Talking about REAL strength (inner strength, strength of character, AND
physical strength), what about that Aussie' bloke, Kurt Fearnley, who just
completed the Kakoda Track.
He started only a week after winning the New York Marathon in his
wheelchair, for ~ the 7th time, and has just succeeded in traversing the
Kakoda Track:
I'm absolutely staggered - its a MAGNIFICENT effort and achievement!!!!!
I told George, and some of the other Z Force blokes, about it, and they
were almost speechless with admiration.
They couldn't comprehend how any bloke could achieve that, and neither
can I
Hats off to Kurt - onya, mate!!!!

John Ward

Yes - I heard an interview with him just this morning and saw a short
news item on TV last night.
Truly an amazing achievement. Well done Kurt. :-)

I stand in absolute awe and admiration for any person who, with any sort
of disability or serious illness.
They can get through the day and still have all it takes to give you a
sincere smile and hug - and then turn around the next day and do the
same all over again.
They have more heart and balls than I will ever have. More power to them.
~B
I spoke with Channel 7, here in Brisbane, several times while he was
still on the track, the first time was not long after he set off.
I don't know whether you get the same programs as Brisbane where you
are, but there is some sort of a segment on Kurt on this coming weekend's
"Sunday" program, on Channel 7.
My plan/hope was/is to try and arrange some sort of contact between Kurt
and the Z Force blokes - they would ALL benefit from that....
I'll probably get nowhere, but NOTHING will stop me giving it my very
best shot, and TRYING, mate.
Isn't that the very, very, least we all owe people such as these, who
have set some examples for all the rest of us......

John Ward

All the best with that John - hope you get a good result.

Thanks, mate - my thinking was/is that, aside from anything else, it
would be a way of passing the torch from an older generation to some younger
ones, since all these Z Force blokes are getting on a bit now......

Maybe worth a word to the Z force guys - perhaps they can get together
and approach one of the TV channels down your way.
Strength in numbers, as it were.
~B~
TV exposure would be the last thing the Z Force blokes would want -
they've always actively avoided any sort of public exposure or promotion.
George, for example, does a lot of talks at Primary schools, and I've
been to several with him. The little tackers all absolutely love him -
"Uncle George". :-))
That's one of the ways they try to pass on/foster what they believe to
be a useful contribution towards stronger Community spirit, values and
responsibility...
No, its that I'd be very surprised if Kurt doesn't end up being asked to
do a LOT of motivational speaking......
BTW, I got to show one of the very top blokes from Medecins Sans
Frontieres around the MacArthur Museum for a few hours yesterday - he's
having a short holiday break in Australia, and he wanted to know more about
the Pacific Theatre of WWII. What an inspirational bloke!!

pffft, and I heard on the radio this morning that Jetstar didn't let
him take his wheel chair on board. They have apparently apologised, but
wtf was that all about!

Crash - you've just got me on my favourite hobby horse. :-)
Our sons wheel chair has to be stowed in the baggage compartment.
We carry him on board - good job he is not as heavy as a regular 18 year
old. He is considerably less able bodied than Kurt.
Aircraft are just not setup for wheelchair people. There are no
regulation hold downs to secure a w/c against turbulence etc. and
getting on & off safely when in a w/c would be down right dangerous.
The one option that comes to mind is being lifted into the plane via a
fork lift as though they were common freight. There appears to be no
meaningful and dignified way for folk with a disability to access air
travel.
This matter must be addressed - but it needs a "heart transplant" on the
part of airlines, most bus travel, trains etc ..
Access to most public transport is strictly for the able bodied people.

Agree with you there mate.
BTW, I accidentally sent you an email to the wrong email address.
Fingers crossed you get it first! lol

Keep thy airspeed up, less the earth come from below and smite thee.
The version I got was he was required to check his chair in and pay for
it...
So he refused to use one of their chairs to access the aircraft and also
stopped off at the toilet on the way. Later he talked about the situation
at a meeting that the PM was at.... "the hardest crawl of my life was being
made to crawl through the public toilet floor".
Very political and manipulative...... but in this situation, fair enough I
guess.
:-P
ROTFL, mate! :-))
I had a cure for it, but I accidentally emailed it to somebody, and I
can't remember who.
Anybody here got it? :-))

WHAT, the bug or the cure?
Perhaps you sent it twice! Or did you send a blank e-mail, possibly to the
wrong person, or maybe you sent it back to the person who sent it to you. On
the other hand, you may have forgotten to attach the attachment, which was
probably caused by you hitting "send" before you finished, or did you hit
"delete" instead of "send", and now you don't know if you sent it, or who
you sent it to!!
Yep! Those are the classic symptoms of the "C-nile virus" Joh n. It's a pity
you cannot remember who you sent the cure to, as I think you are badly in
need of it, mate. :-)

Be nice to your first officer, he may be your captain at your next airline.
Yes, subsequent reports i heard also say he was asked to use an
airport chair cos they fit in the a/c, and his own chair didn't, and
then I heard he refused and "chose" to "crawl" of his own accord.
Sounds like a bit of a media beatup and a guy making a point that
really didn't need top be made, except to make a media story, but it
still doesn't detracty from the fact that air travel is not friendly
for disabled people as far as access goes.

What bug?
I can't remember what the question was, but I'm sure your answer has
been very helpful.
Thanks for taking the time - much appreciated!
BTW, do you happen to know whether anybody's ever found a cure for that
bug, mate? :-))

Bug, what bug? I thought you were referring to a cure.

Question? I don't remember asking a question!

No problem Joh n. I would have sent you a cure but someone has gone and lost
it!
