MAME & other emulators on a 200Mhz pc

I have recently been given an a gift a 200mhz pentium mmx laptop with
windows 98 on it. As Mame the consensus seems to be that mame gets
slower over time I was wondering what mame version I should use to try
get some 80s/90s games (early to mid 90s obviously) working. Also what
other emulators would work ok on this machine?

Try MAME32.36-ran fine on my original setup of a 23MB @166MHz.

Yep, something like that era. And no bloated Windows. If possible I'd
take DOS.

Anreas taking DOS is like me taking CP/M, not going to happen! Don't
worry about bloat with Windows, worry about Linux bloat, a real and
tangiable phenomenon!

Nope. Well, okay. *g*

Linux is more or the less the kernel. Sure it became bigger over the
years. More functions, more drivers.

But many people mix up GUIs like KDE or Gnome with Linux. Those gotten
bloated too, no doubt. But the Linux kernel with < 2 MB plus some essential
stuff like binutils and shells are not really bloated. They not fill 1/100
of today's computer memory. And yet you can build your own and strip
down. There are Linux OS which run completely from a 512 MB (not GB) USB
key.

Still DOS is way smaller than Linux. Has no network stuff by default and
other things Linux has. So I'd use DOS for a MAME cab on an old computer.

I ran Mame32 version .55 on my old Pentium I 133 with Win98. Make sure
you scan for viruses and disable the virus scanner.

I know, it's terrible, DSL now takes *50* megabytes! Incredible! How
am I supposed to run that on my Sinclair Spectrum? I suppose if I
missed out the GUI I could make it smaller. I could move to SLiTaz,
which is 25 megabytes, I suppose I'll have to give up on running off a
single floppy.

You don't get this problem with Windows or Mac OS, linux could learn a
lot from them!
