You won't.
No, PS2 games will not work on the Slim.
Tunnel.
they could do that without allowing you to play your own.
after all, you can currently download games from PSN that work on both ps3
and psp - doesn't mean you can play psp games on your ps3.

I wouldn't say never but the chances are slim, no pun intended.
Technically, Sony could release a software emulator but the
performance would be worse than the previous software emulator which
utilized a chip that was removed after the 40GB model was released a
couple years ago.
As of right now, there are no plans to release such an emulator,
though.

But the Slim supports HDMI Control(with other Sony components) which is
kind of cool.
According to Sony, No. Not Ever. In fact their last formal statement
about PS2 compatibility was "If you want to play PS2 games, buy a PS2!"
At least, that's if you want to use PS2 game discs.
However, there's a rumor that the Sony Store plans on offering PS2 games (all
of them?!) as downloads sometime in the near future.
If true, Sony deserves a huge "F*** YOU" from PS3 owners as this obviously
means they have a purely software-based emulator, but rather than making
the emulator itself available, they'd rather everyone re-buy their PS2
titles.

That's what I understood. Basically Sony would be making you buy a new
version of the PS2 game even if you already own a physical copy.
Of course, they'll eat their words and reverse course in a microsecond
if they think there's more money to be made by doing so....

I finally took Rock Band 2 off my 360's hard drive so I could put MW2 on
it. Sweet relief from that awful noise.
The Slim is louder? I wonder whether I should consider getting it,
then...
They could be re-doing the games manually for the PS3. Kind of like how
Nippon Ichi redid Disgaea I and II.

I don't think so. Backwards compatibility is most attractive at the
beginning of a new console's lifecycle because it can act as a way to
entice owners of the previous console to buy into the new hardware early
on when the library of next-gen games is at its smallest and worst.
With the exception of RPG fans like me, there's almost no incentive left
for PS2 compatibility on the PS3 because the PS3's library is now large
and good enough to support the PS3 by itself.
Even if Sony does carry on with its plan to release PS2 games as digital
downloads, I really can't see them making much money at all from these.
After all, once you go HD, why would you go back to the PS2's graphics
for older games?
I don't think what I said is inconsistent with that...
[Roughly, you're saying there's no reason for them to do it, so they
won't, and probably you're right. What I was really saying was that
_if_ in the future, for whatever wacky and unexpected reason, they
decide there _is_ a good reason to re-add PS2 support, they'd do it,
regardless of any earlier public statements to the contrary -- i.e.,
always take statements like that with a grain of salt.]

It's extremely noisy - the 80G "old" PS3's I've tried were almost silent
compared to the Slims. There are some quiet Slims out there, some people
claim. I haven't seen any yet - and I've tried 6 of them. Sony, ofcourse,
claims it's all normal.
Speak for yourself. I for one love the unlimited emulated PS2/PS1 Memory
cards, the ability to play my 300+ PS2 and 400+ PS1 games on "ONE"
system!!!!!!
My slim is basically completely silent.

Would you like fries with that?
Do you install your games to the hard drive? My Xbox 360 is quiet as a
mouse when I play a game off the hard drive. I imagine that both
systems would be notably louder when the disc is spinning.
On an only marginally tangentially related note... my Insignia Blu-ray
player is loud as hell, which surprised me considering the 40GB
PlayStation 3 was noticeably quieter even when the disc was spinning.
While there will be exceptions, at this point in time Doug accurately
portrays the sentiment amongst the majority of the gaming market.
There really is no incentive for most people to even consider playing
PlayStation 2 games anymore. Hardcore gamers like us who still have
tons of previous generation games and would still play them even 3
years into this generation are a dwindling minority in today's market.
But they did and could still do that if they wanted. They accomplished
this with a general software emulator integrated into the console OS
and some added code to each game's code base that took care of
inconsistencies specific to the title.
Hmm... taken out of context in Jim's post today, I misunderstood your
statement.
Actually, it's not what Microsoft did with their old Xbox games. The
Xbox Originials were basically just ISOs of games that were already
made fully compatible by the entirely software-based emulator
integrated into the OS. It's essentially just as if you put the
original discs for those games into the system to play.
I don't explicitly do anything.
I think some games, at least, install themselves (RE5?) though.

Ok, so...RPG fans plus 1 ;)
Seriously though, do you think there's that many people out there who are
still interested in PS2 games this late in the generation? Up until even
a year ago, I would say "yes there is" but now?
Sure, if Sony were to release the emulator as a gift to those who missed
out on an earlier model that was PS2 compatible, that'd be great. Even if
Sony put the emulator up for sale, I'd be OK with that. However that
doesn't sound like what Sony has in mind. Instead it sounds as though
Sony wants everyone to re-buy their PS2 games in digital format. A move I
have to question because I can't see there being that many people out
there who are going to be interested in buying PS2 games at this point -
especially if they already have them on disc. I mean, how many people
bought PS1 games? I think FF7 was their best seller with what, 300,000
sales? Not bad for a nearly 15 year old video game I guess, but not so
good when compared against newer DL games, like Pain for instance.
Yes, I still have (and play) PS2 games...on my PS2, because that's what
Sony has pretty much forced me to do (my 80GB PS3 doesn't play PS2
games.) I definitely don't see myself paying another $10-15 to download a
PS2 game I already own onto my PS3 and I highly doubt many others in my
situation are going to do so either.
It's different.
First off, every 360 ever released has been capable of playing the exact
same set of original Xbox games from disc. All you had to do was install
the latest emulator (bundled with every 360 update) and you were good to
go. True, only a portion of the Xbox's library is supported but it's
better than nothing. So you aren't FORCED to buy that Xbox download if you
have the original game disc.
If you do happen to own a older PS3 that has some form of backwards
compatibility, then yes, the situations are the same. But for those who
don't own an early PS3 that had PS2 compatibility (which is the vast majority
of PS3 owners now) if this rumor of PS2 titles being sold through PSN is true,
it's basically like Sony telling all its loyal PS2 customer "F*** YOU!"
because even though they still have their stack of PS2 games, they can't use
them on their PS3 even though Sony has obviously gotten an emulator working
even for those PS3s that had no PS2 compatibility.
The fact I can't see Sony making any considerable money from offering PS2
games on PSN, I have to wonder about the accuracy of this rumor. By this
point, Sony has sunk years into this mythical piece of software and
realistically, has missed the window of opportunity to have any noticable
effects on PS3 sales. As I mentioned earlier, it would be a nice gesture
if Sony released the emulator but I really doubt Sony is the type of
company to do anything as a "nice gesture."

Batman: Arkham Asylum does this. But do we know how many do. Ninja
Gaiden Sigma 2 also installs.
