Yes. I have a pair of Happ sticks that twist at player 3 & 4 on my
custom panel and I use a adapter circuit from Ultimarc for the
translation of the signal.
It doesn't work as well as I like right now and I need to get in there
and troubleshoot it.
If you are asking about playing it on a keyboard, sure, just assign a
pair of keys close to your fire key (like perhaps Q-W for rotation
left/right, with E as fire....)
Anyone else out there using Ikari Warrior style sticks with the
Ultimar module? Any suggestions? I know there is a fairly new MS
keyboard with a couple programable knobs on it, you might want that
for your keyboard. (I saw it in a recent Maximum PC issue).
Cheers
I have an Happ optical rotary joystick that I have hooked up through a
mini-pac sometimes. (The optical board is a standard Happ opto just
like on a spinner or a trackball, so it wires right into the mini-
pac.) There are 2 issues with it. 1 - The shaft is round, so there
are no "clicks" to the turning like there were on the classic hexagon
LS-30's. 2 - Either it's because it's a round stick to hold onto, or
because there aren't enough holes on the disc per rotation, but to me,
it just doesn't give enough clicks per twist. I haven't gotten a
chance to play a real cabinet in a while, so I might have wishful
thinking on how many times I had to ungrab the Ikari joysticks just to
turn all the way around, but it just feels like I'm constantly turning
maybe 2 or 3 clicks to the left or right, and then letting the
joystick go so I can twist my hand and get another grab. Maybe it's
because on the old original sticks, you kind of held them from the
top, rather than gripping them from the side? Maybe I just haven't
lubed the shaft enough? (That's what she said.)
(For armchair helpers, yes, I've adjusted the analog settings so I'm
getting a click per each gap.)
I've though about ways to fix this, from changing the encoder disc to
have smaller gaps with the Happ Opto to actually hacking a whole USB
mouse on in place of the Happ and current encoder. But, I've
basically come to the conclusion that I am just going to get myself
setup with some real sticks and some real boards and put them in one
of my vertical JAMMA cabinets.

I'm using the Ultimarc Rotary Stick Interface, which works with the
Mechanical Ikari Style switches, (with the clicks).
Its the rotary Happ stick, not the optical like yours, (part number
is 50-5618-00) with the 12 position rotary stick, and the Ultimarc
interface translates it to the left or right rotation. When I turn it
sometimes it doesn't register, so I am curious if did not connect the
harness right or if I messed up some other way. It works, just not
perfectly, and with Ikari or Heavy Barrel etc its critical for aiming.
Hmm, I'm not familiar with how Happ encodes that one (too lazy to
check). Is it doing keystrokes, or pretending to be a mouse?
If it's keystrokes, then I'd just open up word pad and see what's
happening.
For keystrokes, if you get a "z" or "x" on every click, then you have
some sort of issue with your MAME probably. If you don't, then either
the encoder or the physical contacts or bad. You should be able to
tell by putting a small "tick mark" on your joystick if it's one
position that's bad or if it's the encoder that's bad.
If it's pretending to be a mouse, then I'd consider looking at the
settings of your optical/analog controls, and getting those maxed out
so every click is registering. Sometimes, if you're sensitivity, etc
isn't high enough, every 3 clicks get sent as 2 clicks.
Sorry to be so brief...

Its not Happ, its the encoder from Ultimarc I think; because its the
device that is translating the switch changes to left or right
rotation.
I'll fiddle with it next weekend and get back to you.
