Man, do I hate reading this stuff. Believe or not, there are plenty of
good (great, godlike, whatever) SF players who have not entered
tournaments for a variety of reasons. First of all, in many smallish
towns, there are none. For instance, I live in Ithaca NY. No tournaments
around here. If there was one in NYC, how would I find out about it?
Of course, cities do hold the majority of the US population, but there
a plenty of great players out there who don't live in one of the major
metropolises.
When you discuss who is the "best" in the US, what you are really
talking about is who is good AND well known. Remember, this newsgroup is a
very exclusive club that most SF players don't even know about.

John Choi.. John claims and people say he is the best on alpha. He is
probably second or third at best. People say he killed Mike Watson. No
way. In tournaments they have faced each other in a total of 15 games in
a total of 3 series. The score is Mike 10 games John 5 games. With Mike
winning 2 out of 3 series. And the series he lost 3/2 John openly said
(and I and 5 other people were right there) Your joystick was broken, it
was not fair. So as you can see, Mike has won way more. At the huge
tournament in L.A. John said he didn't think Mike was any good and that
he was going to beat him but in the final John beat mikes sodom in the
first game then Mike came in with Ken and literally destroyed john 4 games
to zero, I think John won 1 round total. I beat John 3-0 with rose only
losing 1 round in 3 games with rose. Thats rose vs ryu 3-0. John is hell
of good but he needs to admit who the other good players are.
Mike Watson - Mike Watson is the only guy in the U.S. who has ever
even had a chance against Tomo. This guy is the most skilled player
around that I have ever seen, no shit. He killed everybody in every
tourney I ever saw on Alpha, hes the only guy who can easily alpha counter
duck shorts every time. He has proved himself, he won the big tourney,
1st place. He even offered John Choi side bets of any amount of money up
to 200 dollars and John declined every time. So Mike talks shit yes, but
he will back it up sad to say.
Thomas Osaki - since Tomo didn't play super turbo, this guy was the
best. Yes better than Mike and he proved it. In the final at a tourney
in sunnyvale he beat mike 3 games to 2 in the last round by 1 sliver, so
these two guys are just equal, anybody could have won. Thomas did lose to
me 2-0 and Matt Howard (a nobody chun li 2-0) on super at the huge
tourney. He also lost in the final to Tomo on SF2, Champion and turbo
hyper so Tomo is definitly better because no one from the sunnyvale area
has ever touched him. I must hand it to Thomas, he has the best M. Bison
and Guile I have ever seen in the world, he almost beat my sagat. The
only reason he lost to tomo is that Ryu is just that good when tomo uses
him.
Jeff Schaefer - I havent done shit on alpha only a couple of third places
because I loost to Mike every time. I am really good but I am not Mike or
Thomas or Tomo, these guys are better than me. John Choi.... He is better
on alpha than me. People from the east coast make me laugh. I just play
for fun not to decimate peoples egos.
East coast Players -- I have played the best two, first hand. Sam Kim
and Joel. These guys are good but they both lost really, really bad to
players that are not even or evern have been top 5 in California. Sam
said his vega would beat any sagat and yet he lost to a 12th ranked
California Sagat player really bad. Joel said his guile was the best in
the U.S., not even close, not even. Thomas makes him look like a
beginner, he lost to Honda very ugly and to Bob painter who is the best in
san diego but only about 5th in L.A. It was like 3-2 first series and 3-1
second series and guile kills honda so he isn't as good as he thought.
All of these east coast hot shots refused to play Alpha which showed that
they are not "real" players, real players play all versions.
Heres my ranking of the best Alpha players.
Mike Watson...by far, I really mean it, no shit.
John Choi's friend who plays ken and ryu (Mr. Combo)
John Choi
Jeff Schaefer - only because I lost 3-1 to johns friend and Mike every
time - but I beat john 3-0.
Bobby - an LA player who is killer with Akuma.
Everyone else is good but not like these guys.
Character rankings.
Ken - without a doubt.
Ryu
Guy
Charlie
Rose
Sodom
Akuma
who cares--
Its all true guys, non biased. Oh one more thing for the Wolfe brothers
becasue they think they are so good. Skill wins, not just what you know.
They have turbo hyper at there house and they said they knew it all and
would kill me but I think I beat Gramms guile 6 in a row then his ryu 5
more times basically undefeated, then Alex's dhalsim who he said would
kill me and all his other guys. And I killed them with Blanka, a
character they didn't rank top 5. They are hell of good though.
Thanks all. Peace not accusations, just get along and enjoy the rivalry.
Terminator.

Definitely. Myself and 2 others here in Vancouver are/were among
the best players anywhere in N.America, yet nobody knew who
the hell we were, we live in the PAcific Northwest for Chrissake.
If we lived and played in Southern Cal, we'd be as notorious as
Watson or Tomo or Schaefer easily. And tournaments mean nothing,
cause I've never played in an SF2 tourney and I know I could
take any player in LA 51% at LEAST.

No kidding. David's akuma is a killer. I know this guy. Laster is
almost like a home to him.
P/S Laster is an arcade centre in Vancouver.

You are out of your mind, Jeff. Either you have brain damage or all your
I agree with you. Here in Seattle a lot of the best players don't bother with the
tourneys. A lot of guys play the arcades in Bellevue or places like the one in
Southcenter mall. The guys I play there are about twice as good as most of the
tourney players I've seen. I don't consider myself a good arcade player (I play the
home system versions mostly), but I've beat some high ranked local tourney players
around the University of Washington area. If you break it down between home system
and arcade players, there are a lot of good home players that stop in at Game N
Play in Bellevue. I used to know some guys who started as hotline consultants at
Nintendo who kicked almost everyone's ass on SF2 and SF2T. I think one of the guy's
names was Quong. He played a mean-ass Dhalsim three years ago.
I think it is kind of difficult to say any player is the best. I'm not
belittling anyone's skill, but tourneys aren't the only place where the good
players are.
<DL>
: Although I'm like Mr. Choi in that I don't gamble, I'd put money down on
: Tomo getting his ass handed to him in Japan.
What's going on here? I definitely agree with you on this one!
