Games of the century
5.Metal Gear Solid
In terms of story, replay value, appeal and overall well-roundedness,
probably the best game ever made.
4.DragonQuest/Dragon Warrior
Without this game there would be no FF. And no Lunar, Thousand Arms,
Xenogears, Grandia, or even Beyond the Beyond. And what would we do without
Beyond the Beyond.....
3.Super Mario Bros.
At least half the world gaming populations' first game, and one that you can
still waste hours on.
2.Pong
Duh
1.Pac-Man
Brilliant in it's simplicity, insanly difficult to master (only one person's
ever done it,and all it took him was playing it every day for twenty years.
So if you think you don't have a life, at least your not this guy.) and
endlessly entertaining, this is the game that proved video games were more
than a fad, they were a new medium. Plus it had it's own cereal.
honorable mentions: Final Fantasy, (for building on DQ's forumla with
parties, a story, and overall perfecting the RPG into what it is today)
Street Fighter II: The World Warrior,(the first modern fighting game) The
Legend of Zelda,(one of those games people will be stuck in fifty years
after we're all dead) Dragon's Lair (the first game with FMV....even if
that's all it was) Pokemon (for bringing RPG's intot he mainstream and
achiveing levels of popularity not seen since....well, since Pac-man.) and
this game I played at Chuck E. Cheese when I was five wich had this little
bear dressed as a wizard (because it has a little bear dressed as a wizard.
And he hops!)
Games of the decade:
5.Final Fantasy VIII
The best 32-bit RPG yet made. At least I think so.
4.Super Mario Bros. 3
The best platformer ever made and the best selling game ever, too.
3.Street Figher II
How good is this game? They remade it 47 times and people still bought it.
How influencial is this game? Go count it's clones.
2.Metal Gear Solid
The game that strove to tell a shocked nation that a nuclear war would be
bad.
1. APE ESCAPE!
.......
You guys are so gullible. No, actually it's-
1.Chrono Trigger
Square's finest hour and the best Console RPG in the history of my pants.
Games of the year (1999)
5.Lunar:Silver Star Story
The only RPG I played this year where I never found myself running from
enemies out of sheer boredom at fighting them.
4.Street Fighter Alpha 3
Ryu is still your master. SHIN SHORYUKEN!
3.Thousand Arms
Dating, my ass! I'm playing this game for lines like "My mom keeps talking
about 'biagra' " and "Why doesen't my line have a voiceover? What? I'm just
an extra? This sucks!"
2.Metal Gear Solid:VR Missions
Q:Define "fun"
A:Shooting at wave after wave of helpless guards with your surface-to-air
missles, and seeing how many you can kill in one minute.
I understand there's some other stuff you can do in this game, too.
1.Ape Escape
Yeah,right. Anyway, it's.....
1.Final Fantasy VIII
I'm sorry, folks, but I still found myself having more fun with this game
than any other I played last year. I guess I'm just not hardcore.
Honorable mentions:Pokemon Yellow, Legacy of Kain:Soul Reaver
While I'm at it, let's just do the second annual Wyvern awards now.
BEST GAME MOMENT:
Luna's Boat Song
runner-up:FFVIII-the ending.
BEST MALE LEAD
Ape Escape....uh, I mean, Squall Leonhart (FFVIII)
runner up:Meis Triumph (Thousand Arms)
BEST FEMALE LEAD
Luna (Lunar)
runner up:Rinoa Heartilly (FFVIII)
BEST MALE SUPPORTING CHARECTER (playable)
ZELL DINCHT (FFVIII)
runnerup: Muza (Thousand Arms)
Best FEMALE SUPPORTING CHARECTER (playable)
WYNA GRAPPLE (Thousand Arms)
runnerup:Selphie Tilmett (FFVIII)
BEST NON PLAYABLE SUPPORTING CHARECTER:
NALL (Lunar)
runnerup:THE ELDER (Soul Reaver)
BEST VOICE-OVER
LEGACY OF KAIN:SOUL REAVER
runnerup:Lunar
BEST VILLAIN
GHALEON (Lunar)
runnerup:TEAM ROCKET (Pokemon Yellow)
WORST VILLIAN:
Ultimecia (FFVIII)
BEST MINIGAME
TIE:TRIPLE TRAID (FFVIII)/DATING (Thousand Arms)
BEST STORY
FINAL FANTASY VIII
runnerup:I dunno. Lunar and Thousand Arms' plots were both cliched but
well-written, none of the other game's plots were good enough, so I'll go
back to the source of the cliches and give the runner up to Final Fantasy V.
MOST OVERRATED:
STAR OCEAN:THE SECOND STORY
Maybe if this game had a functioning battle system and voice actors who
don't sound like they have downs syndrome, I might want to play it.
BEST BATTLE SYSTEM:
Final Fantasy V
runnerup:Final Fantasy VIII
(SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT)
BEST PLOT TWIST (FFVIII spoilers)
Edea gets her powers from Ultimecia.
STUPIDEST PLOT TWIST (FFVIII spoilers)
"Oh, but we all used to live at the same orphanage but then we forgot!"
Um....that's it. I could put something funny here, but maybe I dont want to
be your clown anymore! Maybe I want to run free and live with my people, the
proud walrus tribe, without the white man looking at me and pointing and
laughing! To hell with all of you! *poisons your water supply*

>Games of the century
Assuming video games only....
5. The Legend of Zelda
Although it may not be an RPG in the strict sense of the word,
for many gamers it was the first game that involved more than hopping
on turtles. Still remarkable in its depth.
4. Space Wars
Never heard of it? Doesn't surprise me. But it was the first
video game ever, and for that alone, it deserves mention.
3. Pong
The first home video game, and to this day the only video game
my father will play <shrugs>
2. Pac-Man
Video gaming's first superstar. Despite some half-hearted
attempts to revive the franchise in the 90's, the original is still
the one everyone remembers.
1. Super Mario Bros.
Surpassing Pac-Man is renown and longevity, the brothers Mario
became arguably the first cultural icon to arrive out of video games.
Even fifteen years later, the name "Mario" is still synonimous in most
people's minds to "video games".
>Games of the decade:
5. Final Fantasy VII
The game that made role playing games cool. While I may not
enjoy it as much as its sequel, it deserves mention for what it did
for the market alone.
4. Street Fighter II
Almost ten years later, with innumerable sequels/clones under
its belt, it almost single-handedly created a genre.
3. Metal Gear Solid
One of the first significant gaming fads that didn't
automatically conjure up images of spotty preteen boys. An intelligent
and engrossing experience.
2. Tomb Raider
Here's the pitch: an intelligent, involving modernization of
the old Pitfall concept, but with a main character who is sure to
appeal to the market gaming needs least: sad, forty year-old single
men. A+ on execution, C- on marketing.
1. Pokemon
Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Pokemon, by any means. But
there are so many other games I wanted to put here: Castlevania:
Symphony of the Night, Lunar, Final Fantasy Tactics, Harvest Moon,
etc. But, when it comes down to it, Pokemon is inescapable. Its the
Godzilla of marketing fads. Even if I regard the games with marginal
interest, I have to admire the hype around it... or fear it, take your
pick.
Dishonorable mention goes to Mortal Kombat, for proving you don't need
quality standards to make fad, and Night Trap, for opening a Pandora's
box of puritanical censorship concerns on the entire gaming industry,
while simeltaneously being a ridiculously bad game.
>Games of the year (1999)
5. Star Ocean: The Second Story
OK, so it had some serious flaws, from atrocious voice acting,
a nonexistant storyline, and some overcomplicated menu commands, but
it deserves note for its sheer inventiveness alone.
4. Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete
For setting a new standard in "collector's edition" packaging
and just generally being an exciting and involving game.
3. Silent Hill
Bad voice acting aside, the scariest, most atmospheric video
game I've ever played, and probably the best non-RPG I've played in
years.
2. Final Fantasy VIII
A complex and engrossing game engine, beautiful graphics...
not so great story, but otherwise a memorable experience.
1. Grandia
A fun little excursion, perhaps a tad lightweight, but
enjoyable all the way through.

Why isn't Contra on this List? Or Starcraft? Or Doom? I mean Doom

Contra, well it's just cool.

Ooh, almost forgot about that one. Choices, choices....

To be fair, the Wyvies really only refer to games released the
previous year ('99... Xenogears was released in '98). As for the games
of the decade / century list, well, I can't claim to speak for anyone
else, but Xenogears would easily get my award for most overrated video
game of the decade if not for Mortal Kombat. Uninspired, repetitive
combat, hideous scripting, a rather dull main character, and text that
crawls by at the speed of an invalid sloth. An RPG should not actively
make me want to avoid townspeople and extras at all costs.
On the other hand, and not to be too negative, it had Elly, who,
despite the game's multitude of flaws, is still probably the best
female RPG lead to date.

Urk. One of the most annoying experiences I've ever had to plod
through in an RPG. Totally out of place and quite tedious.

Ugh... I know what you're talking about in that last sentence. To be fair,
Xenogears had a REALLY COOL story, whose delivery was totally flawed (IMO).

Good taste, Acey.
<massive snip>
I was looking through all these lists for just one thing ... what happened
to Xenogears??? You all haven't played it or something?
Best RPG ever in my opinion... I mean, you can't beat Fei. He's the man!!!
^_^
And nearly all of those 'Best something somethings" could have gone to
Xenogears. For eg.
BEST GAME MOMENT:
Xenogears. But too bad I can't say anything or it would spoil the plot.
BEST MALE LEAD:
Fei Fon Wong (Xenogears). Let's just say that he absolutely sh*ts on Squall
Lionheart...
BEST FEMALE LEAD
Elly (Xenogears). Besides, those little noises she makes when you do her
combos are so cute =P
BEST MALE SUPPORTING CHARECTER (playable)
Citan (Xenogears). Especially when he gets his sword. Damn!
Best FEMALE SUPPORTING CHARECTER (playable)
Emeralda (Xenogears). And there are two versions of her too ^_^
BEST NON PLAYABLE SUPPORTING CHARECTER:
Ummmm. It's been a while. Anyone else who played Xenogears wanna lend a
hand? ^_^
BEST VILLAIN
Id (Xenogears). Well, he counts doesn't he??? Also those elements who
combined their gears like transformers get honorable mentions too.
WORST VILLIAN:
Ramsus (Xenogears). I actually felt sorry for this guy. But Fei is too damn
good I admit.
BEST MINIGAME:
Stuff that annoying Triple Triad, it would have to be battle arena
(Xenogears). Steet Fighter-esque fun ^_^
BEST STORY:
Definitely XENOGEARS!!!
BEST BATTLE SYSTEM:
Xenogears combo system takes the cake. The Gear fighting was awesome too.
BEST PLOT TWIST:
Pick and choose from (you guessed it), Xenogears. But since I'm such a nice
guy, I'm not even going to print spoilers at all just so you won't get
tempted.
And now we come to *drum roll* BEST GAME EVER .... which goes to .... Last
Action Hero on SNES!!! Nah, just kidding. If you don't know by now what game
I'd pick, you mustn't have been reading...
(Just another of Xenogear's insane fans)

Alright. There are a couple good ones, but nothing fantastic.

Squall

Why? "Best" doesn't mean "who is the coolest" Squall was waaay more
developped than Fei. Fei seemed to me a kind of flat character...

She was a good character, but basing that on "cute noises" takes a little
away from your credibility... I do think Elly was better than Rinoa, but
nowhere close to Luna.
> BEST MALE SUPPORTING CHARECTER (playable)

Yes, Citan was a good character. Laguna is the only other I can think of
that would be better.

Woooo, two versions. :P I don't even think she *did* anything.

Ramsus was actually a really good villain. Well developped, good character.

Triple Triad was involving. When I started to play, I didn't seem to be
able to stop for a while :) The fighting mini-game... I played it when I
had to, went back one more time because I could, then avoided it afterwards
when it became more boring than the storytelling on disc 2.
> BEST STORY:

Very very good story. Not as good as Final Fantasy Tactics (which I don't
think is a part of this, being too old), but good.
> BEST BATTLE SYSTEM:
>
> Xenogears combo system takes the cake. The Gear fighting was awesome too.
The Xenogears combo system only takes the cake is the cake is made out of
shit. The combo system offered the illusion of having options in battle,
when really all you did was store up, big combo. Gears was the same. Weak
attack, big combo. Magic and special abilities were useless. I don't think
I ever used the Jesse Canon, just because it was worse than a simple combo
move.

There's some debate over wich came first, actually. A primative home versian

about that for a second......a primative versian of pong. It's like primal
ooze or something.) See last month's EGM where the interview the inventor of

Methinks he coulden't have gotten there first without that yellow dot thing.
Plus, Paccy is still better known than Mario; (debatable) more
people-on-the-street seem to recognize him.....like Mickey Mouse,he is a
very distnct and unmistakeable charecter, whereas Mario, while also distinct,
is probably less recognizeable, especially with Luigi confusing everyone.
Mario's games are certianly more popular than Pac-man's but 1)Pac-man
himself is still a bigger star than the plumber, who now has to share his
near-icon status with Sonic, and to some extent, Pikachu......Pac-man is one
rung higher, a full-fledged gaming icon. and 2) Mario keeps making sequels
to stay popular. Pac-man doesen't need to. His one game is good enough that
people still play it and still love him for it. Of course, the same can be
said of Mario, but he probably woulden't be what he is today without his
sequels. All Pac-man needed was one game. (yes, Paccy had sequels too, but
except for Ms.Pac-man, none have even come remotly close to touching the
original in terms of popularity and replayability.) Pac-man is in many ways
the perfect video game, though a case can be made for Tetris.

This piece of crap? Please. Lara is just another mascot......the only
difference being Sonic and Mario don't have tits. TR sucks anyway......the
concept has alot of potential (Soul Reaver) but as it is, it's just boring
wandering around wondering why the hell you're playing this. TR 4 is
remarkably similar to TR 1........while they tweaked the gameplay a bit,
it's really more like the Megaman games......change the levels, add one or
two minor improvements and blammo! A sequel! Lara is ALLl marketing.

Harvest Moon? Okay, if you say so. Still, Pokemon's impact on the gaming
world cannot be underestimated. Five years from now, all those little kids
who grew up with this craze will still be playing RPG's. If even half of
them keep playing them, in fact, they'll quickly be the biggest genre out
there. That woulden't suck too much.

Inventivness? Like the 80 different endings thing? That would rule if you
didnt have to endure the awful game to get to the endings. It's like
enduring the chinese water torture over and over because they give a

I'm sure I would have put this somewhere but I never got to play it. It was
either Grandia or Thousand Arms, and after FFVIII I fancied something with a
good translation. I actually played through 8 of RPG's this year (and played
several others without beating them) , but two don't count because they
didn't come out this year (FFVI and FFVII) even though I was playing VII for
the first time. I counted FFV as coming out this year since it's never been

For my money Laguna was FFVIII's second male lead. (it sure as hell waen't

inconsistant;he is scared to shoot Edea at the end of disc one, but his

>Is this your real opinion? So much for personal ideals of quality

Yep. My real opinion is that Pokemon has had a profound impact on the
gaming industry, and the public's perception thereof. I may not be
enamored with the game, but enough people are to make it important.
I take a Time Magazine approach to these "so-and-so of the year"
things: I don't have to like something to rank it highly, I just need
to recognize it as having had a significant impact. Thus, a game
consisting solely of a close-up of Wayne Knight's bellybutton would
have gotten mention if it had had anywhere near the impact on the
public as Pokemon had.
If you wanna debate the gameplay or whatnot of the Pokemon behemoth,
that's a whole 'nother topic entirely. My opinions on quality are
seperate from my opinions on impact.
Actually, Wolfenstien 3D created FPS games, Doom just perfected them (like
Dragonquest and FF1) I forgot to mention them because I don't really like
FPS games that much, although I am enjoying Medal of Honor....... Starcraft
is not a console game so it doesen't count. I don't have the hardware to
play computer games or the patience to keep updating my machine to play the
latest fad. Fuck it. That's why consoles have network play now. To render
such things needless. For my money, the best stradegy game ever is the
Saturn epic, Dragonforce. You should all buy Saturns just to play Working
Desgins best game (you heard me) ever. Hell, the whole package will probably
run you under fifty bucks....I bought them both when they were new.

Alpha kicks ass. Street Fighter 3 looks absolutly phenomanal, but plays
so-so (and it's so slow)
Incidentally, SF3 is a classic case of waiting too damn long. Had it come
out a year or two after SF2 it would have been the biggest most sucsessful
game ever. Instead, we got four new versians of SF2, then the Alpha games,
then X-men Vs. Street Fighter wich spun off into it's own series (wich
rules, though it's no place for technique) then Darkstalkers, then FINALLY
SF3, by wich time people had two attitudes towards it....either they didn't
give a fuck anymore, or they expected that after all this time, it would be
the greatest, most revalutinary fighter ever. Unfortunatly, it just barrowed
it's new features from the Alpha games (wich are better anyway....Alpha 3 is
the best 2D fighter ever made) and limited you to one Super Art for the
entire game, the new charecters were mostly rejects, and there was only one
boss, who was one of the stupidest charecter desgins ever. Had it debuted
with all these features in place of Super Street Fighter, Capcom would still
be making money off it and the critics would have hailed it as the second
coming. Instead, what could have been the biggest game of all time is just
another fighter, wich people only played cause of it's name. For shame.
BTW, Felicia and Lilith from Darkstalkers are godesses. Ladies, if somehow
you ever become real, I'll be your sex slave. Really. Leareth is okay with
this. Not that I've asked, but I'm going to hope she is.

Yes, in Lunar, only Nash was troubled, and Mia was depressed, but only cause
she got stuck with Nash. I mean, he is so fucking worthless, especially
considering the shit he pulls right before you go to the Frontier. After
that little fiasco, you wonder why you didn't just kill him when you had the

Oh,nyah. I found myself identifying with Squall better than any RPG

duh to a painful past. His plight is totally beliveable, and he seems more
human due to his imperfections and the way he overcomes them. As for the

I like this girl!" Meis was like "Let's save the world, but only cause it'll

Ghaleon was cool cause, again, he was a flawed human being (well,a flawed
elf anyway) who was never truly evil, he just was a bit of an elitiest who
belived that the common man needs a ruler to look to for guidanc, whereas
Alex and co were more like Marxists, who wanted to put production in the
hands of the workers (so to speak) and create a world where everybody had
value because they had to take care of themselves.
meanwhile, Ultimecia was all like "I'm evil and I'm gonna compress time and
that's all you'll ever know about me!" and Kain was all like "Me and my deep
voice want to continue our little orgy of self-destruction for no good
reason. Also, I'm really petty so I'm gonna kill you cause your penis is

Oh, come on, Jessie James, Meowth, that's right! What's not to like? They're
bad, but they're more harmless loveable rouges than true villains. Sure,
they want to conquer the world, but they seem to be dedicated to the idea
that they can do it without killing or even seriously injuring anyone. Of
course, thier boss Giovanni is a bit less altruistic, but despite the way
they pride themselves on being so bad, they're really not unless they
absoutly have to be. Usually, they're just funny and a bit pitiful.
Especially in the game, where they always throw the same three weak-ass
Pokemon at you.

OK. I thought by "Game of the Decade" you meant, "Best Game of the
Decade," not "Most Influential Game of the Decade."
I still don't think I'd give the influential award to Pokemon.
Probably the original Super Mario Brothers. That little plumber
revitalized the home gaming industry, was enjoyable to adults and
kids, and generally didn't suffer from the restricted age group and
backlash fever which are symptomatic of fads.
In short, Mario will be hoppin' when Pikachu zaps his last gasp.

runner-up: the ur-quan.
for that matter, i also designate third place to the ur-quan, fourth
place to the ur-quan, and fifth through nine hundredth place to the
ur-quan.
god, those things were *awesome*. why can't we have more villians
like them instead of these damn insane rodeo clowns and trees and
crap? Is the entire concept of -empathizing- with the villain
completely out the window in this day and age? I mean, hell, not even
Xenogears could pull off a villain near as good as them, and it was
pretty much perfect in almost every other plot aspect. Sephiroth
*almost* had the empathy thing down pat, but he was also a fucking
nutcase, so that pretty much shot down any chance I had of empathizing
with him.
oh well.

Everything except magic was useless, especially as it is much easier to

Yeah, I think it was the whole dinosaur theme in Mario World, and that it
didn't have 50 different power ups like Mario 3 did. Heck, even if the
Tanuki suit and the Raccoon suit were essentialy identical, it was still
better to have both.

I dunno. For long term impact, you might have a case for both Doom
(might never have reached Pokemon's level of success, but it spawned
more imitators than any other game of the decade) or Street Fighter II
(ditto). But its difficult to say, since both of those have had a
great deal longer than Pokemon to change the face of gaming.

Alright I'll Save the long descriptions.
5. Metal Gear Solid
4. Mike Tyson's Punchout
3. Final Fantasy VIII
2. Half-life
1. Super Mario Bros 1
> Games of the decade:
5. Chrono Trigger
Best SNES Game, And one of Squares best RPGs. Endearing characters that
you just love to death, a neat story and Some of the best music in a
game outside of final fantasy
4. Kirby's Adventure
The best NES Game and best platformer. It's cuteness, originality, and
it's ability to grab you by the neck, and say "MASTER ME, BITCH!" makes
it very fun. If you're just sitting at home, then try and beat this game
as fast as possible. And I just LOVE sitting around, and listing to the
music on Nosefart for DOS and turning different insturments on and off,
wallowing in the near perfect melodies.
3. Final Fantasy VIII
Best RPG, Period. Although FFVII was the most infuental console RPG, And
DQ was the first "real" console rpg, we aren't making a "most infuencial
list", and FFVIII is the best. Best story, best battle system, best
characters, best visuals, and best execution.
2. Metal Gear Solid
I just ove this game. I've won this game almost as much as Kirby. Always
finding fun things to do. I was Barrowing my friends copy, then Best buy
sold it for $39 w/ VR Missions. So I bought it and it was one of the
best gaming moments ever. Plus, Jonny Sizaki is the video game character
you feel sorry for most.
1. Half-life
Half-life + TFC + Counterstrike + Opposing Forces + Gamespy = Orgasm O_O
> Games of the year (1999)
5. MGS: VR Missions
Such a fun puzzle/strategy/action game. Still one of the games I play
the most. Endless fun, and endless replay value.
4. Mario Golf
Rent this, Call over three friends, and have a sleepover with this game
on. Best multiplayer game since Goldeneye. Easy to learn, and funn as
hell to win. The taunts are perfect too, because actual verbal taunts
just don't seem to work.
3. Ape Escape
Don't know what Wyv was implying, but this is one hell of a fun game.
Straight from the opening cinema, with its cute characters and
impossibly wonderful music. The seeming complexity of the contolls is
actually easy to master, with in game training sessions. This is Mario
with a better story(beautifully cliched), better graphics(ARRG! TO
CUTE!), and more fun; And Zelda on crack, with a more rewarding feeling
after beating a level.
2. Starseige: Tribes
Cannot explain. The most user-friendly multiplayer game ever. With
enless fun and customization.
1. Final Fantasy 8
Huh? Read Wyvern's explaination.
Honorable Games: Guardian Heros, Final Fantasy 1, 3-7, Megaman games,
Zelda games, Tetris, Pac-man, Outrun, Street Fighter games, NFL Blitz,
Super Mario 2-3, SM64, SMRPG, SMW1, SMW2: Yoshi's Island, FF Tactics,
Vanal Hearts, Bubble Bobble, Twisted Metal 2, Metroid Games, SNK
Fighters, Doom, Duke Nukem 3d, X-com 1, Daggerfall, Homeword, Soul
Calibre, The Sierra "Quest" Games: Kings, Space, police, For Glory,
Leisure Suit Larry, SWAT3, Bushido Blade, Gran Turismo, Pokemon,
Xenogears, Grim Fandango, Warcraft 2, Gunstar Heroes, Strider, Sonic
games, Streets of Rage games, Shinobi 3, Ecco the dolphin, Metal Gear 1,
Castlevania games. There's more, but I'm tired.

In Latin and just about every Latin-derived language, feminine names end
with an "a." And that includes inanimate objects, too; "it" is not used to
describe proper objects in Latin, so "him" and "her" are used instead.
That's why Marius, Mario, and Maria are basically the same name applied to
different genders...

Actually, AFAIK this game took second place by a large margin to the first
SMB in terms of sales.

And Pokemon hasn't really changed the face of it, anyway... if it had,
all the little knock-offs would be as equally popular or dominant as
Pokemon itself. Instead Pokemon far outsells all other 'clone' games,
very unlike the old FPS days. Strong evidence Pokemon is more
marketing wizardry than a shift in gaming.

O_o I hope it was the one from FF4..
NZ|;P~ In Latin and just about every Latin-derived language, feminine names end

Hmmm, interesting, I didn't know that. The name "Rena" is also a Japanese
name, there is a young Japanese actress called Rena Tanaka. I'm not sure
if the name was borrowed from English though. (very likely)

Is that including the "sales" of the game packaged with the NES
console itself? If so, it seems like the results would be slightly
skewed, since a lot of people weren't so much buying the game as
buying the console and getting the game.
