I am helping build a new MAME cabinet, and I wondered if anyone had a
lead on a SMALL arcade trackball. Marble size is fine. Will probably
use the Apache Controls Blackhawk spinner to control it. (The spinner
supports x/y/z axis, so it has 2 axis available for a trackball.)

A couple of years ago, I tried tracking down sub 2.5" trackballs, and
they were all crap. They're out there. Many for kiosks. And, they
just don't seem to work right. I even had the company rep at a place
that makes industrial ones tell me the "weren't suitable for arcade"
quality. After finding one in a real kiosk, I agreed. The two small
ones I've had on keyboards (an old wireless USB, and my ancient
powerbook 150) both had problems with the tiny rollers. The size was
so small that they had rubber grabs instead of the steel ones. The
small ball ones on "thumb" mouses by logitech or microsoft or the
slightly bigger kensingtons have similar issues. Most are optical and
mounted on 3 small low friction points. They do not "spin" like you
expect an arcade trackball to spin.

I came to the conclusion that...unless it's being marketed for arcade
quality, that anything available smaller than 2.5" was no good.

I'd seriously just use a 2.5" arcade quality one by one of the usual
suspects.
