This is a little note for all of the people steling things using third party
software. Forget the fact that it is grounds for banning......it is
illegal.

Using software on or through the internet to perform theft of property which
has value or to dammage property of value is a federal offense. Thanks to
ebay.com, property on UO now has a real world value. I am currently
litigating a case in which property was stolen on UO. On that little
note........have fun.

it IS a game and the things in it are NOT real items. They have value in
the real world only to those who wish them to. Its not like someone has
hacked into your bank and stolen your months wages is it.. I mean, grow up!

While I admit that there is a problem with stealing and that a lawsuit
is way out of proportion I find your attitude very imature and
ignorant. People put a lot of effort into the game, making RL friends
online, Learning a trade, amassing a fortune in gold and belongings.
To have someone come along and rip it away can be hard on them. Having
some petty thief come along and ruin the experience can be shattering
to a lot fo people. Why dont you grow up and think of others before
making statements like that.

I have also started a case against a guy who shot me with a gun when playing
Counter Strike.

Actually, he has a point. Value can be easily proven using past ebay
auctions, etc. In the court system, especially in today's computer driven
world, non physical property can be proven to have value. The problem comes
with proof of possession and proof of theft, since our UO "property" can be
parted with in so many ways. Logs of course could be used to show these
things I suppose, but that gets sticky sometimes too, and I'm not sure how
detailed those logs would be.

Dismissing the idea of if being a true theft though if a bit premature.

So you're saying that if I walk through Britain, and use my stealing skill
to take your backpack full of house deeds, that I can be sued?

It's using software to steal things via the internet, isn't it?

Does this mean that evertime we lose items in game due to a server down
while in a dungeon and u wake up dead and all yer good gear gone, which OSI
won't replace, that it is theft, because I feel that it is. I dont feel
that is much different from being hacked and stolen from in the game. If
this is the case, I'm quids in :)

No, because OSI has said (check update.uo.com for past notices) that ANY
blessed or newbie item stored in a subcontainer CAN be stolen. This
isn't a bug, it's a feature. :)

Otherwise everyone would just keep a newbie book in their reagent bag to
stop thieves, instead of taking the time to sort the regs into different
piles...

If someone hacks your UO account, transfers all your stuff to their own
characters, and then sells them for monetary gain on ebay or wherever, then
I think a RL crime will have taken place. There was a post from a chap round
about december who had this happen to him, and he was able to trace the
culprit (despite them using hotmail or similar), he then sicced the local
police onto the person, and succesfully sued them.

I wish I could find the post, but with Remarq gone I've no archive material
anymore.

i know what its like to be stolen from in game, believe me.
but trying to sue someone in rl for it is rediculous, i mean, who are you
going to sue?
