I always wall up all the sides and then open a wall after I've dropped the
elevator in. Leaving one side open hasn't been reliable for me, even with
the same spot and elevator.

Yeah, leaving one end open is definitely workable - in fact even an
one-end-open 2x1 box is also workable - BUT only limited to elevator facing
*inwards*. In other words, if you want you sims to enter the elevator from
outside the house, you'll find that walls can't be built on the second level
with this one end open method. Another thing is you can start building an
elevator before you even start you first wall of the house with the enclosed
box, but with one end open, you can't.
For the basic tutorial to be generally applicable, i recommend the enclosed
3x1 tile "fundemental". :)

I found out during gameplay today that the 2 garden lamps are "yellow" in
small zoom. The T-mog mistake has been corrected and please re-download the
2 lamps http://www.simorphor.com/things.html if you downloaded them
yesterday on 17 Feb, or before you see this note. Sorry for the
