How would one go about locating a noob-friendly TF2 server which has voice
comms switched off? It's mostly for my son, who's now into double figures so
I don't think a bit of stylised spleen or other body parts on the screen is
going to do too much damage, but the vitriol with which some players talk to
each other may still offend.
I could also do with trying out some of the other characters, particularly
the spy, and working out tactics to stop me being blown away regardless of
my disguise...
You can switch off voice comms in the game options. Its a tick box.
I guess that will switch off all voice comms without stopping the in
game sounds. Which is what I guess you want.

It did indeed help - although he worked out how to do it himself.
Bloody kids - you try to help them out, and they go and turn into geeks when
you're not looking!
He seems to have found a nice noob-friendly server, too. It suddenly emptied
at a level change, though, and the next one he tried was just dominated by a
soldier who seemed to have found a "sweet spot" on ctf_turbine and along
with his tame medic, made everyone's life a misery with unfeasible
single-shot kills...
I almost exclusively use the EGO servers. -=EGO=- I think.

With admin's on the server quite a bit, bad language is not tolerated at
all. They run many types of servers and if there is an admin it is kept
very clean.
That's the servers I let me son play on as well. Shit I even got a
warning for saying "shit"?!?!? :-)

Thanks, Jethro - they sound good. He can't try them out tonight, though -
busy burning 200 DVDs of the Guides' Centenary celebrations!
I'm thinking of getting him his own Steam ID though. I was getting a bit
cross with him for not paying attention, mostly because he was ruining my
stats!
We waited quite a while before we let our son play those "violent"
games. And my wife was resistant the whole way... and still is. We
waited until he was 14 before even letting him do TF2.
We play Age of Chivalry (free mod) now which is a hack n' slash but the
idiots and their language are just terrible. I end up muting half the
players because they are such idiots. I also am used to EGO servers were
you need to keep it clean.
Played Insurgency (free mod) and got warned again for 'language!' by
admin's for saying shit. :-) Got to learn to let go of the talk key when
"swearing".

My lad does practical pistol training in real life - he's actually passed
the safety course, so he's better qualified than I am.
He still learns a thing or two from his old man, though. He was pretty
awestruck when I showed him how to lead his shots to accomodate
time-to-target wen it's moving. On 2fort with the pyro's flare gun. Did it
twice, so he now believes (wrongly) that they weren't just lucky shots. :)

To be honest, that hadn't occurred to me. I've got a pretty reliable 256kbps
upstream - would that be enough?
It would be enough for about 6 players. I ran a server on a 256k connection
for a year or so, and the 7th or 8th player that connects usually overloads
your bandwidth. This bandwith limitation does not apply to players on your
side of the internet if they use the local IP to connect to the server.

Amazing community, fully noob friendly, and the age range is from
7 to 60! Zero tolerance on swearing/racism/talking down to the other
players, check the forums out first just to see how good the place is
for any age range.

Just came in and heard some idiots ranting in the game - I was cross with
him for turning voice back on, but he hadn't!
There was an unusual option in the main menu: "Mute players" - what's all
that about?
