This is why they tell you not to fix your gaze while flying:

That's one of the best examples I've seen of that one.

Another thing is that if you're looking right or left for traffic,
pause head and eye movement for two or three seconds in
the direction of interest. For some reason, you can quite often
miss moving objects, no matter how close, on a converging
course if your head or gaze is moving. This also applies at
intersections while driving.

I experience a similar effect during my annual eye field test. If I
don't gaze away from the center red dot every 10 or 15 seconds, I
don't see the little blinking dots that appear here and there.
Interesting... it all goes to show we can't really trust what we see!

Huh.. 'escuse me? The whole point of the test is to stare at the red
dot or the test results will be wrong.

I'm quite sure about that as I just took that test less than 24 hours
ago.

You may have, Gregory. We were all busy staring at green dots and
missed it! [:0)

Lol.. it was posted on March 13, 2012

The pilot buddy who emailed it to me [was the same guy that] took the
picture of Sully (supposedly) at Hayward.

As Dallas would say.. "try and keep up." :)))

If Dallas is tuned to this frequency -- Mr 12-pack of Diet Cola. q:-)

Let's beware of methyl alcohol affect on vision, especially peripheral
vision. Some outspoken kooks claim that aspartic acid added to drinks
and sweets is "soft kill" and literally an intentional and premeditated
attack on the public.

So I put forth that the test could also be a measure of.... well if you
get the drift, then fill in the blank. Any challenge to this statement?
What is the physiological explanation then?

I'm outsmarting it... I'll change my gaze *between* the times the red
dot shows up, so I'm still getting a valid field area evaluation.
