So the question is has Microsoft discontinued the Core or is this a
Best Buy decision only.... My bet is the Core is going away. I've said
before a console without some sort of mass storage just doesn't make
sense anymore. I know two people who have purchased Core systems and
they both added a hard drive shortly after. Is anyone in the ng
running a XBox 360 Core without a hard drive?

I certainly hope they do away with the Core. It was a dumb idea to
begin with and it's still a dumb idea almost 2 years later.

I had a lengthy debate with someone on this newsgroup about why it was
a dumb idea. The guy was SO adamant that it was the right decision by
Microsoft and that games didn't need the hard drive... and claimed
that games would never be gimped by the lack of one.

I THINK it was that Sammus MacMouldenous or whatever's original alter
ego, but I can't be sure. It was my first personal observance of an
Xbox 360 zealot almost to the level of Blig Merk for the PS3.

Microsoft said last week there are no plans to discontinue the core.

It was Jonah. To my knowledge, he is the only one in here who actually
purchased a core but he purchased the HDD the same day.

Because they don't want to sound like Sony. Everyone here knows they are
going to discontinue the core. The price drop is to get rid of what they
have left.

They're dropping the price of all versions.

Was it? I don't think it was him... the guy I debated with lives in
the U.K. I think Sammus does, too. Also, the guy I debated with had a
Core with no HDD and kept going on about how great Oblivion was even
without the HDD. To that, I countered that Oblivion has to constantly
load (very bad in the outdoors areas where it's loading every second)
even when you have an HDD because of the possibility of a Core owner.

He still kept going on about how it's not necessary for gaming, blah
blah blah. Essentially, he came off as a Microsoft mouthpiece. He
basically reiterated everything that Moore had said years back and now
Moore's over at EA...

And the Core's got the SMALLEST of the rumored drops. Elite gets
$30... Premium $50... Core only $20. WTF?!

What?
It wasn't $50 across the board?

I believe Cliffy B and crew argued HEAVILY with Microsoft that they
had to come out with a 512MB system in order to do Gears right. That
added cost to the system, and the decision was to drop the harddrive
with the system, making it an add on. It was done to keep costs
down.

And when it comes to a choice between a harddrive and twice the RAM,
booting the harddrive was the rght choice.

Well, actually I purchased a Core unit in late April of
last year. Was the first 360 I saw at that point and
so decided to get it, DOA 4 (used) and a memcard.
It was a couple of weeks afterwards that they (Gamecrazy)
had HDs in stock, so when they did, I got it for 51 dollars
and made up the remainder in trade.

In retrospect, I don't regret the purchase. Even giving
the fact that you can save on the HD, I prefer to make my
saves and configuration data on the memcard, just in case
the unthinkable happens ^_<.

Nor do I think that it is a bad thing that the Core
exists. Despite how some people seem to believe that
having high-speed internet is simply a matter of choice,
'tis not the case, unfortunately. Many live in
areas that don't have high-speed internet (I have relatives
who seem to live in the center of BFE, and can't get the
amenities like cable and high-speed internet). To them,
a Premium system would be pretty useless if they can't download
updates, micro transactions and XBLA games. And how many
games won't play unless an HD is installed?

So ultimately there is a need for the Core system, and
as long as people buy it, then there will continue to
be a need to stock it.

As a programmer, I know that they made the right choice when working
under those specific constraints. BUT even when they were designing
the system hard drives were dirt cheap so including the hard drive
across the board would have upped the cost MAYBE $25 for the Core.

I don't remember if it was Epic that argued with Microsoft but I do
recall reading about one developer really pushing for the increased
memory.

This price cut is a flipping joke.
http://www.n4g.com/xbox360/News-56298.aspx

The pictures, taken from an unidentified publication, confirm the Premium
pack at USD 349.95, add a 30 dollar drop for the Elite (to USD 449.95), and
a 20 buck drop for the Core - to USD 279.95.

You also have to remember the Core came out in 2005 ,thats almost light

What kind of price cut is that?
It makes no sense. Why not just cut every unit $50 across the board?
I guess there is no truth to the rumor that MS is discontinuing the core
with it only having a $20 price cut.

It was Sammus... I dug up my old posts and found our lengthy debate
about the wonders of the Xbox 360 hard drive. He was very insistent
that the hard drive is completely unnecessary and that Microsoft was
absolutely 100% correct in not including it. I wonder if he still
thinks this way considering how poorly the Core is selling and how
likely the Core will be discontinued sometime next year?

Maybe this is the reason for the GTA IV delay? Microsoft kills the
Core and Rockstar re-tools GTA to require the hard drive?

WTF? That is so stupid if that were true. Remember when there were just
certain games you couldn't play if you didn't have the right accessory for a
game? How many core owners do you think wouldn't run out and purchase a
Hard Drive if they knew they were going to need one for GTA? DOn't penalize
the rest of us for a few cheap bastards. Make them purchase a HDD or not
play the game.

Seems like the most logical solution.... especially when there are
already games that do just this (Phantasy Star Online). However, it
benefits neither Microsoft or Rockstar to not have it run on the Core
because most likely the people who bought the Core (i.e. the frugal)
are those who would be the most resistant to spending $160 to play one
game.
My solution all along has just been to cripple the game on the Core as
necessary, adding loading screens or what have you (this is assuming
that the problem is keeping the game from ever having to load once
started, as promised). The game can detect which configuration the
user is running and adjust accordingly.

You mean Phantasy Star Universe and not the amazing
Dreamcast game PSO that consumed a year of my life
and was able to be played over a manly 56k modem!
