ready for heroics, and are just not going to
be a leeching dead weight. Get some BoE blues/epics, PVP gear,
whatever it takes - but at least make the effort. If you don't know
what your dps is, get recount and go pound on a training dummy. If
your gear is fine, but your dps is still low, get advice on your
rotation. But don't let your eagerness, laziness, ignorance or
inconsiderateness waste everyone else's time just because you want to
save some of your own time/gold.

Funny story (sort of in a "I didn't know whether to laugh or cry"
way)... I was randomly put in to heal a heroic Gundrak group. When I
zoned in, I noticed the group was already in, and clumped in the
general area where the first boss would be pulled. Uh oh, I thought.
They must have wiped on the poison nova boss, and the healer quit. The
dps must be really low. We managed to get him down in what seemed like
2 minutes, with all but the tank and a dps dead. Two of the dps were
in the 700-800 dps range, with the tank and the other dps around 1.5k.
For a point of reference, 700-800 dps is what T4 gear did at level 70.

The funny part of the story is that the Eck encounter went on so long,
he hard enraged... I had no idea he even had a hard enrage - I had
never seen that before in over a year. I actually LOL'd.

Can it show HPS including overhealing too? If not, then it would be
very difficult to measure your potential as you'd need the incoming
damage to be able to measure it properly.

My shaman did 1500ish dps on a target dummy (ok a lvl 70 one,
misschance on lvl 80 dummies is a touch high for accuracy) at lvl
76... never been in a group on her, I'm assuming it'll be a bit less
in an actual fight situation but yeah, 700-800 is pretty pathetic.
Especially given Recap which I use tends to show dps as lower than
Recount which most other people use, seeing I consider 1200ish
perfectly acceptable for a heroic (it's what Recap showed most people
as doing when my old guild were running heroics in blues and a few
epics at the start of WotLK)

Lol. I probably need to go and sleep. First I miss important bits in two
posts that I reply to making my post totally off and then I misinterpret
something so thoroughly that I wonder whether I was even thinking when I
posted that :)

It all depends on your tank.

My Pally dinged 80 and I re-speced from ret/prot to holy/prot specs.
Healed a Heroic Nexus run straight off the bat. Only other time I'd
healed as a pally was at level 70 pre-wotlk in Old Hillsbrad. I then
got in with some guildies and first ran H-ToC. Only the pally tank
was left standing after the Black Knight fight, but otherwise there
was no complete wipe. I had maybe 1200 bonus spell power at that
time. We then run a bunch of other heroics and because the tank was
so well geared, I got to spend half the fights trying to dps.

My Shammy's been healing in resto through a pile of random heroics
since they had around 1500 spell power (including Earth Living weapon
buff) without too much trouble, so I suspect you'll be fine so long as
you've got half a clue as to what you're doing. ; )

Get a good tank and you can pretty much just sit back and keep Earth
Shield up on them. : )

Recount will list overhealing done. It also lists healing done and
hps. And it also lists heals taken.

But really, as a Shammy healer, you can't get a completely accurate
measure of your healing potential without just going out and trying
it. Standing in town spamming heals on yourself then checking your
over-healing's hps (though recount may not have hps for over-heals
explicitly shown, there's probably enough info for you to calculate it
yourself) will start to give you an idea I guess, but it'll be short
of what you're capable of as it won't include Earth Shield. Then
again, it may be more than what you can manage in a actual combat
situation where you may be having to move around and heal more than
just one target. *shrug*
And none of that will take into account how good your tank is.

That's reassuring. I've been healing in WG (because I suck at PvP melee)
and it's been a breeze as long as no one notices me (they rarely do, and
I'm good at running).

I'm using Clique+Grid and the whack-a-mole healing mechanism that gives me
makes it effortless.

I just wish the code supported more mouse buttons so I could bind the more
specialized spells to my extra buttons. (I think the limitation of 5
buttons is in both Windows and WoW. The USB protocol effectively supports
an endless supply of buttons, using a linked list of button descriptors.)

With support for more buttons to be used with Clique, I'd get one of these:

I've found I'm able to get by well enough in clique with just 5
buttons and just the shift and ctrl modifiers.
Shift RC = Earth Shield
RC = Riptide
Shift LC = Lesser Healing Wave
Shift RC = Healing Wave
Ctrl LC = That cleanse disease and poison spell
Button 4 = Chain Heal
Middle Button = Purge

Hmm, and I think that's all my Shammy uses...

Priest in his holy spec has a pile more, but still manages with a 5
button mouse.

How do you manage to inspect, trade, invite, etc with your plain right

Same here. I use RMB to cast spells on my characters so I have set up

You can tell Clique to use only certain frames and leave other frames
alone. I have Clique set up to work with Grid frames but not the standard
party/target/self/focus frames.

Ah, that's useful. I wonder if how long it would take me to get used
to right click to cast at some times and not others.

Then again, I actually like my keybinds, just need more of them, and
so getting a mouse modifier working is my goal.

Sometimes, while waiting for people to arrive for an instance/raid, I
inspect random people. I kinda drives me crazy when I see unenchanted/
ungemmed gear. Maybe not enchants so much - perhaps you don't know an
enchanter or perhaps for the rep ones, like SoH shoulders, you just
don't have the rep yet - but ungemmed gear drives me nuts. Okay,
perhaps you just got that item two minutes ago, but when five of your

Sometimes my Paladin tanks and sometimes he heals. The funniest
dungeons are where, when he's healing, the tank severely over-gears
the place, but the DPS is weak, so what you have are fights that take
forever with the tank taking no damage needing to be healed, so you
just kinda stand around. :P

Argh yeah, it's fair enough on one item, but on several it just smacks
of laziness, it's not like green gems cost much. As for enchants, well
I'm guilty of leaving things unenchanted if a temporary enchant will
cost a fair bit (hi weapons, I'm looking at you), but if you can't get
shoulder enchants for lack of rep, then armor kits are your friend -
12 or 18 stamina beats nthing :-)

That's the good thing with being a priest healer - in those situations
I stick renew on the tank and start smiting :-) What's not so good is
when I look at the damage meters after and notice I wasn't last...
which has happened before now lol.

Try this addon out:

http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/elitistgroup.aspx

When you join a 5man, it will pop up a quick display of everyone as they
come in, including a checkmark/x for gems/enchants, show spec, etc. You
can also set ratings of 1-5 and put notes about the person not just for
yourself, but you can set it to share within party/raid/guild channels.

The screenshot on the site shows what happens when you pull up a single
person manually by targeting them and typing /eg or you can type /eg
<name> to pull a specific person out of your history. The group/raid
version is a much more condensed version of that SS, specifically not
showing all gear.

Ooh I like the look of that, always love the stats side of the game,
don't like the elitist attitudes some have about it, but it's
interesting seeing what kind of gear people are using to get an idea
what to expect from them.

Admittedly it won't help much in my lowbie groups... had an amazing
druid in Stockades earlier who took hybrid to extremes, all points in
resto, half agi gear, half int, joined the group as tank but was
casting wrath at stuff till we told him to go bear... even then he
said cat was better :-/ Needless to say that was not one of the best
groups I've ever been in..... first person I've used ignore on, not
because he was an unpleasant person but just because I can't face
trying to heal him again :-P

Alternatively you can tell Clique to ignore the standard unit-frames and
only use grid. Offcourse then it will be a problem in a raid with a
person not in your group.

And I'd wager that on many at least relatively busy servers there should
be enchanting scrolls in the AH too, so if not knowing a jewelcrafter
is not a viable reason for not gemming, why should enchanting be? :D

(I know they're not all the same, since especially after the group DE
option most people really have an easy way of getting enchanting materials,
whereas for most gems you need a jewelcrafter to get the raw material)

The scrolls are however usually a lot higher cost than the value of
the materials, so I can appreciate a not-too-wealthy character wanting
to wait until they find an enchanter to help them out. I tend to just
make sure I have a character with enchanting so I can do my own
enchants... thank goodness for scrolls I say, used to be a nightmare
getting enchants done if none of the people I knew could do the one
enchant I was looking for (which usually my alt could do, grrr)

The standard unit-frames only show your own group though. (which I was

simultaneously but that would clutter the interface a bit (imho).

Ah, sorry, I misunderstood. I thought that you meant that you'd be

standard frames.

What you actually meant was that you'd have problems accessing the

Dang, WTB your servers enchanting market then, mine's infested with

Ooh, that's true, I forgot about scrolls.

Having said that, they can be expensive, and I will say that, um, it
never ceases to amaze me how broke I see so many level 80s. I know
I've been in several raids where someone can't afford to repair their
gear. Or I'll hear someone say they have 10 gold to their name. I've
never really understood this - what the heck are people spending their
gold on?

Hehe depends on the enchant but I've certainly found a few where I'm
confident I'm making a good profit. I don't sell many scrolls since
it's kinda clunky to figure what to craft and what the mats are worth,
but my guesstimates are that there's a few recipes that are sold for
double or more the value of their mats.

I can only assume they're people who grind to 80 and never quest,
never do dailies, never work on rep, always buy all mats instead of
farming them, etc. Granted I rarely farm now, but only because I make
so much profit from crafting that I may as well buy them and make
more, faster.

My current rule is that for anything iLevel 245 or above, I spring for
the top end enchants, since I'm less likely to be replacing them too
soon. For anything lower than that, I get the second tier enchants,
which are usually just a couple of points in the difference, but cost
about a tenth of the gold.

Since I'm an transmutionist, though, gems are always top notch, since
it's just lost profit I'm paying there.

Yeah my rule was anything epic gets top notch enchants, but that

it's more like 226+ gets it, since I don't raid, meaning not all slots

I mostly don't bother with enchants or gems until I get around to it.
I don't raid and the emblem gear means you're overgeared for most of
the heroics anyway even without gemming and enchanting it. I've got
more interesting things to spend my money on, like getting more of my
characters riding skill up to 300.

Which doesn't mean that all my gear is ungemmed and enchanted. With
my characters that are still gearing up, I tend to get around to
gemming and enchanting it sooner but once the average item level is up
around 200 or more, gemming that new 226 or 232 piece only tends to
happen when I'm in the mood for running around.
