Thanks man. I'm about ready to head into D.C. today to see the
festivities.. with fireworks on the Mall about 9:20 or 9:30 PM. This
year, as was last year, the Mall will have every Zimbo, Jemoke and
Harambe group holding their festivals. Everything except American
Nationalism you see. It should be fun to get through the security
checkpoints and so forth. I'll hope to have some photos and/or videos
of the scene. Getting back on the Metro while the other 1/2 million
spectators try to file out will be a challenge. I think you must
sacrifice seeing the Grand Finale to get on the train. In Chicago we
used to say "let's get the L out of town, and fast.. before the rush."

Yes indeed. Happy 4th of July, America. You managed to kick us
Canadians out of your country and for this, some of us are grateful.
We do try and claw our way back but now we need passports.

Keep in mind Canada loves you and needs you.

Things are fair........we have the Queen and you have Michelle...it

Thanks Arthur, and Happy belated Canada day!!

Certainly the 4th of July is a major holiday and celebration for us U.S.
citizens, perhaps it would be better this year if the economy and
unemployment were not so bad - I am afraid there are way too many folks that
just cannot really celebrate this very special day due to their current
financial condition, and distress caused by the same.

However I hope all Americans can take a moment from whatever their daily
activity brings them, and pause to reflect on this special day , the day in
which our ancestors rose up and said, no more - we will be a free people...
with a government by the people, and for the people.

I personally celebrated upon awaking this morning, by pouring myself a cup
of coffee and loading up a flight plan in FSX for the first time since March
1st, and it was great! Fairly short flight in the default 747, but I managed
to pick right up where I left off and flew without incident greasing the
landing - I was very pleased! Now that I am a homeowner again, I find my
weekends pretty full of doing yard work and such, so I don't get much free
time right now for simming., thankfully I was off yesterday and got most of
my yard work done then.

Now my wife and I are preparing for our little celebration this evening, we
will be having a cookout on the deck , with a small group of family and
friends, nothing fancy just burgers and hot dogs, with some swimming thrown
in, and hopefully we will get to see our local town's fireworks from our
deck - where they moved the fireworks to this year is not far from my house,
and I believe my deck is facing right in that direction,.

Happy Independence Day to all my fellow Americans!

Thanks, Old Bloke!
This morning's paper had printed the Declaration of Independence. I hadn't
read it since High School, over 40 years ago. It was very interesting
reading, pointing out the duties of the citizens. It specifically said that
if the government became too authoritarian, then we the people had a duty to
remove it and rebuild it to serve US.I fear that day is coming.
But we will celebrate today and reflect on our history, tragedies and
triumphs, and know that we will persevere.

Sorry to burst your bubble there, but you have the Queen as well.
Micheale Jean is temporary and although she is good at nibbling seal
parts, is NOT the Queen of Canada......just her servant.

Thanks OB...

We celebrated last night... on the 3rd.. at the airport in Addison
(KADS), the second busiest GA airport in the America. Addison puts on a
major fireworks display at the airport the day before the 4th. (I don't
know why..)

It was a flying club party outside the hanger of one of the members.

John Ward would be so jealous... the airport is closed for 3 hours and
they fly a display of warbirds around the pattern including a P-51,
Hellcat, Corsair, several T-8s, a Sky Raider and a B-24.

Hangar flying with 40 pilots, hot dogs, potato salad and margaritas. What
could be better?

Hi Gregory,
Back in about 2000-2001 I did the exact same thing...I watched the
fireworks display on the Washington Mall with some friends. It was the
hottest I had ever been, as it was a 6-hour wait, it was 97 degrees, and the
humidity was 98%. But we sat near the base of the Washington Monument, and
the fireworks were incredible.
We actually parked our car at the Pentagon parking lot and took the
Metro to L'Enfante Square. After the fireworks they had city busses take
people back to the Pentagon (and other destinations) for free. I don't know
if they still do that, but it might be worth checking out. Have fun, it
really is an incredible experience.

Hi CL
Yes, it's possible. And the number of people who disagree with the way the
current administration is screwing things up is increasing daily. Don't
believe what the media is spewing about the love fest with Obama. Ask any
American, "Has the stimulus helped you?" I have yet to hear a yes from
anyone I've talked to. When the police agree with the majority, then it can
happen. Do I want it to happen? HELL NO!!! I'm counting on the mid-term
elections in 2010 to get this country back on course.

Well.. it wasn't as hot as you describe yesterday. The weather was
partly sunny, breezy and temps low 80F. The crown was HUGE, and
Tweets is searching the web for a head count. Metro predicted they would
transport 500,000 4th of July passengers, but the daily commuter load
for Metro is 750,000 - 800,000. I would say.. and have videos showing
the crowd, that it was over 500,000 this year due to the excellent
weather conditions.

Here are some of the many photos and videos!!!!

First -- the Safety Zone sign.

http://home.comcast.net/~flightsim/July_4th_Fireworks_Saftey_Zone_2009.jpg

I was able to walk across the Monument grounds to the WWII Memorial, and
along the YELLOW path to the Korean War Memorial (which I think was a
bit lame, as was that whole war.)

Here are the pyro tubes and flat-bed trucks.

http://home.comcast.net/~flightsim/July_4th_pyro_cansiters_and_trailers_2009.wmv

Here's a link to a pyro truck photo, and an editorial about the crowds
carried by Metro. There are, of course, many other ways that event-
goer's could arrive there.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2008/jul/04/mall-exit-drill-refined-for-fourth/

Then out onto the Arlington Bridge for some KDCA takeoff shots, since
Rwy-1 was the active. Here are just a couple. 727's no longer take off
and head up the Potomac, but MD-80s still do. I was unable to hang out
there long enough to video one.

http://home.comcast.net/~flightsim/July_4th_CRJ_National_2009.wmv

http://home.comcast.net/~flightsim/July_4th_chopper_Potomac_2009.wmv

Many boaters were anchored out there waiting to see the fireworks.

Now back onto the Mall.. where the Park Police did a MUCH better job of
security than years past, where the grounds resembled a cattle pen. I
breezed through security with just a cell phone and belt-mounted camera
case. Security would poke a stick (wooden dowel) into women's bags. It
was more like prying that any real search.

Here's a band that was playing Hendrix near the Vietnam Memorial. Just
to the left of the stage was a marijuana legalization activists section.
Those '60s and Vietnam folks never seem to change. :)))

http://home.comcast.net/~flightsim/July_4th_band_Hendrix_1.wmv

http://home.comcast.net/~flightsim/July_4th_band_Hendrix_2.wmv

That's not to diminish how many boys died in the tragic Vietnam War, and
the Vietnam Memorial was VERY moving. I got all choked-up seeing the
55,000 to 60,000 names on that wall. Will be posting some of those
photos.

To keep it short.. let's fast-forward to 9:15 PM. The fireworks show
started at promptly at 9:10 with just a touch of daylight left in the
skies and lasted seventeen minutes till 9:27 PM. Here is just one of the
many stills and videos of the event.

http://home.comcast.net/~flightsim/July_4th_DC_fireworks_2009.wmv

http://home.comcast.net/~flightsim/July_4th_DC_fireworks_Grand_Finale_2009.wmv

These are AVI files compressed into WMV so they can stream. Not bad for
a cheap Canon pocket device. You'll notice some of the 1000's of
hand-held device view finder displays glowing in the dark as people
raised them to capture the scene. THAT was a new sight to see in itself.

Now.. I was down in the cheap seats with the Hispanics and Gooks around
14th street (close to the Federal Triangle Metro Station for a quick
escape) but up on Capitol Hill, it's much fancier.

http://home.comcast.net/~flightsim/July_4th_gooks_and_beers_2009.wmv

http://home.comcast.net/~flightsim/July_4th_14th_Street_2009.wmv

Even Jesus was there as seen in this "on the move" cam. LoL

http://home.comcast.net/~flightsim/July_4th_on_the_move_2009.wmv

The little Canon camera could not possibly capture the `booms and deep
reports of charges going off in the air, but PBS can, as in the second
video on their webpage below from last year, which includes canon fire.

Yes, Tom, but (and I'm probably being way too serious here) I would
imagine that the dissatisfied identifying as "us" may only be a
portion of the greater "us", and thus you would have an "us" bearing
arms against another "us". i.e. another civil war.

Also, as an Aussie observer, I'd be interested in the exact wording of
that part which "specifically said that if the government became too
authoritarian, then the people had a duty to remove it and rebuild
it." (As I might like to propose such a thing here. :-)

Hi fadeh,
