Everyone here knows where you mean, it's one of the most frequently asked
questions.
You can get to the ladder, you're just not trying :) For a start, jump late:
the edge is probably much further forward than you think it is. If you test it
by quicksaving and deliberately running off the edge without jumping, you'll get
the idea of just how close you can go without falling.
Secondly, remember to let go of the jump key once you're airborne. Many people
have made the leap to the ladder, only to bounce off because they're still
holding down the key. No jump key = cling.
Keep trying, you'll get it.

Run, then jump. Make sure you're not pressing the jump key when you reach
the ladder or you'll bounce off.

Crouching will have no effect. That activates the long jump module, which you
don't get until much later in the game (just before entering Xen).

'fraid so :)
If landing on a flat surface, your landing spot may be further away if you lift
your feet by holding down the crouch key, but the power of the jump is the same.
It won't make any difference jumping across to a vertical ladder.

Well, not exactly. You said crouching immediately before jumping will boost
your jump. It won't. However, crouching whilst airborne before landing will
extend the jump.

LOL! Paul's correct, crouching simply raises up your legs. That's why
there's no need to "crouch-jump" while going for the ladder mentioned in a
previous post; you simply need to release the jump button before you get to
the ladder so you don't bounce off.
Crouching can help when trying to reach a higher area, since it pulls up
your legs and allows them to clear a high obstruction. And while I've never
really noticed it, I imagine Paul's correct in that it could slightly
prolong a simple jump because your legs are tucked up and it would take an
extra couple milliseconds before your feet touch the ground.

Well I'll be jiggered!
Mind you, I think anyone who designs a map with a 248-unit jump has overly high
expectations of player skill ;)
