UK2 beginner servers might be a good place to practice. Although you often
get some seasoned players there, but because of the kill restriction you
still can have reasonable game as a newbie.

Just keep practicing, you'll get the hang of it, it's not that complicated
really. Learning the maps is probably a good idea. Find the spots that give
you the greatest advantages etc. Watch other players and what they do.

Happy fragging

Welcome to the addiction that is CS. :)

**Standard Newbie Guide V 1.1**

- Never duck unless you are purposely hiding. It makes your head
about the only target they'll hit if they aim a bit high due to
hitbox handling.

- Stay with the others in a clump. Single players are fodder, but
a team of 4-5 people can clean a map quicker than a window washer
can whip out his squeegee. Let your teammates soak up the hits and
you finish off the leftovers.

- Be frugal. Save some money. Be a scrounge. Hang back a little
bit and pick up other people's weapons if you are low on cash.
(common for a newbie to need funds midgame)

- Armor works - buy it. Does little vs guns, but is golden
against grenades. That last 10hp at the end of the round
may be yours while your armorless enemy is worm food.

- Always buy a grenade. Always. Save it for the very end
of the round and resist the urge to spam with the newbies.
When the enemy is closing on you at the end and you all are
damaged and bleeding, it can take out 2-3 weakened opponents.
Also good for a kamakazi attack at the end - hold it and
pull then pin right before they shoot you. You drop the grenade
and it goes off a second later. What else you going to do
when 3 opponents are chargin you and you have 10HP? :)

- Nightvision is very nice for a new player - often overlooked
but great accessory for the sneaky player until they memorize the
maps.

- When a grenade is being thrown at you, turn to the side
quickly(vision) - It makes the possible flash effect about
half as bad and often JUST light enough to make out enemy shadows.
(usually not, but it helps some)

- If you are on defense, run back and top off your ammo
after the first minute or two. Crutial for ammo-hungry
weapons like the Colt, AK, and Auto-shotty.

- When you are one of the last persons on the map, pick up
weapons and upgrade, keeping yours as full as possible.
Also, tossing that AWM you run across into a dark corner
is good - don't let them get a free gun if you can.

Good weapons:

Pistols:
P228 - negligible recoil and faster reload. Think of it as
a double-powered Glock. No burst-mode, though.
great ammo capacity. Best pistol in the game.
Roughly the same power as the USP unsilenced.
Better clip capacity as well.

USP - Accurate and better power than the Glock.
Silent when used with the silencer. Almost as good
as a Colt/AR-15 rifle in the right hands for long-range
plinking. A major bonus for CTs as they get this superb
weapon for free every round. First round of the game,
toss the glock and buy a DE or USP if you are T.
Note:
Lower powered, though, when silenced than any other gun.
Plinking and sniping only in silenced mode.

Buy this for the silencer effect, not for damage.

Desert Eagle - powerful and does 60-70 damage to your head
from a headshot. In the endgame, it is as good as an
auto-sniper rifle - 20-30 damage per hit is often good
enough to finish off weakened opponents instantly.
Also goes through boxes and doors. Chews through
ammo, though.

SMGs:
P90 - The uber-SMG. It has a fearsome accuracy and large
clip as well as one of the fastest firing rates.
3-5 shot quick bursts work best. Blaap Blaap Blaap.

UMP - The best SMG, IMO - because it goes through doors and
boxes or one wall. It also bypasses armor like the
higher-powered rifles. Watch your ammo, though.
Ammo IS interchangeable with the USP, though, so
they also make a great combo - your USP basically never
runs out of ammo OR you can pick up dead people's USPs
and feed it.

Shottys:
12-Gauge Pump - hard to aim but brutally effective for defense.
Not recommended for a newbie, but it is inexpensive.
In the hands of a pro, though, it is as good as an AWM
in close-quarters. Boom - dead. Boom - dead. Missing
gets you dead in return, though(grin). Very unforgiving just
like the AWM in that way. I use this versus AWMers
believe it or not as even if they DO hit me for 83 damage
from arm shot, I do almost the same in return AND reload
faster. They are going to take some damage reguardless
of what cheat or hack they are running. Damage is basically
impossible to dodge as well. You see hackers slow down
when they see this around a corner with their wallhack
as it is like stepping on a mine and can insta-kill them.
(great to watch when you are in spectator mode - heh)

It's the only weapon other than the AWM that they fear and
that can kill you in one shot reliably. Great bragging rights
as well if you can creep up behind them.

Auto-Shotty - I get most of my kills with this weapon. Very
underappreciated. Very lethal. It takes 4 shots to
kill a full health opponent, so start reloading as
soon as you start firing(can do both at the same time)
to be able to get 8-9 shots off before running out of ammo.
(two kills is possible using this trick)

Note - because of the way the engine deal with shots,
the shotguns are different. They *always* shoot where you
point them with no deviation or error. The difference is that
they have spread from that point in a small cone. This basically
means that if you put your crosshair on the target, at least one
pellet will hit them reguardless of range. Most often, several
will hit. It can also, therefore, double as a pistol for long
range plinking(not recommended, though, as a Glock fires faster)

Rifles:(aka - the good toys)
Colt/AR-15 - Accuracy, silencer, and good cost. A very nice
weapon. Pick one up if it's lying around and you are
playing T. Famous for the headshots from nowhere.
If you are more than about 40 ft from them, and they have
the silencer on, you don't see or hear anything other than
the bullets that hit. Newbies often think people are
cheating when they get tagged by three bullets and die
without hearing anything. It's a Colt. Nasty weapon. :)

Aug & Commando - These are the best weapons in the game - I get my
second highest number of kills with these. Accurate, headshot
machines with a scope. Fire off 1-2 shot bursts only
with a .5-1.0 second pause between them - it will work
as well as an auto-sniper and give you almost Scout
accuracy. The Commando has a better scope and the
AUG a bit better accuracy.

I often forgo a scout or auto-scout and use this as
a sniper rifle. Bam...Bam...Bam... Same rate of fire
as the autosniper and yet half the recoil while zoomed
AND full auto if they get in close. Larger clip, too.

With it or the Commando/AUG, you can also fake people out
with 1 second waits between shots - they think you are
plinking them with a Scout and then find out it's a
burst of bullets coming their way when they stick their head
out. 1-3 shot bursts are best.

Scout - The second best sniper rifle as you can move decently fast
while zoomed/get out of the way. It also has great
accuracy, lower noise, and a faster reload time than
a an AWP. The AWP is a waste of money as a good player
can do the same job as an AWP with the Scout or AUG.
A newbie will just die and waste a lot of money on the AWM.
Using a Scout instead at least gives the newbie a chance
to do some damage.

Auto Sniper(SIG) - CT only weapon but the best sniper rifle in the
game. It's less money than the AWM and is effectively a
semi-auto Scout. It's almost as good as the AUG/Commando
in terms of versatility and has a nice sized clip.

The CT Auto Sniper is technically a superior weapon in
every way, but it is too expensive when the Commando does
just as good a job in the right hands.

Update:
On the new guns - The new guns are not as good as the old standbys
with the possible exception of the Glock-Rifle(the FAMAS, iirc).
3-shot bursts are standard on the M1A1 in real life, but in CS,
this gives you your burst without the learning curve. JUst wait
half a second between shots with it.

Generally true, I only use duck to see over objects (hit duck quickly and
you can see higher, go figure).

Be sure not to get TOO close though, blocking is bad!

Generally if you cant afford full armour and a rifle, dont buy anything
(save a def kit as a ct on bomb maps), save it all for next round.

Only ever buy full armour, cheaper stuff is generally useless.

Agreed, choose the time of flinging wisely.

Nightvision, in my experience, is more of a hinderance than a help. Sort
your gamma levels instead.

Turn on most incoming grenades, soon you will be able to hear the difference
a He makes from a Smoke / flash. Beware the Heaton flash trick (throwing a
smoke then attacking, as they turn away from the presumed flash).

Bah, save you ammo instead, rarley will I run out with any gun. I only but
1 clip for the awp, for instance.

If you are last man, just try and do the objective, dont piss about, just
get on with it. You will probably die, but die trying.

Deagle / USP / Glock. Use no others, you need no others (though 5-7 and
elites are funs :D ).

MP5 and P90 (prefer MP5 myself).

MP5 is one of the best learning guns.

Both good guns, M3 being my favourite of the two for the power, auto runs
out of ammo too fast for my liking, though nice and powerful up close.

Best gun in the game is AK-47, next best rifle is colt, then aug, then sig.

AK has the power, while not as accurate as colt at distance, you will rarely
have to fire it so.

I have said it before and I will say it again:

AWP > any other sniper rifle, with equal skills taken into account.
