Last night I was checking on the US Navy fleet that is anchored in Pearl
Harbor, Hawaii. After landing my Helo on the back of one of the smaller
ships I noticed the clouds reflecting in the beautiful tropical blue and
purple waters of the harbor.

I am using REX Essential for cloud and water textures and DX10 is enabled.
Cool!

Pardon me, but that was not a landing, that was a survivable crash ;o)

Hate to be a snob but that's the same thing I've been seeing for years with
FSX and AS. Even better in P3D. Just turn your settings up. You were getting
about 16fps with an unlimited setting - not bad but a steady 30fps would be
better.

Dallas - learn to use the settings in AS2012 and you will be surprised. SP2
should be out any day now and there are some goodies in that too PLUS some
really big things coming down the road with AS!!

Vic, I am happy that you are enjoying AS2012. Without a doubt, your
knowledge of the inner-workings of these amazing programs, is leaps and
bounds beyond my understanding of such. But, exactly why is 30 frames
better than 16? if 16 looks smooth and fluid to me, how would 30 look?
Likely it would look smooth and fluid. And why bash REXe when many others
believe the program to be worth while. Is Piper better than Cessna, is
X-plane is better than FS10? Some will believe so, no doubt. But, it is
all subjective. Doubtfully could it be proven, to my satisfaction, that one
weather proggy is so much better than another, that it would enhance my
enjoyment or the smoothness and fluidity of the sim.

16 FPS is good for me in this situation. I get much better than that, as
you can see in other videos I post, depending on dense scenery areas as well
as which plane or helicopter I happen to be in. Some choppers can get quite
heavy on the frames, having nothing to do with the weather program. But I
would see absolutely no difference in either the Sim's performance or, more
importantly, Danny's enjoyment whether 10 or 60FPS.

I long ago stopped equating frame numbers with my enjoyment. Unless you are
into the "bragging rights" of mine is bigger than yours...FPS means squat to
me. It is, no doubt, very important to some, just not so much so to me.
So, if I am wrong, I am wrong. I still am thoroughly enjoying the effects
installed by REX Enhanced.

Apologies Danny - I am in a grumpy phase today - you are quite correct about
fps. I have always been one to ignore FPS - if it is smooth - it makes no
difference.

I don't really mean to bash RexE - although there is a back story there that
is not for open publication HOWEVER I was reacting to the impression that
what you were seeing was something NEW. it may be for you and I lost sight
of that.

Probably grumpy because I've been dealing with a bunch of OPUS fans who
think it's the best weather engine since sliced bread becuz it shows pretty
clouds. Fact is that it's is using technology that we used 7 years ago. we
can produce the same results, all they have to do is disable all the
features that THEY asked for to provide accurate temps and winds.

As far as weather goes - it depends on what you want as to which is "better"

low and slow with pretty clouds - all of them are about the same.

if you want to flight plan with ACCURATE winds aloft and temps for fuel
burn, etc - AS2012 and then RexE a distant second - Opus not capable at this
time.

Enjoyment is the domain of the individual user, if you like it and it works
for you, that's all that matters.

You hit it on the head, my friend. I had not seen, or maybe taken the time
to notice, those swirling waters until I panned down last night. I am
guessing I could see some of that with default textures and DX10, but with
less tropical water colorations, etc, making it less pretty.

I have not heard of Opus for FSX. Googled it and found this information.

http://www.opussoftware.co.uk/opusfsi.htm

But, I will not be trying it, as my weather machine ain't broke.

LOL! As long as FSX has been around and as much as I have worked with it, I
am still amazed that every now and then I see something that I never saw
before. I think the potential has always been there but it takes the newer
hardware and add on software to bring it out. Several years ago I bought an
add on - Tongass Fjords from Aerosoft - Lots of good amphibian airports - I
have always had my water settings on high in FSX so the moving water and
reflections was amazing.

I'm just waiting for Prepar3D 2.0 when it uses DX11 - now THAT ought to be
something to see!!

Anyone buying a card or new pooter now, should really consider getting one
capable of DX11 and moving to P3D. We await your reports and the numerous
videos that are certain to pop up on Youtoobie.

Danny,
Do you have a link for that REX Essential. I think I'm supposed to get
a free upgrade for my Red 2.

Sam, the best I can tell, you have to 'register' yourself in their forum
WITH the order number from where ever you bought the REX software.

http://www.realenvironmentxtreme.com/forums/index.php?/topic/15044-rex-essential-verification-thread/

I don't know if they send you a link for the d/l or just how the upgrade
works.

Thanks Danny. I went to that link and logged in. There was a button to
click on for the free upgrade downkloads but I got a message that said they
wee overloaded at this time. To try again later. I guess everybody is trying
to get theirs at once. I'll try again tomorrow.

Hey Sam, did you post your order number? You have to post your order number
for verification before you can access the download.

I saw that message on my screen as well, Sam.

Their method of registering in the forum to confirm the purchase, must
create a very laborious process for someone on their end of the forum. I
can not imagine why thy would make it so difficult or inefficient. Seems to
be a 100 people a day are posting order numbers.

I'm still getting that severe server overload message today. If that is
anything like the one I have now it is a huge download, It was too large to
put on one regular DVD. I had to burn it to a DL DVD.

You should go to the overhead console and turn on the inverters to get
your attitude indicator and gyro instruments working.. :)

....GYRO...That's a Greek Sandwich isn't it? I normally do, boB. Just
tooling around that night. Switching birds often.

OH! BTW. Check out the 'blade slap' effect available free at hovercontrol.

You don't mention what you have for scenery - mine's nothing compared
to yours... I'm interested in knowing what you installed to make it so
realistic...

I have the REX Essentials program installed. It has new textures to replace
the default FSX textures for inland water, ocean water, clouds, sky, sun,
runway, taxiway, etc.

What caused the swirling effects seen in the water could be a combination of
the DX10 I run almost 100% of the time and the water setting slider in FSX
to High, slider maxed to the right. Seems the time was dusk

I had never seen the swirling as far as I recalled so I started Fraps to
capture the effect and did an instant replay of a couple of minutes then
edited the clip to shorten it post on YouTube for others to see.

Oh! If you do not have the REX or Active Sky programs, you can get a great
water change effect with a free program called FSWaterConfigurator:

http://www.strikingsoftware.com/fswc.shtml

There have plenty of preset colors or you can adjust the sliders to suit.
That blue water you show in the photo not so bad in Hawaii, but sometimes I
see videos and photos where the water is too light blue, like that, on an
inland stream or lake.
FSWaterConfig will greatly improve on the water colors.

open area. (the altitude below you is not your friend in a helicopter
emergency).
