Ugh, and Lansing still has brainwashed a select few...

Y'know, I signed the damn thing. It's not just the Aeris
thing. I've said it before; I don't give a damn if she dies or not.
But the other little annoyances; no Vincent or Yuffie in the ending,
the rather abrubt ending in any case; I think that there's something
there that can be fixed. Of course it won't work; but maybe at least
Square will fix the problems that I think we all can agree are there.
Nothing's perfect; but if they're going to take a shot at it, it'd be
nice to see those problems addressed.

Still with me? Okay.
First of all, way back when, a many months ago, I too was one of those who
were duped by Lansing. Then I learned the truth. You can't really complain
about it until you actually see the FMV, in the context of the game, for
yourself.
I knew it was going to be a great FMV, but I didn't expect it to be that
touching. First you see Cloud, then Aeris praying, then Sephiroth
descending like an angel only to skewer Aeris right in the middle of her
prayer. That shocked expression on Aeris' face is worth a million words.
The most effective part, in my opinion, is the one of her mother's materia
bouncing off all the crystals and falling into the water. It seems to
symbolically represent the earth, and as we know, there seems to be little
hope for the world after Aeris is gone. Or maybe I'm reading too much into
it. Anyway, I had a few other people watching me at the time, and we all
agreed it was a beautiful, very moving sequence.
Now...what would happen if Aeris were revivable?
For one thing, it would take a heck of a lot out of her death and burial
FMVs. As Aeris sank into the water, I felt a bit sad (I felt dumb for
feeling so, but it couldn't be helped) that we'd never see her again, and
she's a video game character for crying out loud! If we're attached to her
that much, the creators definitely did a good job. It would destroy a lot
of those feelings if Aeris came back, for her death is one of the themes
that "makes the game."

Well, has my two cents, and first post here. I agree whole heartly
that it would take away from her death's significance if she were to
come back but I disagree with your "she's a video game character for
crying out loud!" line. If you take FFVII in like you might take in a
novel or several book series, then the big display of emotion here is
a little easier to justify. When some people read books they become
the main character. Suffering with the characters through the bad, and
rejoicing through the good should be familar concepts to at least ONE
book in your past. If not, I suggest you visit the library. FFVII, I
think (IMHO), falls into this literary catergory (a bad or good work
is already being actively debated here) more so because the player is
in direct control over the main character's actions. Enchancing the
overall effect, hence the RP in RPG - Role Playing. Role as in acting.
So your in this world now, weight of the universe on you shoulders,
you and your companions going through hell with monsters/struggling to
solve mysteries/developing everyone's skills/ etc, etc, etc. NOW, one
of your party dies...Reason to get upset. I'd say yes. End of the
world? Definitely not. I guess it all depends on how deep you let
yourself get drawn into the game.
