One thing that I've always found disappointing in FS is the look from above
of haze over land formations. Hills and mountains appear to be poking up
through a pool of liquid white sky that I guess is supposed to be fog or
haze. And making this worse is that frequently I get a kind of vibration or
shimmer in this vast pool over the land.

Is this normal implementation of weather effects or is there something that
can be adjusted in the display options?

Various add-on weather programs claim to 'fix' this, but it's a common
issue with FS9/FSX for which I've never found a solution. On the other
hand, X-Plane 9 and 10 are outstanding in their display of distant haze
and fog with no sharp demarcation between land and haze or clouds.
That's not a solution, but it is an alternative.

I wonder if there is a way to just "turn off" this haze?

It is inherent in FSX and cannot be adjusted natively. AS2012 has resolved
this issue according to a majority of users, including myself.

Some of this may vary a bit with the graphics card being used. I use
AS2012 and it's better but nowhere near as good as X-Plane. Here are a
couple of X-Plane examples. I don't find that I've ever taken any
screenshots in FSX of low clouds.

If you have low clouds nestled between mountain peaks, you will get a
sharp line where the land meets the cloud.

Nice pics. At least X-Plane can make the rivers run along the
valleys instead of up the sides of hills.
