Report: Xbox 360 in danger of becoming distant third
08/01/2007
A new report released on Tuesday by DFC Intelligence suggests that if
Xbox 360 sales don't pick up, Microsoft will likely blow its one year
lead in the industry and become a distant third in the console war
behind Nintendo and Sony respectively.
"So far in 2007, the news from the Xbox 360 front has not been
encouraging," states the report. "If Halo 3 and other products fail to
drive Xbox 360 sales, the system will soon flirt with numerous
unsavory scenarios, the worst of which is the danger of becoming a
distant third in the video game market share battle."
According to DFC, Microsoft has shipped 1 million Xbox 360s so far
this year. By comparison, Nintendo has shipped 6 million Wii units
followed by Sony's 4 million PS3 units not including systems already
shipped. The report says "if consumers are not lining up to buy an
Xbox 360 this holiday, Microsoft clearly has problems."
It added: "So far in 2007 it is safe to say that the market has
followed what we called the Nintendo Best Case Scenario... In terms of
installed base it looks like the PS3 will be in third place until at
least mid-2008."
The report comes as Microsoft declared record losses this year due to
a costly $1 billion warranty extension for excessive Xbox 360 hardware
issues. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer called the problems "painful" but
that his company will be "world-class" with its hardware moving
forward.
MS did not record loses, their gaming division did. Sony gaming
division is losing money also. MS has reserved the warranty money and
they can afford it.

Nice try BligFuck but you lose again.
Blig is by far the most desperate guy I have ever seen. It seems as though
he will literally die if the PS3 doesn't win. Let's face it, neither PS3 nor
the 360 will win in this generation. The Wii is on the greatest momentum
train the world has seen to date. All we know for sure is that both the PS3
and the 360 will secure a few exclusive that will drive competition but will
lead both consoles to defeat at the hands of Nintendo.

Except the Wii is this generation or a true gaming console.
It falls somewhere between a handheld unit and a iPod.
bilgemerk reading? Not in THIS
universe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is it really appropriate to say that the Wii will win this generation
when it's not even competing for the same consumers as the Xbox 360
and the PS3?
The Wii is either a casual gamers' console or a secondary console to a
gamer who owns the Xbox 360 and/or the PS3... or a temporary console
for a gamer who owns/owned an Xbox, GameCube and/or PS2 and is waiting
for the right time to purchase the Xbox 360 and/or the PS3.
Does anybody really think a person who owned/owns an Xbox or PS2 and
hasn't gone broke is really going to decide to purchase a Wii and
never purchase an Xbox 360 and/or PS3?
I'm one. The PS2 is the only console I had from the last generation. I
have a Wii, and currently have no intention of getting either of the
other two.
If there is a decent number of games I want on the others by the end
of the generation (using last-gen as a guide, I think the PS3 will,
while the 360 won't), and they keep backwards-compatibility in the
next gen, then I will probably get a PS4 or Xbox-3.
If it was appropriate to slam the GameCube for failing to win against the
PS2 and Xbox, then it's appropriate to say that the Wii is currently
winning against the 360 and PS3.
The same exact argument about Nintendo going after a different market
segment than Xbox/PS2 was made - and rejected by the anti-Nintendo fans.
And now that argument has come back to bite them.

Yes. Plenty of families bought the PS2 because of Eye Toy. Now you've
got the Wii with its motion controllers. Neither the PS3 nor 360 have
anything like that, nor do they really have a decent selection of
children friendly games.
Again, these same arguments were made - and rejected - about the Game
Cube. So now then, why should we change?

It's not broken. It's...advanced.
So you haven't ruled out getting one of the new systems, then. You
said you currently have no intention of getting a PS3 or Xbox 360 but
you also say that you'll get one if they have a decent number of
games.
I contend there are very few gamers who haven't just "outgrown" gaming
who are going to say that the Nintendo Wii is the only system they'll
buy this generation.
Hmm... don't remember Nintendo claiming to be going after a different
market from the get go.
I don't think the Game Cube is apples to apples with the Wii at all.
The Wii is clearly designed to be an entirely different species of
game console than the 360 and the PS3. The Game Cube was designed to
compete with its contemporaries (hell, it was technically superior to
the PS2 although not nearly as good as the Xbox).

What percentage of PS2 owners do you think were purchased by families
where the children now wouldn't be "old enough" to no longer require
"children friendly games?"
I think it's likely a lot of those kids have grown up a bit and are
now clamoring to play games like Halo, Lair, MGS (probably not GTA
though... well, maybe they want to play it but their parents aren't
buying into that LOL).
