I have the Age of Empires Gold Edition and it seems an OK
game yet it is not what I am looking for. What I would like to
find, if it exists, is a development game with a bit more
realism in it.
The graphics in AOE are not bad but the development is sadly
lacking. For example, I like the collection/mining of wood, gold,
stone and food. This gives an illusion of realism. Then, I was
allowed to progress into the bronze age. How could I do this
when neither copper or tin had been discovered and there were
no copper or tin mines or smelters? How could I then go on to
progress into the iron age with no iron mines or foundries? At
this point, it seemed to me that it had turned into a Sci-Fi
fantasy and turned me off.
Are there any games out there that are more realistic?
Thanks

If you have read the help files, they have a spiel to the effect that
'gold' is representative of several metals, including gold, copper, iron,
and the like... Similarly, the mining is representative of both mining and
smelting and the like, woodchopping of cutting down tree, splitting into
lumber, the whole deal...
Consider the realism of this: You have a nice community one side of the map.
You send off a lone Villager to build a Wonder on the other side. And maybe
some barracks and seige workshops while you're at it... How did he carry all
those materials over there with him?
How much work would it take for the programmers to implement the movement of
resources that way? Could it not be better spent? And would you really enjoy
shuttling things like that about? This is a RealTime Strategy, and you spend
enough time micro-managing some smelters... In real time strategy, what you
aim for is a nice amount of realism, but you don't want to do it at the risk
of harming playability... Your realism expectations are quite high =)
SciFi fantasy? Surely you joke, man!
You may find interest in a different-style game called 1602 AD... it has you
move your resources around too... lots of islands and boats... smelt iron
into steel...
In any case, check out the fun sequel to Age of Empires- Age of Kings! (a
quick web search turns up a lot) And, there's a GREAT new game that's coming
out,,, soon? Sometime August/September like... called Empire Earth, from
Sierra Studios. That one starts prior to AOE... prehistoric-like, and you
progress until you reach into the Future! yeah. and it's got Great new
feature-stuff-junk. Look into it! It MAY satisfy your realism
expectations...

allow me to add...
more fun nonrealism... Look at the villagers. These guys spring full-grown
from a building. They don't eat or sleep anytime after they're born, they
labor absolutely nonstop and completely without complaint, go absolutely
anywhere you tell them (except when they're being shot at) and- this is the
original AOE, right? They're too stupid to be able to walk past each other
when they're in each others way, but will rather stand there for hours if
you leave them unattended.
You will not find as much realism as you aim for in this or any other real-
time strategy game. It is not to be expected, or even desired. You can put
up with stupid villagers who all manage to carry all the community's
resources at all times, so surely the stand-in of gold for multiple metals
will work for you too.
