After being on backorder for what seems like ages my pre-modified GBA with
Afterburner (fantastic!) and flash linker finally turned up - delivery only
took 4 days once shipped by Lik Sang.
Unfortunately I got stung by import duties (UK), which was a bit of a pain
but still worked out a lot cheaper than buying from one of the UK stockists.
So to my question - is it common in the UK to get charged the import duties
or is it just luck of the draw? If I thought I'd get away with it in future
I'd be tempted to order more.
Finally, now I can finally "back-up" (Ha) some of the many GBA roms I have
acquired, I'm after a Top 8 suggestion list of GBA games to do just that!
(I'm far too lazy to try out every single one).
Thanks in (GB)Advance

Customs is just luck of the draw although UPS always seem to pay customs
and tax (and charge a tenner handling fee on top).
If you've got a flash linker and a well-lit GBA i can't see what you'd
need to import though.
Recommended games:
Final Fight
Doom
Ecks vs Sever
V-Rally 2
ISS
Winning Eleven (Jap only)
Super Mario Advance 2
Sonic Advance
Mario Kart Super Circuit
Arcade collections by Atari,Konami,Midway,Namco
Golden Sun and Advance Wars are very popular (not my taste)
Also go to www.gbxemu.com and you can get ZX Spectrum and NES emulators
so you can play Jet Set Willy and Manic Miner amongst others.
alt.binaries.emulators.gameboy.advance is great for getting games as soon
as they are released, to try them out before you buy them, obviously.
Enjoy!
Disclaimer:
Remember kids, software piracy is a crime.
Charging £30 for a rip off of a SNES title or Robot Wars Advanced
Destruction is merely a misdemeanor.

Its quite common on goods over £20 (I think). You can get this up to £30
if the packaging is marked 'Gift under £30' - it'll go through customs
without picking up any charges. If you can, you should always try and get
the person/retailer your buying from to mark the parcel up as 'Gift under
£30' - even if your goods total £200! This can sometimes be a problem as
to mark it up as thus, the invoice needs to be ammended meaning that if it
gets lost in the post then you'll only be able to claim upto £30.

I've imported quite a bit of stuff over time - mainly cds, dvds etc. but
everything up to a toy scooby doo mystery machine which came in a really big
box from USA.
In about 6 years of doing so, I've only been stung by customs twice - and
one of those times the Post Office forgot to collect the fee, as they
dropped it with a neighbour and said they would collect it from me the day
after (oops!).
It therefore seems pretty random, although my feeling is that, the faster
delivery systems (i.e. priority air mail) are more prone, because there is
physically less of this stuff and therefore easy for the customs to check
for VAT.
Of course, it is *far* more important to spend the time checking goods for a
missed VAT bill of about ten quid than making sure they don't contain hard
drugs, guns, or that the next lorry isn't full of illegal immigrants - or
all 3.

Can't say the dimmer switch bothers me one way or the other. Main thing was
to at least be able to see the damn screen and having tested it side by side
with a "normal" GBA in varying light I don't think I'd ever use it anyway.
And I thought Lik Sang were very good - granted there was a bit of a delay
in getting them sorted but at least they kept updating the news item on
their website and answered my emails by return - when it did ship only took
4 days.
Guess you had bad luck.

Use Lik-Sang if you have to, but I prefer www.dcslinks.com who stock some of
the same stuff as Lik-Sang (although not a lot of the more exotic copier
type stuff) but are usually cheaper. Use EMS Speedpost because they are
quick and they have tracking. They also use Parcelforce when the parcel
gets to the UK and they randomly check parcels for Import duty (or at least
thats what the postie said) so you have a better chance of your parcel
slipping through..
www.dcslinks.com will also mark the parcel as gift and put a low dollar
value on it if you ask them. I have done this on a huge box with about
$350 US dollars worth of goodies inside and customs let it through.
I hope this helps you avoid import duty.

They have terrible customer service and they burned everyone who ordered the
Afterburner Gameboy Advance. Plus, they don't care that many of those
customers will now be buying from their competitors.

you are the only person who complains about Liksang, yet you have a 100% correct
installed Afterburner. There are thousands of people around here who never had
any problems with Liksang and imho they are just great. Never had to pay import
duties, always received my stuff within 5 days and always a fairly cheap place
to buy.

I have only ever ordered 1 thing from them and they screwed it up. Now,
they are selling our dimmer switches with those nice modified GBA cases they
are offering. (I seriously doubt they just threw our dimmer switches away,
yeah I know it is only 60 cents, but it is the principle of the matter.)
So, as far as I am concerned they have a 99% screw up rate. (I'll award
them 1% for the fact that they managed not to botch my install.) So, you
can bet that I will never give them anymore money. I will also tell
everyone that would consider buying from them about the fact that I think
they aren't the best people to be ordering from. You guys are grownups and
can do what you want, but it I just wanted to warn you, so if they do
something that you aren't happy with, don't be surprised if they don't care
that you are displeased with your product or the way they handled your
order. I guess I am just upset because the AGBA was my trial before I
ordered the modified XBOX from them. I really wanted them to work out, but
I just can't trust them.
