Changing Ship Graphics

Is there a way to switch out the displayed graphic of a ship in the ship
overview screen?

ie. Take the Light Ship for example. It, as all other ships have 4 images
associated with it. For all ship it seems to be image # 2 that is used for
the ship overview screen. Image number 2 for the light ship is downright
drab and ugly. Is there a way to put image #1 or #3 in it's place? They look
oh so much nicer, especially #1. I'd do the same for some other ships as
well. It's also about time I replace the planets Leia with a much better
looking picture.

The graphics are embedded into the race pack files which are only
accessible (read only) through the v4face2.dll. You may be able to
submit a revised graphic to Tim and have him replace it.

Would it be possible for Tim to release a DLL or something to able us
to change the graphic ?

In the Vgap 3 days, they had a lot of alternative picture, even
replacement music for vcr.
(they were .bmp)

The problem is that that file has the information about the images and
the ship list.

I think that Tim is not going to release the control of that files
because of this whould allow developers to make new ship design. As
soon as it released those files, the community could make other
versions of the races and I believe that Tim would not like it.

Of course, he could do it another way.

He could add an "Alt" folder within each game folder. The client could
check this folder on boot up, and if, for example, it found a file
titled "hull60_2.jpg" (or are they .bmp?), then the 2nd picture of hull
#60 (Crystal Light) would be replaced with that graphic.

You would have to distribute the new graphics to all players for them
to see the new graphic, however.

Did you know that if you place a file named l101.bmp in the BMP folder
that image will become the Fed leader image. . .
s101.bmp is the new alt race symbol.

Tha very good to know, I'm almost sure nobody knew about this.

Many players including myslef Use RaceView.exe to look at other races.
It would be nice if raceview look for those ALT bmp as well.

Tim could you list all the possible ALT ?

I'm pretty sure this will find it's way to the Wiki so you won't have
to repeat yourself.

Well I'm using my "polished" version of the race leaders / symbols for
quite a while now.
Still as Amaranthine suggested it would be a very cool feature, if you
could have alternative pictures for races (and ships) for each game.
This would be especially interesting for games with a roleplay touch
(as it is now, all games would have the same picture or you need
several copies of planets on your pc).

Concerning the programming:

Ships: Tim could us the mechanism for alternate pictures that is
already in effect for the race-pics (every ship-hull already has a
unique number, so this could be very similar and thus (hopefully)
relatively easy)

Alt Folder: Using the information of the current gamefolder
(sCurrentGameFolder) that should be present, as other information is
being read from it, too, the current mechanism could be modified by
just changing the directory to look for pictures to something like sDir
= ".\WAR\" & " sCurrentGameFolder "\BMP".

@Tim: If this is in fact easy to implement, I would like this feature a
lot as I believe that easy customization can add a lot of value to
software.

I'm looking for old winplan replacement picture pack.

I had several and lost them.
All the vgap 3 links are dead, and Donavan site only has a pack with
the vgap4 picture for vgap3.

I recall " Timo" pack was a good one and they were several other good
one.

If you have a pack let me know, I want to start building a replacement
pack for Planets4.

I've had a play around with resizing the images etc, and the message
screen is where the limitation will occur as it will push buttons out
of the window. you can go a little bigger than the standard images
(200x250) for the race leader without problems, but this is a sensible
limit to use.

For the Race Symbol, this can be increased from it's standard size of
150x150, up to 225x160 without any problems.... but at a width of 225
it is right up against the side of the window. If you go any longer
the image will still display, but there is text that will be floating
over the image.

If changes are made to race view to allow these images to override the
settings in there, then those max sizes will probably have to change
back to the default.
