Well I saw sequels to Space Invaders and Galaga (not necessarily for
MAME) and thought people still like those games to make them.

Today I was reading the Donkey Kong page of Wikipedia and wondered if
there were sequels to it. Not Donkey Kong Jr. or Donkey Kong III (latter
sucked IMO). More like "new" games, so from 1990 to today.

I could imagine a 3D first person shooter. Mario running around with pump
gun or chain saw and... *LOL*

Nah, would be cool to have a modern sequel of all those classic games now.

There was of course Donkey Kong 64, which wasn't released in arcades
but on the N64. And it was quite different when compared to the
original, it was more of a collect-a-thon. But the old DK game was
included as a minigame.

Now I remember Donkey Kong Country or something. I believe it was on an
SNES already.

Still a 3D ego shooter, like Mario with a rail gun, would be cool. *g*

Donkey Kong Country 1, 2 & 3 on the SNES, yes.

That looks like the game, thanks.

What about Donkey Kong II (released a few months ago) and meant
to work on the original DK hardware?

Wasn't that "Donkey Kong Jr."?

Nope. Within the last year a new version called "DK II - Jumpan
Returns" was relased. See the links below to show where it
can be found, details about it and also some youtube videos of
it in action.

BTW, DK Jr. ran on it's on hardware (DK and DK Jr. hardware is
similar, but not the same).

Is this a hack? I never saw or even heard about it.

Yes, it is a complete rewrite of the Donkey Kong code, so
it has all new levels, intermissions, etc. Very impressive
work.

Thanks, I saw the screen shots of the page you provided. I should try to
get one of these and play with them. :-)

It's funny I watched the film "The King of Kong" less than a week ago
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0923752/
Great documentary and well worth watching

From the description it sounds interesting. I hope they show it some time
and I note it. Thanks.

I actually thought it was crap, to be honest. Though to be fair, it may just
be because I thought Billy Mitchell was a complete and utter narcissistic
w*nker - a sad little man who is still desperately grasping to his past
"fame". And don't get me started on those adjudicators... farce!

The IMDB synopsis makes it sound like a deep documentary, with life lessons
to be learned, blah blah blah. Rubbish. It's no more than what it appears at
face value.

Just my opinion.

----- following contains spoliers------------------

It's for those reasons that I found it interesting. :-)
The two protagonists were so totally different........
Billy Mitchell was most comical with him almost trying to come across
as a "rock god" and wouldn't you have just loved to punch his face ?
He was so full of crap throughout and so immature where he was
blanking Wiebe at the arcade.
And yet Steve Wiebe was the total opposite and came across as a humble
really nice family guy.

It was ludicrous that the adjudicators wouldn't at first accept a
video tape from Wiebe and needed to see him perform live but readily
accepted one from Mitchell even though there appeared to be some
breaks in the continuity of his video.
It was good to see how Day's attitude changed to Wiebe
once he had proved himself "in the field "

I don't think it was intended as a deep documentary at all.
I however thought it was just an interesting insight into the
characters involved and if you are interested in video games well
worth watching.

Mine too :-)

No, but that's what the IMDB synopsis would have you believe! :)

Whilst on the subject, if you want to see a *really* crappy movie, but
totally dedicated to arcade games, see if you can pick up "Joysticks" from
your local video shop (look in the section with the old VHS tapes with
really faded jackets). A friend of mine bought it for me (new) off the net
about a year ago - it's a laugh, but not quite "so bad that it's good" - or
perhaps it was "even too bad to be so bad it's good"???

<http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085764/>

Just for the fun of it, I tried tracing the cast through IMDB, and almost
none of them have done any acting since. What does that tell you?

Then of course there's "The Wizard", of which I've only seen the 1st 45 mins
(where my burnt copy crapped out)...

Anyone here ever hear anything about "My Life in 8 Bits"???

It's always worth taking IMDB's synopsis and ratings with a pinch of
salt :-)

Yep, I've got plans to build one. I've got the DK, I'm just waiting for
the artwork.
