I've imported quite a bit of stuff over time - mainly cds, dvds etc.  but
everything up to a toy scooby doo mystery machine which came in a really big
box from USA.

In about 6 years of doing so, I've only been stung by customs twice - and
one of those times the Post Office forgot to collect the fee, as they
dropped it with a neighbour and said they would collect it from me the day
after (oops!).

It therefore seems pretty random, although my feeling is that, the faster
delivery systems (i.e. priority air mail) are more prone, because there is
physically less of this stuff and therefore easy for the customs to check
for VAT.

Of course, it is *far* more important to spend the time checking goods for a
missed VAT bill of about ten quid than making sure they don't contain hard
drugs, guns, or that the next lorry isn't full of illegal immigrants - or
all 3.
