Sunnyvale vs Los Angeles
------------------------
People have been talking smack on the net for years about this.
Most agree that California is _the_ hot spot for SF2 in
North America, but not on exactly where it's the hottest. B3
is the most recent meeting of the best from LA with the best
from Sunnyvale. Hopefully, looking at how they did will shed
some light on the issue.

1st Place - Alex Valle (Los Angeles)
2nd Place - John Choi (Sunnyvale)

At first glance, you think, "Well, that settle's it, LA's the
best." It's not that simple, though. John and Alex played
15 matches to determine first place; the most they could have
possibly played. Alex won 8, John won 7. Most matches went
to three rounds. Most rounds went down to the final seconds
or final inch of a life bar. Buy the B3 tape (we're working
on it now), and you'll see just how close it was. Saying
Alex is better than John based on this alone is like flipping
a coin 15 times and saying heads is better than tails (the matches
were that close).

The next two places were:

3rd Place - Jason Nelson (Sunnyvale)
4th Place - Jeff Schaffer (Los Angeles)

The separation here, in my opinion, is much clearer. Nelson
gets a lot more respect from me than Jeff. In order to get
4th, Jeff only had to make his way though two Sunnyvale regulars
(Tony Ngo and Julien Beasley). Since Nelson lost early to
Julien, he had to defeat 4 LA players in the loser's bracket
(Martin Vega, Thao Duong, Richard Koven, and Jeff). The story
doesn't end there, though. Lets see who got 5th and 7th

5th Place - Tony Ngo (Sunnyvale)
5th Place - Richard Koven (Los Angeles)
7th Place - Thao Duong (Los Angeles)
7th Place - Julien Beasley (Sunnyvale)

2 Sunnyvale players and 2 LA players. Since Tony never fought
Richard and Thao never fought Julien, it's impossible to separate
5th from 6th and 7th from 8th. Another tie. Who's left?

9th Place - David Cheng (Vancover, Canada)
9th Place - Jason Cole (Sunnyvale)
9th Place - Adam McMahon (San Diego)
9th Place - Graham Wolfe (Sunnyvale)
13th Place - Mike Pirring (Sunnyvale)
13th Place - Mike Watson (Los Angeles)
13th Place - Tom Cannon (Sunnyvale)
13th Place - David Sirlin (Sunnyvale)

As you can see, Sunnyvale is filling in 5 of the next 8 places
(totaling 9 out of the top 16). However, Mike Watson got
an _very_ bad draw in the finals, losing to Richard Koven (5th)
and Graham Wolfe (9th) in 2 out of his first 3 matches. Also,
it's not suprising that Sunnyvale is dominating the rest of
the pack, as there aren't any more LA players left! =)

It's too damn even! Heck, if you look across the entire
bracket of the top 32 competitors and count the number of
Sunnyvale vs LA matches, guess what you get?

Sunnyvale's Finest: 7 wins, 7 losses
Los Angeles's Finest: 7 wins, 7 losses

Based on what I've seen, I can only say that both cities are
very evenly matched. And, if you look at the results, both
dominate all other cities in the tournament. Which one is
better? Too close to call.

Haven't you taken statistics, senor? Heads *is* better than tails.
Least with quarters.

(yeah yeah, I'm just wicked jealous cause I couldn't get to CA... bite me!)

B3 stands for Battle By the Bay. Although almost everyone definitely
wants to do it again, there's no formal date for the next
gathering. It will most likely resolve around Capcom's next
release, though (whether that be SF3 or SFA3).

Thanks. Hear of any tournaments in San Francisco? There's some great
players here. I've talked to the Pier 39 & Q-Zar owners, but they're not
interested in holding 'em! Oh well.
