It's exclusive to the XBOX and will released for the PC *after* the XBOX.

So why have you plopped this into the xbox and gamecube groups then?

From the first pargraph:

"A RUMOUR reported in the February edition of the official Xbox Magazine
(noted by Gamespydaily.com), SUGGESTS that Valve Software are currently
thrashing out a deal with Microsoft to make Half-Life 2 an Xbox exclusive
title."

And the last sentence of the article:

"Still it’s all IDLE SPECULATION at the moment – so watch this space."

(Emphasis is mine in both exceprts.)

Translation: HL2 being an Xbox exclusive is NOT a done deal. Valve could
still say no at any time before the game's release, for all anyone knows.

Moral: Don't believe everything you hear (or read) -- and don't count your
chickens before they hatch. :)

It's still a rumor, and not a very convincing one at that... but
releasing it on the XBox first would be a good move. If they release
it for the PC at the same time, nobody will be interested in buying
the XBox version once they see it running on a PC. :p

If anything at all it will be a limited exclusive. I'm sure more than half
the people that played the original on the PC own a PS2... and would love
to play HL2 on Ps2 instead of upgrading their PC's... I don't think anyone
is willing to go for exclusives anymore... it limits the income on the game.
Which is stupid.

Yes, you're right about that :-) You should compare Splinter Cell PC and XB
running side-by-side, and you'd be terrified by the difference (screenshots
don't do the PC version justice; it runs much better than the XB version).

If MS got an exclusivity contract for HL2, then it'd make no sense to
release the PC and XB version simultaneously, since almost all HL fans are
PC gamers.

Whether HL2 would make millions of PC gamers buy an XB remains a mystery.
One reason why Half-Life is so popular is because of Counterstrike and all
the mods the original game spawned. That sort of experience is impossible on
a console.

MS should try to get other exclusives IMO; exclusives that fill the areas
where the system is lacking (i.e., Japanese RPGs). Sudeki is a start, but
one game isn't enough.

The PS2 userbase is 10x larger than the XB userbase, so no. I think Valve
may want to make the Half-Life brand known to a lot of console gamers, and
limiting it to one console would be a stupid decision IMO. They could take
the Blizzard route (Starcraft Ghost) and make everyone happy while
maximizing their sales and promoting their brand.

But money hats can change all that.

Rockstar probably made more money by keeping the GTA series exclusive to the
PS2. All Sony had to do was giving the amount of money that Rockstar would
have made from the planned Xbox version, and then giving more to keep them
from releasing the series on any other platform. So Rockstar probably
benefitted from that move.

Especially as in this case, the Xbox has nowhere near the userbase of the
PS2. Not allowing yourself access to that potential income is totally
ridiculous...unless MS is going to offer them a sum of $$ that is close to
matching the projected income from sales they would have gained on the PS2,
or also the GC for that matter. Plus if you hold it back from the PC crowd
you are going to piss off the most loyal of the games fanbase, another poor
move IMO...

Ummm, do you know what Sony paid to keep GTA3 off of other consoles? Do you
think that was free?

Total number of units sold is only part of the profits a developer makes,
and the bottom line is that they will always do what they think will make
them the most money.

Never gonna happen. If Half-Life 2 is as easy to mod as the original
Half-Life, it will be on the PC first. The userbase of Half-Life alone
on the PC is utterly amazing, thanks to Counter-Strike.

It's only crazy to limit your income, on a console with a small userbase.
This is the number 1 reason why there are very few XBox exclusives, What
developer (aside from Microsoft owned developers) would be crazy enough to
create an exclusive, where their usebase is so small.

I can understand Sony being able to bag exclusives (GTA series for example),
as the developer gets a good deal from Sony, and the publisher/developer has
a large userbase (40 million consoles, is a mighty large userbase).

Why the hell would valve want to make an exclusive for XBox with a userbase
of 3% of the console market, unless Microsoft are basically backdoor buying
the game with enough wonga, so valve don't care, in which case, this really
shows how desperate Microsoft are becoming....

I think it makes a lot of sense for game companies to produce exclusively
for PS2 when Sony puts up some cash. It doesn't really make any sense for
them to do it for other consoles, since there are so much fewer of them. Out
of the top ten selling games for all consoles, including GBA, nine are for
PS2. The sheer number of PS2s out there certainly is a determining factor in
that. It makes sense for companies to be exclusive for XBOX or Gamecube for
limited periods of time, and then put out versions for PS2, since they can
pocket a little cash and also get some exposure for their game. Of course,
that only works if they make a good game, because word of mouth would kill
it.

Maybe, but MS controls whatever goes on Live. Taking away the freedom that
the first HL enjoyed would make it less popular IMO. The fact that you have
to play for Live would also make the game less popular, since you don;t have

That's a pretty stupid argument. What are they supposed to do? Not try?
Microsoft is being aggressive and that's a good thing.
In order to intice people to buy your console you have to have major

My point was, Sony, with their base of consoles don't need to try very hard
to get exclusives (nor pay big $$$) , I'm sure games developers are lining

Although Sony may be having developers lining up at the door, I think that
Rockstar really nailed Sony it making the GTA series exclusive to the PS2.
Remember that first Rockstar announced GTA for Xbox (in one of their annual
reports), then pulled it back. THEN it was rumored that GTA was going to be
made for the GameCube (this one actually got printed as gossip!), then that
got pulled back. Rockstar waited a LOOOONG time before announcing that the
GTA series was going to be exclusive to the PS2 for the console market for
the next two release (or was it three?).

That did not come cheap!

You may be right about other exclusives but I think Rockstar made out like a

Not counting the money they saved, they probably got about the profit they

True. But one reason Half-Life became so popular was that
Valve/Sierra released the source to the game as well. Releasing the
source is what gave way to Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, etc., they
all started out as user created mods. Some of them, like
Cunter-Strike and Day of Defeat, were good enough to become part of
the actual game insofar as retail sales and such.

How would Valve/Sierra/Gearbox/whoever else may be working on HL2
release the source for a console version? And even if they did no
user created mods would show up, since you can't very well do anything
with the source to the console game unless you have a development kit
to work with (well, MAYBE those with Linux on their Xbox could do
something, but I doubt it).

The Half-Life phenomenon really comes from all the mods for the game.
In all honesty, I don't think a console version will do nearly as well
as the PC version. I didn't like Half-Life on the PS2 very much.
Yeah, it moved smooth, and had that neat co-op mode, but it didn't
have the things *I* play Half-Life for: Team Fortress Classic,
Counter-Strike, and Day of Defeat (granted DoD wasn't out when they
released the PS2 version, but I rarely ever play normal Half Life or
Opposing Force, just the online mods). Even given how nice it would
look/sound on the Xbox, I would rather get the PC version over any
console version any day, simply for the mods that would be released in
the future.

Probably thanks to TFC, actually. Counter Strike came along quite
awhile after TFC and valve-style online play made this the title that
it was.

Honestly, if this game makes it to ANY platform this year, there will
be a lot of shocked gamers, myself included. While it's a rumor, it's
definately a great idea from MS's perspective. Furthermore, XBL
support could be grafted in, this would almost be *the* title of
2003(4?5?).

This is the type of title that could dramatically increase the Xbox
userbase if Xbox-only for 6 months, but I just have a feeling that if
it were PS2 exclusive (which it likely won't be) it just wouldn't
gather as much steam. My basis for this would partially be because PC
gamers (ie- ME) would be more attracted to Xbox as a console, vs the
PS2 due to technical aspects (built in hdd, ethernet, modding
ability).

From Valve's persepctive, it may be a win-win situation to go
exlusive/early on the Xbox. (once MS pays them).

Most people who are PC gamers will upgrade their PC regardless.

I'd much rather play Half Life on my PC than my PS2 or any console.

The PC offers much better graphics than anything the consoles can crank out,
AND there's the inevitable flood of mods that would follow. Don't forget,
one of the most popular FPS games to date is a free mod to the first Half
Life.

Once it's announced that it's coming to the PC, no one will buy it for
XBox. Well, OK, I'm sure some people will buy it, but come on. If you had
a PC and a Xbox, which would you buy? Oh yeah, and remember, new PC games
tend to cost $40 on average, compared to $50 for console games.

And with a franchise like Half Life, how can it *NOT* be coming to the
PC?

It's not like there's a shortage of games to play. Even if Half Life 2
doesn't make it to the PC until fall, there's plenty of other games to
play - regardless of the platform(s) you own.

Naw, no mystery.

Most PC gamers consider consoles worthless "toys". Considering that the
Xbox won't even let you use a keyboard and mouse - the controller setup of
choice for PC games - I don't see people rushing out to buy an XBox when they
could be using that $200 to upgrade their video card.

What XBox needs to do - and has so far failed to do - is provide gaming
experiences that the PC can't.

Instead, what are XBox's strongest games? Halo, Halo2, Splinter Cell, and
I'm sure, Half Life2. All of which are FPS games. All of which are going
to be released onto a PC with better graphics, online support, etc. So where
is the incentive to buy a Xbox?

Ok, Panzer Dragoon Orta. That's one. DOA Volleyball, ok, that's 2 (well,
for me anyways ;)

As I recall, RPGs was an area where the Dreamcast was really hurting as well.

They'd just released two good ones (Arcadia, Grandia 2) when Sega pulled the
plug on the thing...

Depends if the Xbox allows you to directly access the game files on the HD.

Otherwise, you'd have to get the mod as a patched game disc or something.

They get PAID to have them exclusive, that is part of the deal. MS would
fork the money over to Valve. The developer really doesn't see a hit in
income ideally. The console maker however is hoping more poeple will go out
and buy their console to play that exclusive game, and therefore eventually
but more games, and more games etc etc....

First of all, I bought an Xbox just Friday of last week, and after spending
years as a PC gamer, I finally decided to get away from my pc and look at
the alternatives. After spending all day with pc's at the office, I just
couldn't take going home and hacking through installing a game to play. If
you are spending only 200 bucks to upgrade your PC card then I hate to tell
you this, but the graphics will be just about the same on the XBox. Plus,
the Xbox has HDTV support which you would need to shell out some major
bucks to reproduce off of a PC.

As far as the keyboard and mouse comments go, this is strictly a matter of
personal opinion/preference. I took me a while to get used to, but after
just the weekend (and spending hours on 2 games I bought with the console
all weekend after purchase -something I never did with PC games-), I felt
very comfortable with using a console controller for mechassult.

> What XBox needs to do - and has so far failed to do - is provide

Again, this is a matter of personal opinion. I find that it rivals some pc
games without the hassles of drivers, upgrades and hardware support.

Again this is a matter of personal opinion. This is only apparent in the
current time that the console has been out. Not all people agree that these
games are the best Xbox has come out with. Racing games look beautiful as
well as some of the other (not as) popular titles.

Both are turned based RPG's that have been done 10000 times over and
backwards. People got tired of these by the time they were released. I had
a dreamcast as well for about 6 months (bought mine at the last price drop
before the death and then sold it on ebay shortly before the official
announcement) and played Granida 2. I loved the game and the storyline, but
found the fight scenes rather boring and repetitive after a while
(especially on the last few fights). The Xbox titles coming out however for
2003 are going to blow most of the turn based games out of the water. This
Includes Star Wars KOTOR, Dues EX II, Star Wars Galaxies etc. In my opinion
Xbox is attempting to appeal to a new breed of RPG gamer and get away from
the static turn based games that have made the PS2 so popular. I must say
it is refreshing to finally see more pc like rpg's on a console. I always
loved the Icewind Dale, Diablo, Boulders Gate (owned all of the listed
since their day of release) type customization that the PC versions gave
me.

One thing to say here though is that I seriously doubt that half life 2 is
going to be a xbox only game. To do such a thing would be completely silly
for Valve/Sierra to do considering the popularity of the PC versions. That
would be like the creaters of GTA to say "Ps2 has really done great things
for us, but we are now going to make GTA an xbox exclusive". It just
doesn't make good business sense in my opinion... but then again... as with
most such things... I could be wrong...

Eh? All HDTVs I've seen can take VGA, and HDTV's resolutions are all
supported by video cards anyways - in fact, the video card from my old
200Mhz Pentium could drive a HDTV display.

Furthermore, many video cards also come with DVI outputs which are also
supported by HDTVs.

$200 will buy you a video card capable doing all this in addition to being
able to run any PC game at max resolution and detail for at least the next
2 years, and still come with a pack of 2-5 games, depending on the vendor/OEM
package.

While it is a matter of preference, in general, a mouse and keyboard are
going to provide you with more possibilities, precision and customization
than any console controller setup.

The general consensus from the console gaming community (not just XBox fan
boys) is that these are the best games for the platform.

Yes, racing games in general look and play better on consoles than on the
PC. Unfortunatly, the gaming community feels the better racing games are
not on XBox...

Sports games would be another good example, with all consoles having their
share of excellent games.

So if you were primarily interested in sports and FPS games, then the XBox
would be for you. However there are other genres that just aren't very well
represented on Xbox, and there are many other titles that will never show up
on Xbox (or the PC.)

Furthermore, most people who are FPS fans, will have a high powered PC, know
how to maintain it, and couldn't be bothered with buying an Xbox when their
PC trumps it in every way.

Most console RPGs are played for the story first, fight system second.
Personally, utterly open-ended RPGs bore me because there's no compelling
story or characters. In some cases, all you do is just wander around becoming
more powerful. This is OK for awhile (eg. Diablo) but I quickly begin to
desire something more.

As for the games you mention coming to the XBox, again, these will also show
up on the PC - and will be BETTER. Better graphics, better online support,
better mod-support.

Most folks who like PC-style RPGs...have a PC. Most folks who like console
style RPGs...have a console.

Sure, there's room for both types of games on both types of platforms, but
I think Microsoft is insane if they think XBox is suddenly going to overthrow
the PC as the platform of choice for PC-style games.

If you're already a PC gamer, there's very little reason to get an Xbox,
since most of the good games for Xbox are either available on other consoles
(eg. SSX Tricky) or are going to be on the PC (Halo, et. al.)

Usually when one buys a console, it's to get access to the exclusive library
offered for that console. This would mean buying a Game Cube for Mario,
for instance, or buying a Playstation for Final Fantasy. Even Dreamcast had
Sonic. But what does XBox have? It's library of truly exclusive games is
very small, which is the main reason it hasn't been doing very well in the
market.

If Microsoft shoves enough money at Valve, they may not mind making ever
making Half Life 2 for the PC. This would be a LOT of money though.
Especially since I preceive the PC market to be larger than the XBox one.

We all know that Microsoft has very deep pockets, and keeping Half Life 2
OFF the PC might actually cause a number of PC gamers to buy an XBox.

Then all Microsoft would have to do is pay ID and Blizzard not to release
their games on the PC anymore, but only do XBox...

And don't forget going after Rockstar, Square(/Enix), Naughty Dog...

I have personally used my $4000 big screen in the living room with my pc
with the Gforce 4 (which claims to have full screen hdtv support) it
doesn't look near as good as my Xbox does with high definition games.

I've compared both. The Xbox doesn't have the color depth, but it does
have more than adequate picture quality, and I don't have any 1080 games.

2 years?? I think you are stretching that out quite a bit. Max
resolution?? Are you telling me that the gforce 3 can play any game at
max resolution and not have such hard core slow down that it's not
playable? Add online gaming to that and you can see the stats start to
die very quickly. What about the memory upgrades and other maintenance
you need to do on the system all the time? I would take the maintenance
free Xbox over screwing with drivers / upgrades to the system any day of
the week. My only point here was that the "screw with it until it works"
factor is less on an Xbox. When I come home from work (I am in the IT
department for a cable company and maintain server and office pc's in
multiple states) I don't want to bother with all that anymore. I just
want to put the game in and have it play. ;)

Again, it's a matter of personal preference. You can have all the

people rarely use more than that anyway.

Again, I don't care what the "gaming community" feels. The discussion was

I don't like either of those game types very much. I still bought an Xbox
because of the quality of image (no other console has true hdtv support),
the diversity of the games they currently have, and the hassle free'ness
of a console system (x box didn't require me to shuffle memory cards
around - I hated them with the dremcast with a passion -).

That again is a matter of personal opinion. If you think that most people
who have a high powered pc know how to maintain it, I would like you to
sit in my office for just a day. (grins) I do have a high powered PC at
home. I don't want to mess with drivers and such to get a stupid game
working. A game is supposed to be relaxing from me after bashing on boxes
all day, and I don't want to come home to driver updates that have the
potential of causing more problems than it fixed. I want to put the cd in
the tray and play the game. ;) Hence the Xbox is now in my house. ;)

If it does, it does. If it doesn't, it doesn't, but considering the

Due to bad management in my opinion. Don't judge a console by the bad
management practices of the company who owned it. I think Microsoft has a
bit better marketing than the dreamcast had at its height.

More updates to fix bugs... more drivers that could cause more

playing. ;)

It has only been out for a year. Unless you are severely an impatient
person, you can't really expect a library of all the ps2 / pc / ps1 to
come out with release of the initial system.

Hasn't been doing well???!! The Xbox live kit sold in leaps and bounds
beyond expectations. It is slowly getting into more and more homes. You
can say the same for any underdog console system that was ever invented.
Atari / Nintendo / Sony / Microsoft.

This seems to be allot of money when they could be developing their own
games on their own system.

For a FPS?

You've got your standard WASD cluster for moving forward/backward and
strafing left/right, left mouse button, right mouse button, middle button
up/down, tab, spacebar, usually ctrl or alt, not to mention the weapon keys
(1-0) a few F-keys, and the escape key. That doesn't include keys for
item inventory, or other things, like the Force Powers in Jedi Knight.

I've played around with FPS games on a few consoles, and while it was
still playable, I still felt like I'd lost a great deal of flexibility from
the mouse/keyboard combo I used on PCs.

> Not every Xbox gamer agrees with the "console gaming community." The

Then the argument is even stronger. Most PC gamers are going to be playing
FPS. Why would they buy a XBox to play the exact same games they can play
on their PC, with fewer features?

Same goes for PC-style RPGs.

> I don't like either of those game types very much. I still bought an Xbox

The XBox does have an edge over the other consoles with regards to graphics.
There's no argument there. However for most folks, graphics aren't the most
important aspect of the game. Unfortunatly, Microsoft hasn't quite grasped
this yet, as they still seem interested in plugging the XBox as a beefy
piece of hardware, instead of as inconsequential thing that lets you play
games.

HDTV support is nifty...but honestly, how many people have HDTV? Even
most who can afford it are still waiting for the standards to settle down
before plunking down money on a set that may - or may not - be compatible
with the eventual HDTV standard.

The HD in the XBox for save games is a nice feature as well, although I've
never really minded using memory cards. I've got over a dozen games' worth
of saves on my PS2 card, for instance. The Dreamcast cards, on the other
hand, were too small. You almost need to have one card per game.

I'm not talking about office-folk. I'm talking about the home PC
enthusiasts who build their computers from a pile of parts. Even the IT
folks I knew at my last company would regularly build high end PCs so they
could play games at home.

Well, Dreamcast certainly didn't live up to its potential in the US...there
were a ton of games that folks were practically BEGGING Sega to bring over.
Then there was the lack of advertising...

While XBox has been getting better advertising than Dreamcast, it's still
a matter of who's got the games.

I bought a Playstation 2 fairly early on, and just recentally picked up a
Game Cube. If there comes a time that there are enough titles on the Xbox,
I'll consider getting one of them as well.

I've yet to come across a game that insisted on new video drivers in the
past 3 years. In some cases, I was still running with the drivers that
came on the CD with the hardware.

Patches, yes, those can be annoying. I usually don't bother buying a PC
game until it's been around for awhile. You get better reviews that way,
and you can also get a more stable product.

Within its first year, there were about 5 or 6 PS2 titles that I was
interested in. These were all titles that were only available on the PS2,
although since then, a few have shown up on other platforms (eg. SSX, Tony
Hawk.)

The sheer number of XBoxes sold vs. Playstation2s tell a different story.

XBox may still be considered a success in some ways, but until it starts
getting the same numbers the PS2 has, it'll always be in second or third
place.

But it's how the market in console gaming works. The hardware makers often
try to get software makers to make a certain "exclusive" to just their
platform, since that will help drive sales.

Most games aren't actually created by Sony, Nintendo, or Sega themselves.
