CHARTER
[ Votetaker's note: The last item on this ballot is a vote to rename
the entire rec.games.deckmaster.* hierarchy to
rec.games.trading-cards.*. This includes the existing groups
rec.games.deckmaster (unless the *.misc group simply replaces it) and
rec.games.deckmaster.marketplace, and the new groups in this
reorganization. This is to prevent groups which should be in the same
hierarchy from being spread between two. This has precedent in the
comp.windows.ms.* to comp.os.ms-windows.* reorganization, and has been
approved by David Lawrence in this instance. -- Ron ]
NOTE: The following lists the groups via the shorthand notation
"rec.games.?.*". The "rec.games.?" represents whatever base hierarchy name
results from the vote to rename the group, either rec.games.deckmaster
or rec.games.trading-cards.
rec.games.?.announce (moderated)
This group is for various important announcements regarding
trading card games. Topics include product announcements
from game manufacturers (Wizards of the Coast, TSR, etc.),
information on tournaments and gaming conventions, final versions
of expansion card lists (possibly along with one or two early
versions, at the discretion of the moderator), and other similar
items. By making this a moderated newsgroup, it should be a
fairly low-volume newsgroup, with little or no "fluff". Free
form discussions will not take place in this group. Rather, any
discusions generated by postings to the "announce" newsgroup should
be moved to the appropriate companion newsgroup. Announcements of
sales, auctions, or trades of cards are not permitted in this group,
as they belong in the newsgroup rec.games.?.marketplace.
The moderator for this group will be Alan Glover (agl...@acorn.co.uk).
Submissions for the newsgroup should be sent to the address
"announce...@acorn.co.uk". Email for the moderator, regarding
administrative details of the group, should be sent to the address
"anno...@acorn.co.uk".
rec.games.?.magic.rules
Discussion of the rules for the trading card game "Magic: The
Gathering". Topics include Q&A about the general rules,
individual card wordings, rules errata from Wizards of the Coast,
and other similar topics. It is expected that the Net Representative
for Wizards of the Coast will have a major role in answering
questions asked within this group, although other individuals
are also free to answer any questions.
rec.games.?.magic.strategy
Discusssion of the strategy of the trading card game "Magic: The
Gathering". Topics include deck building strategies (both
general ideas and specific useful decks), useful/interesting
card combinations, general winning strategies during play, and
other similar subjects regarding how to win the game.
rec.games.?.magic.misc
Discussion of all other aspects of "Magic: The Gathering".
Topics include information about the various cards and expansions
sets for the game, as well as other topics deemed to be specific
to M:tG. Postings regarding sales, auctions, or trades of M:tG
cards are not permitted in this group, as they belong in the
companion newsgroup rec.games.?.marketplace.
rec.games.?.jyhad
Discussion of the trading card game "Jyhad". Topics include
the rules of the game, strategies for playing the game, and
information about the various cards and expansions sets for
the game, as well as other topics deemed to be specific to Jyhad.
Postings regarding sales, auctions, or trades of Jyhad cards are
not permitted in this group, as they belong in the companion
newsgroup rec.games.?.marketplace.
rec.games.?.misc
Trading card game discussions which do not fit under any of the other
newsgroups in the hierarchy. Examples include existing games which
do not generate much traffic (such as TSR's Spellfire), new games
which do not yet have a game-specific newsgroup within the hierarchy,
and any other topic which does not fit within the charter of the
other newsgroups. It is anticipated that as new trading card games
are introduced, they will be discussed here first, and if the traffic
levels warrant it, a proposal will be generated to create a new group
specifically for any such game.
It is highly recommended that postings in .misc related to a
specific game have a subject line beginning with the game's name
(or a suitable standard abbreviation) in uppercase letters within
brackets, such as "[SPELLFIRE] Question about drawing cards". This
provides easy identification of posts for particular games, allowing
readers to more easily select or ignore articles for those games.
Standard names/abbreviations will be decided as games come out, and
will be regularly published in the FAQ for this group.
Reasonings
==========
The renaming of rec.games.deckmaster.* to rec.games.trading-cards.* is
being proposed primarily because "Deckmaster" is a trademarked name
used by the company Wizards of the Coast for their trading card games.
There is concern that using "deckmaster" in the hierarchy name is
inappropriate for groups which are supposed to cover all trading card
games. For example, if TSR's "Spellfire" were to generate enough
traffic to warrant an individual newsgroup, the name
"rec.games.trading-cards.spellfire" would seem to make more sense than
"rec.games.deckmaster.spellfire", since Spellfire is technically not a
Deckmaster game. Also, there is already a precedent of another game
manufacturer (Steve Jackson) refusing to take a presence in the
hierarchy as long as another company's trademark is part of the name.
Therefore, the proposal includes changing the base hierarchy name to a
more generic term. "trading-cards" was chosen as the new name during
a straw poll held within r.g.d. Note that the proposal is worded such
that this renaming is completely independent of the other proposals.
Either all groups (new and existing) will be named
"rec.games.deckmaster.*", or all groups will be named
"rec.games.trading-cards.*". The success or failure of this vote will
not affect the outcome of the votes for the creation of the individual
newsgroups, just the base hierarchy name.
The current traffic in rec.games.deckmaster (r.g.d) is averaging
around 340 articles per day. According to the 8/25/94 listing of "Top
25 News Groups by number of articles", r.g.d is the fifth most active
newsgroup overall, and the second most active newsgroup among those in
the "Big Seven", with only misc.jobs.offered having more articles. It
is clear that the creation of r.g.d.marketplace, although it certainly
helped reduce the volume in r.g.d, was not enough, and further
subdivision is required.
The majority of the traffic falls into one of two discussion areas:
issues pertaining to the game "Magic: The Gathering", and issues
pertaining to the game "Jyhad". Jyhad is the newer of the two games,
but is currently generating around 30 articles/day, between postings
in r.g.d and the recently created group alt.games.jyhad. It makes
sense to split the traffic into newsgroups specific to a particular
game, as readers of one game's traffic are typically not interested in
another game's traffic. This will also provide for easy
expansion/separation in the future, as new trading card games are
introduced and gain popularity. The upper-level .misc group will
exist to hold discussions about new games until such time as traffic
warrants separation (if it ever does).
Furthermore, the traffic for Magic: The Gathering consists of a large
number of questions about rules (both general rules and rules
regarding specific cards). There is also a large amount of discussion
regarding the strategy of the game (how to build good decks, how to
play various card combinations, etc). The rules questions account for
over a third of the total postings, and strategy discussion account
for over 10% of the traffic. It is difficult to wade through these
postings if you are interested in other aspects of the game (humor,
info on Wizards of the Coast, expansion info, etc). Therefore, the
proposal includes a further subdivision of ".magic" into
".magic.rules", ".magic.strategy" and ".magic.misc". The traffic
level for Jyhad does not currently warrant further subdivision,
although if traffic does increase substantially in the future, a
similar subdivision could be done at that time.
When a newsgroup is subdivided, it is standard to rename the original
base group to *.misc, hence that proposal is included here, resulting
in rec.games.deckmaster.misc. (Or rec.games.trading-cards.misc if the
renaming is successful.) This will serve as a catchall place for
issues not pertaining to one of the other game-specific newsgroups.
It will also serve as a "springboard" for new trading card games in
the future. When a new game is introduced, postings will start out in
the "r.g.d.misc" group, and if significant steady traffic is
generated, a new group can be created for that game.
The "announce" newsgroup is also a reasonably standard group within
subdivided hierarchies. As there are certain types of postings which
are of an "announcement" variety, and a general feeling that these
postings should be more easily accessible in a low-volume low-noise
newsgroup, this proposal includes r.g.d.announce. The group will be
moderated. A moderator has been selected, and addresses are included
in the charter for the group.
Traffic over a 28-day period (8/27/94 - 9/23/94) has been analyzed to
get an estimate of how this traffic would fit into the proposed
structure. The results are as follows:
Total articles in r.g.d: 8932
Total articles in a.g.j: 287 [Not counting crossposts with r.g.d]
------------------------------
Total articles: 9219
# of Average Overall
Appropriate group arts arts/day Percentage
----------------- ---- -------- ----------
*.magic.rules 3227 115 35.0%
*.magic.strategy 1078 38 11.7%
*.magic.misc 3194 114 34.6%
*.jyhad 1156 41 12.5%
*.announce 38 1 0.4%
*.misc 147 5 1.6%
*.marketplace 379 14 4.1%
----------------- ---- -------- ----------
Total 9219 329 100.0%
[NOTE: The articles that are indicated as belonging in "marketplace"
represent articles that were inappropriately posted, as the marketplace
group already exists. Note that the marketplace group is currently
getting around 250 articles/day, so that means that 95% of the
marketplace traffic has been successfully moved out of the main
group.]
This traffic analysis indicates that the proposed split will be a good
fit with the current traffic patterns. Rather than having 330
articles per day, we'll have two groups with just over 110 articles/day,
two groups with around 40 articles/day, a low-volume .announce group,
and a low-to-moderate volume .misc group for anything else. Note that
the traffic for the .misc group is expected to rise by the end of the
year, as several games are expected to be released, with the most
popular looking to be a game based on "Star Trek: The Next Generation".
