First of all , although this game got 10's all over the place, its far
from perfect. First in race modes when you get killed you should
respawn at last check point with the vehicle you chose at the
beginning... NOT a scooter. Next the Waypoint markers should be a
different color other than yellow as its hard to see in daytime. And
last but not least, the idea to have the option of having pistols with
heavy weapons is dumb in MP Since if your put in such a game your
always forced to look for a better weapon as you always spawn with
pistols...those are the top 3 complaints but there are more that
really need to be fixed. Oh and how great would it be to have the same
type of replay mode as halo 3 has?

Halo, Schmalo... I agree with you in that there are a lot of faults to this
game... sure it's technically superior to SA, but better? No. SA is better
than this game. I mean I could go on and on about what you can do in SA and
what you can't do in IV. IV is technology over story, SA is story over
technology.

actually, when it came out SA was easily the best looking etc of the
games so far, so really at the time it wasn't the case.

I'm still bugged by next gen games which really do seem to be all
about looks.

Why do you have to ruin it for me, Paul??? I was all set to defend SA

diffuse the situation! No fair!!!

Not really. SA was land mass over technology. Vice City was story over land
mass.

Each of these games pushes a particular envelope- and in SA it was simply
the scope for exploration. A lot of cool things disappeared (such as
rampages) and there were welcome and unwelcome additions (such as swimming
and girlfriends, respectively), but the "plot" in SA is pathetic compared to
earlier incarnations of the game. This thread is exactly the same as the SA
thread that ensued just after its PS2 release, while us PC users waited for
that version. I still remember trolls griping about the main character being
black. I remember the misgivings about a largely rap-based soundtrack, after
the wonderful radio stations in VC.

All you people complaining about the faults and shortcomings of GTAIV will
be doing exactly the same when GTAV is released, and comparing it to the
great storyline and characters in GTAIV.

Sorry, but I have to disagree. I don't have any affinity for these
characters, I am often working with people who I would rather have the
option to at least give a good slap to, the accents are wearing on my
nerves, and I really don't have the urgency to play this one as I have
with most of the others.

Having said that there are still flashes of great humour, stunning
graphics, some interesting story lines and lots of other stuff to
like.

BTW I was one of the people who grumbled about the black thing in SA,
but mainly as the violence level seemed to have been ramped up. What i
should have said though, and it is true of GTAIV, is that a lot of the
humour in these games comes from their very un PC attitude, jokes are
based pretty much around national/racial characteristics and in jokes
on the locations/situations. I personally think CJ was the best all
round character we have had.

I'm going to jump on your bandwagon, Paul. I didn't have any problem with
the story and characters being black... I actually thought that was very
GTA, no offense to black people...

CJ was a much better protagonist than Nico.... Sure his whole reason for
coming back to SA kind of got lost but is Nico's any clearer? I'm a broken
record- I miss jump jets, jet packs, parachutes, go-karts, hover craft, Sam
Jackson, James Woods, Gun ranges, work-outs, degrees of expertise in weapons
and motorcycles... ETC, ETC, ETC. In IV I can't even catch "Jayvon" on a
motorcycle...

I am really beginning to appreciate the car handling in IV but the
bikes just seem to lock up and slide all the time, and there's always
cars throwing themselves at you at just the right speed to catch you
out... it's a bitch.

I agree withyou on that one. I can't seem to get the last mission and
if I could I'd get 100% completion. Is ther a way thouh to go back to a
previous mission if the storyline gets too hard to do?

I've only seen GTAIV in action over someone's shoulder. I won't be playing
it 'til it's out on PC.

All I was commenting on was that with SA there was initially a similar
backlash to the story/characters/music/losses, and welcoming of the little
extras, when it came out. That dwindled into general acceptance quite
quickly, and the same will happen with GTAIV's complaints, to the extent
that when GTAV comes out (or the next location variation that uses the GTAIV
engine), that too will be compared unfavourably, but this time with the
GTAIV you're all playing now.

I was ambivalent about CJ throughout the whole of SA. He was weak and ambled
from mission to mission, pushed and pulled by the support cast, with no
clear direction. Tommy and Claude had primal motives for what they were
doing, and it sounds like Niko does too. That can only be a good thing, even
if the motives themselves are unpleasant.

The one thing I really hate about the bikes is that you can be going at
speed, but if you lean forward to gain speed, the bike kicks out from under
you, sending you this way and that....

I really have to disagree with you here. Every GTA up until now as added
features... GTA IV is the first game to eliminate features from the previous
games. I don't think that those eliminations will be forgiven. What did we
gain? Graphics... that's really it. I mean in SA we could own businesses,
grab a plane and fly out to sea as far as we wanted... GTAIV is all about
limitations... While IV is a marvel, no doubt, SA is far superior

Wow, I have to respectfully disagree. CJ had the clearer mission, which
wasn't that clear. But Tommy? He was supposed to find out about some
stolen drugs, and ended up running Vice City?

Well the only things that spring to mind with SA in terms of "losses" are
the rampages and the decent radio, so although I'd argue there were "lost"
features in SA, that's not the point I was trying to make. Broadly speaking,
there was antipathy toward SA compared with VC, in the same way there was
antipathy toward VC compared with GTA3 (only two islands, and the flat
geography compared with Lib City). Each time, it took a while for the newer
game to gain favour, and because the games were getting bigger, the gripes
were more and took longer to dwindle. It's easy for the PC-only player like
me to be more objective with such trends because our opinions aren't skewed
by actually playing the game. By the time we get to see it, everyone's
settled down and is enjoying it, and bugs have been fixed. ;o)

> Wow, I have to respectfully disagree. CJ had the clearer mission, which

You're talking complete bollocks.

;o) Actually, you're not, but I couldn't let that "respectfully disagree"
crap go by without comment: This is supposed to be a group full of
Columbine-inducing, cop-murdering lunatics with a grudge (if you believe the
press we get), the sort who use a baseball bat during disagreements, not
respect ;o)

Anyway, I could see Claude's mission as starting as empire building and
finishing as revenge. Tommy's started as self-preservation and finished as
empire building. CJ's is simple - regaining respect, ultimately exposing
traitors and corrupt cops. However, it's hidden under so many other plots
(Catalina, OG Loc, Truth, the whole casino thing and that CIA bloke) it's
lost entirely. The side missions attempt, and fail, to weave into the plot,
while on the previous games they stayed as just side missions. The most
ridiculous one is where you end up chasing OG Loc to try and revive the
rapper's career you helped destroy in the first place.

The thing is, it's all down to subjective opinion, so what works for one
person doesn't for another. This post will still be available in five years
or so, though. When GTA4:VC or GTAV come out, I'll revisit my prediction
that people will gripe about how bad it is compared to GTA4.

Actually, I'll temper that slightly. If they based the next incarnation of
GTA in the 80s using the GTA4 engine, I can't see anyone complaining. I'd
buy a console for that even if they used the exact same music that was on
the original Vice City...

"So many" being the key phrase... the game's huge!!!!

I love it!!!!

The side missions attempt, and fail, to weave into the plot,

But they are fun nonetheless...

GTA4:VC sounds like a cool game.. how would that work? IV engine running VC
story?

Perhaps (I don't much like the karts), but either way it leaves a gaping
rift in the plotline....

No- conceited. ;o)
Actually, what prompted that observation was the thread on
alt.games.half-life regarding its ten-year anniversary. The guy who proposed
the RFD is basically saying "See. I was right". I don't know if a
pre-emptive "I told you so" is even more pretentious than that, though.
Perhaps I'll be quiet, now.

Well VC engine running the VC landscape, at least - the same as Liberty
City's facelift between GTA3 and GTA4. I don't think it would work well,
though - VC's charm was in the timeframe it was set.
I'd still buy it if it was just a port of the old story and soundtrack, but
of course a new story, and characters would be necessary for it to sell to
more discerning players...

well VC stories is bull putty. I always had a Scarface feeling on VC
and the real thing has been done now, so don't know what they would do
with a true update of the game. I don't think I liked the landscape of
VC at all and have no urge to play it again sam.

VC certainly did nail down a decade (the 80's) better than all the other GTA
titles. Music, cars, colors, and the main island at night. Great theme. Even
the storyline wasn't bad. And who doesn't like Ray Liotta ?? But it's my
least favorite of the 4 modern GTA titles.
And probably for the same reason. The landscape was a bit smallish and
almost entirely flat. Yeah, i know Florida is flat, but thats why so many
old people live there. No surprises. ;)

Without looking online for a guide, i'm guessing that i've got around 15 or
so main missions to go before the end. I've been stretching out the
inevitable by piddling around, but i'm running out of meat n' potatoes stuff
to do other than chase down 190 birds and 15 stunt jumps. I don't bother
with 100% until the 2'nd playthrough.

Some of the side activity has been transfered to GTA4 by simply wandering
around the city and checking out everything. Lots of cool pocket parks,
peds, and other details everywhere. The simple joy of picking up a discarded
paper cup off the ground and throwing it at a cop to get that 1'st star
rolling.

And like something from a Stephen King book, i've been fixated on that evil
swingset the past few sessions. I've managed 1700ft so far, on the street in
front of Brucie's hideout. It seems to launch the Blista easiest, but i've
been using a bigger car to knock down the park benches down faster so i can
get the rear bumper lined up with that swingset pole better. My goal is a
little more west into the water.

I don't know, I hate those films :O) Michael Caine is a cockney
character though, where Myers character seems to be a toff, a snob
playboy.

Yer welcome, I've had it in my favourites for years, it's very funny
reading them when you know the meaning anyway.

When you find it, put the back bumper of your vehicle against the center post of the swing. You may
have to bump it a few times to piss it off before it'll do anything. Once it starts moving and kicking up
debris, it's ready to go. The swing on the north side (on the right if you're facing west) is less likely to
send you into the nearby apartment building, though it's unpredictable and hard to control regardless.
If you can avoid hitting the apartment building you could fly as far as the park or even farther.

In single player you have to back your car into it or Niko will get thrown through the windshield almost
every time, which can be entertaining though not necessarily what you want to happen. More than
once Niko wound up in the ocean six blocks away, but usually he just went splat against some nearby
building. In multi you apparently can't be thrown from your car so you can go nose-in if you want.

If you play with this long enough you'll get the "Rolled Over" achievement. I did this with an ice
cream van, and it came as a complete surprise.

If you park a car inside the swing (between the posts) it might get kicked a few feet but it might also
get bashed and twisted into shapes you wouldn't think possible in a videogame. One car I messed
with was so badly beaten up its wheels couldn't turn anymore because the fenders were pressing
against them. Another car I used came out looking like a banana!

Finally, watch out for the peds. They get angry when you drive up into the playground and might pull
you out of the car. Keep your trusty bat handy and hope the cops don't catch you giving them a
beatdown.

Anyway, that's pretty much all I know of the Swingset of Doom (also known as the Car Cannon.) Have
fun!

I've also been told if you park between the fence (to the north) and the swings you can get thrown half a
mile straight up, but I haven't gotten this to work yet...

I'll have to try that too. A couple times i've gone flying up at an angle
into that apartment building, then skipped straight up into the air a fair
distance. 1/2 the time Niko gets launched out of the car after hitting the
building, so any good air the car gets after that is a blown attempt.

I enjoy throwing a sleeping bag, tent, cookery, bike, and cooler in the car
and go camping in the woods for a couple days. After looking at that
dictionary, now i'm not so sure. ;)

Ifyou are curious Paul, i found the "English english clip on where else,
youtube. Skip to the 40 second mark if you want to cut as much Austin Powers
out of your diet as possible. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgPH0tYXJrA

Mike Meyers ain't no Adam Sandler, but i liked Goldmember. Everything else
he puts out is definitely not Scottish, so it's crap !!! (i used his own
material against him. cool...)

Yes, don't walk too close to the swings if you can avoid it. First time I explored them on foot
something happened and Niko was killed instantly. There are some powerful and dangerous forces at
work here. :)

I hope Rockstar doesn't fix it in a patch. Stuff like this helps make GTA great.

I was just getting Nico to climb out when the chuffing car went
berserk, spinning and twisting and flying and Nico was kind of half
out until finally he fell to the ground and the car slapped on top of
him. I could hear this noise so walked back over to the swing and he
got slapped right out of there. So I walks him back to this smoking
twisted wreck and drove it away :O))

Oh, thanks. Right, well, it's kind of real and kind of not. Some of it
is real cockney rhyming slang, they say stuff like

"apples and pears" for stairs

"trouble and strife" for wife

"jam jar" for car

etc etc.

Nowadays they're more likely to say

"'ere, I is well wicked, innit" :O)

I'm afraid the shat on a turtle thing went right over my head

True, but this is the first time they've had the ability to patch things
after the sale of the game, which they've already done at least once.
There are a few bugs I wish they'd fix (like invisible people at that cafe
on the second island) but they might also take it in their heads to fix
other stuff that I'd like to see kept as well, like the car cannon.
Bethesda put out patches for Oblivion after release, in the process killing
a few bugs that might have been fun (I came along after they were done with
releasing patches, so I never got to try them.) There's just no telling
what the developers will decide to do...

true. I have a small feeling they might be aware of this one though,
and if they see messages with people having fun and no damage being
done I doubt they'll close it.

I was wondering if i was going to get my rollover achievement from playing
around with the Swingset of Doom, and i finally did last night ! Thank god.
I wasn't having any luck at the airport. In the same flight i got closer to
my goal, bouncing off the warehouse across from Brucie's. Another 10ft of
height and i would have cleared it !
