I like this game a lot and I've just started playing again, but I'm
having a lot of trouble with seemingly unavoidable instadeaths. Some
examples include a disintegration trap in the hedge maze and horrible
early wilderness encounters, surrounded by very powerful monsters.
So far I've figured out how to join a guild and/or get a god, become
slightly lawful or chaotic, and I've found the sewers and the
archdruid. Are there some things I can be doing in the early game to
avoid dying quite so much? It's very frustrating when each new game
you have to locate all the relevant shops etc in Rampart again!

Well, you only have to find the Rampart landmarks once (and then save),
and then you can move to them automatically from that point on.
As for instadeath, yes, this is clearly one of Omega's flaws. A
character has to be really quite strong in order to survive long in the
countryside, or in any of the more advanced dungeons. It's not very
practical, or should I say fun, to try to beat Omega without saves.
It sounds like you haven't found the Oracle, who's in the Rampart hedge
maze (though fully exploring the hedge maze itself is rather dangerous).
She'll help you tackle the tasks in a safer order. The sewers are
actually a moderately tough dungeon; did you go to the goblin dungeon?
The oracle will tell you where it is (it's in the countryside, very
close to Rampart).
