I don't know why you think this is a good development. I was rooting
for the Red Sox during the entire series. Why? Because the Angels have
the Yankees' number especially in the postseason.
Since the beginning of the Joe Torre era of Yankees baseball that
started in the 1996 season, the Angels are the *only* team in the
Major Leagues that has a winning record against the Yankees. Sure, we
split this season's series evenly at 5-5 but the Angels still have an
overall lead: 79-66.
Let's not forget that the two times the Angels and the Yankees met in
the post season, the Angels sent the Yankees packing (and even won the
World Series one of those times).
It would have been *much* better to play against the Red Sox than the
Angels especially considering how well the Yankees played against the
Red Sox in the second half of the regular season.
Of course, I hope history is rewritten and the Yankees come out on
top. Anything can happen, of course, and so far this post season seems
to be a story of surprises and opposites, but that doesn't change the
fact that baseball is all about playing the odds and the Angels are
the odds-on favorites anytime they play against the Yankees.
That being said... go Yankees!

The big diff between the Yanks and Angels is the pitching and the pen. The
Angels are worse than the Yanks in pitching, especially in the pen, esp.

Yeah but the Angels put forth even LESS effort against the Sox than
the Yanks against Twinkies so the who confidence factor lends itself
to the Halo's now. They, and everyone else wanted Boston to expend
SOME energy.

Let me repeat - the Angels are the *only* team that has a winning
record against this "era" of the Yankees and they have quite a
dominant advantage (9 winning seasons, 3 losing seasons and 1 tie
season). This doesn't count the two times the Angels knocked the
Yankees out of the postseason.
Also, take into account the fact that the Red Sox's 3 key starters -
Beckett, Lester and Matsuzaka - came into the series not as dominant
as they had been during the rest of the season. And who would have
thought that Papelbon would give up 3 earned runs?

Nope. I also didn't miss how the Yankees *just* eked out victories
whereas the Angels dominated in theirs, or how C.C. Sabathia wasn't
even involved (Chad Gaudin got one of the victories but no thanks to
his own pitching with an ERA above 4) and Pettitte was the losing
pitcher.

Did you not notice that the Angels' 3 key starters - Lackey, Weaver
and Kazmir - have overall better ERAs than the Yankees' (with the
exception of Kazmir whose shakey performance with the Rays this year
brings the group ERA down a bit)? Sure, they don't have K-Rod anymore
so they can't match the Yankees' Hughes and Rivera, but that doesn't
matter if their starting pitchers shut down the Yanks' bats and manage
to go deep into the game, which is exactly what Lackey and Weaver were
able to do (7.1 innings each).
Also, recall that when the Yankees got eliminated by the Angels in the
first round of the 2002 ALDS, they did it with a weaker pitching staff
(Jarrod Washburn, Ramon Ortiz and Kevin Appier vs. Roger Clemens,
David Wells and Mike Mussina).
Of course, I realize that this time, they've managed to have a decent
record against the Angels in the regular season, capped off the season
series with them by taking 2 out of 3, have had great performances by
A-Rod and Teixiera, and hopefully have an advantage in facing them in
a Best of 7 series instead of a Best of 5 series.
However, all of these things would have applied if the Yankees faced
the Red Sox as well, and they've had a much easier time against the
Red Sox in both the regular and post seasons (save for the
embarrassing ALCS a few years back) so once again it would have been
to the Yankees' advantage if the Red Sox managed to come from behind
in 5 games.
