It's also to make him look good/bad depending on your actions. Because if you get in trouble getting the shotgun he comes to the rescue often throughout the game just as he says, but if you don't he never does come to the rescue when you get in other trouble and so he fails at doing what he said.
Barry was making reference to the fact that Wesker had said, "Let me handle this!" meaning he'd stay in the hall and wait for them. When Jill and Barry returned, obviously, Wesker was gone. So when they split and he said that, he meant, unlike Wesker, he'd be in the hall. Which doesn't quite make sense but holds semi-true when you meet him and he gives you the acid rounds.
Great game, some of the worst dialogue ever. I love it!

Yea, that sort of makes sense. It at least makes more sense than when he's giving the acid rounds to Jill and she says, "Okay, I'll take THIS then." like there was more than one choice or something. It's easy to tell in that game that the voice actors recorded their lines individually without hearing the line they were supposed to be responding to.
