Hey Dufus, in Doom you couldn't "fall off a ledge and die", because you didn't take any damage from falling. Probably because the game didn't care about the z-values.

It does care about the Z value, otherwise you wouldn't fall. Falling requires a change in the Z value.

When you went over a ledge, you DID fall, so obviously it takes z-values into account. Adding something like falling damage is another thing altogether.

The people at ID stated many times in many articles that Doom is NOT true 3D. If anyone in this thread actually read any of the articles concerning the game when it first came out then maybe this silly thread would be done by now.

What is true 3D anyway? As far as I'm concerned having a functional Z axis ( not just parallax ) is grounds enough for 3D ( provided that X and Y are also functional ). Doom fulfills that requirement, even if the Z axis is "simulated".

Really, that was only mildly amusing the first 10 times you did it, now your incesant crying is just keeping you in character.

I'm sorry you feel so threatened by me that you're forced to cower behind over-the-top one-liners. The Z movement is one way in which Quake represents a 3D world better than Doom, but it's not the only way. If you put a weight on your "move left" key and stare at the screen you will get dizzy in either Quake or Doom, even quicker than you would from tilting right to left. However if you did this test with Quake and then Doom Quake would be more likely to make you dizzy since it's world is more believable. Doom would be less likely to fool your sense of balance with its less realistic world. Can't you think up one valid argument against this? You've certainly done your best to avoid the subject so far, favoring to argue the suplimentary evidence of motion which I so recently enlightened you of.
< This is one thing. The funny < thing is that no one was ever talking about motion until your dumb ass < tried to correlate this argument (the motion sickness) to the totally < unreleated argument as to weither Doom's world is 3D or not.
I'm afraid I've gone above your head again. It's unfortunate you misunderstood such a simple part of my argument. Only you, in your neverending confusion have argued whether motion sickness makes a game 3D or not. I was having a conversation with another person about which game represents a 3D world better. Less extreme FOV. People do get dizzy from IMAX shows and the like, even though they are as realistic as possible (or does IMAX have blurry textures?).

I think I missed the start of this thread, but I have a useful comment! Having seen the Dreamcast in action at ECTS (I'm with the press!) I can confirm that it performs much better than a Voodoo 2 (going by current software available - which admitedly doesn't use the card to its full potential)
Dreamcast's Sonic Adventure ran at 60 frames per second, had loads of special effects (reflections, explosions, etc) and was incredibly detailed, drawing a long way into the distance.

Whoop, Quake 2 runs at 90 FPS and Unreal has no clipping plane at all. All the effects you see in Dreamcast games are now or will be before Dreamcast ships in V2 games. The Dreamcast is an overhyped toy.

But we aren't discussing "true 3D." Quake isn't "true 3D" because it doesn't allow objects that can be found in a true 3D environment. It uses a subset of objects, just like Doom, therefor it is 3D though, but not true 3D.
But anyways, they are talking in "computer game" speak rather than 3D Geometry terms.

Extremely rarely, and generally only from extreme scenes with roller coasters, and the like. And dizziness is not nausea. Many, many movies have the POV moving rapidly through corridors, as in a FPS, yet illness is virtually unheard of.
>< So how do you account for the fact that some people, such as myself, find >< that low-quality FPS games, such as Dark Forces running on the PS, induce >< sickness, while Quake does not?

In other words, if the data doesn't agree with your preconceived notions, then the data must be wrong. In my experienced, the words, "It is an accepted fact that..." virtually always precede a false statement. I challenge you to cite *any* scientific study showing that Quake makes more people sick than other games, or that nausea is more frequent with high quality graphics than with lower quality graphics. You might keep in mind the fact that nausea was a frequently cited complaint with "Virtuality" -- a 3D virtual reality system running on low-powered Amiga computers with a low-resolution LCD display.
>< Seems like your hypothesis is not very consistent with the data.

Fine. Provide us with some real data other than your anecdotal claims, which are no more valid than anybody else's.

Oh, and you have done that, have you? I have checked the medical literature on the subject, and it does not appear to support your claims. I challenge you to cite *any* controlled study in which subjects were not involuntarily moved around by the simulator that supports your claims.
>We've already established that simulator sickness is caused by

No, we have established no such thing. And I have checked the medical literature on the subject, and it doesn't seem that anybody else has established it either--it is regarded as an unproved hypothesis, not an established fact. Again, I challenge you to cite *any* controlled study that tested and confirmed the "conflicting input" hypothesis for cases in which the subjects were not actually moved about by the simulator.
This situation kind of reminds me of when someone smells something utterly disgusting. They keep sniffing and bitching how bad it is. The funny thing is that they keep sniffing...and occassionally others join in.

Quake 2 at 90 FPS ??? Which timedemo ? What hardware ?
The Voodoo 2 is an overhyped, underperforming piece of shit that leaked out of your arse after your dad pulled out :)

A Voodoo 2 on a P2 450 gets 90 FPS on demo1 and 70 FPS on massive1. You didn't know this because you're talking out of your ass. For example:
< The Voodoo 2 is an overhyped,
When it came out the Voodoo 2 actually performed better than 3DFX claimed it would. You could atleast make your lies believable.

Considering it's the best consumer card out their, you've got some pretty fucked standards.
