Hi All,

I have a fourth-level druid (my first and currently only EQ character)
on The Nameless server. He chose to undertake the "deliver this mail
to Highpass" quest from Queynos. I've attempted it three times so far,
with the same nearly identical results each time: somewhere in the
Northern Plains of Karana a lion/lioness comes out of nowhere and
kills me (usually near a gypsy-type encampment). I'm on the lookout
for animals, but never see the lion coming; it just pops out over the
gypsy tents, or drops/spawns out of the sky in front of me.

I never have time to cast a "Lull Animal" and run away, and attacking
it is out of the question (and pointless to boot; it kills me in
two/three quick swipes). I was under the impression that druids would
not be harmed by animals so long as the druid did nothing to harm said
beast, but these attacks are totally unprovoked.

Any thoughts, comment, or suggestions are welcome.

On a different note: how can I capture a screen shot in EQ?

Many Thanks In Advance,

John

First off, welcome. I remember the first time I tried crossing the karanas,
it seemed so huge and now, it is just tedium.

In North Karana, instead of following the path, follow the river East. Keep
an eye out for a camp of raiders, they will kill you, but can be easily
avoided. You will reach a Wooden Chain bridge. Cross that and you shall find
East Karanas.

ALSO as a druid, if you have any camouflage or invis (which you probably get
at 5th), or Spirit of the wolf spells (9th lvl or 14th), they will help you
a lot.

Good luck and safe travels

Wait until level 5 when you get camo. You can walk right up, moon the cat,
then move on unharmed. I have a level 10 Druid and get attacked by cats all
the time.

Lions do not suffer from the same restriction that bears and wolves do.
You'll get camouflage at level 5, so that might be a better time to attempt
this quest.

I remember being shocked by that too. "Why are they attacking me? I'm a
druid!" I don't know why, but right from the start of my career certain
bears would glower dubiously and others would view me amiably. Plains cats
in the Commonlands would be amiable, but lions in the Karanas would be
glaring. I've never figured it out. Now however, all bears view me warmly;
but those darn lions still glare.

My main suggestion is that you stick to the river when crossing West and
North Karanas. Turn right when entering West Karana from Qeynos hills and
run down to the river. Stay close to the water all the way to North K and
continue on the river bank past the stone bridge until you come near the
"corner" where the river bends to the northward. Watch out! There is a
raider camp at this corner, so cut up the hill and go across country but
get back to the northbound river as quickly as you can. Again follow the
river bank, this time northwards until you come to the wooden bridge that
crosses into East Karana. After crossing, the safest way to get to HPH is
to turn left here and follow the river bank northwards again. After a bit
you will usually see a cyclops named Broon standing in the river ahead of
you. (Best do this in daylight!) Avoid coming too close to Broon. (heheh)
You will pass a druid ring and find the north wall of the zone. Climb up
on the hillside and turn east, (right). Stay as high as you can up there
until you start coming down into a broad flat area. Thia is the gorge to
Beholder, now on your left. Run down the gorge a little to be safe and then
cross over to east side. Again follow the hill on the north side of the
zone, pass the small village (friendly merchants) and follow the zone wall
as it bends around to the south. You are now on the east wall of the zone.
Continue on staying high on this wall until you come to another gorge.
Climb down after looking around carefully. Lots of lions around here.
On the south side of this gorge you will see a wide path leading up the side
of the mountain. This is the road to Highpass Hold. It's a long road up
the into the mountains, but after you get up away from the plains you won't
meet any more lions, (or anything else). There is a gnoll spawn site just
inside the western entrance to Highhold, so make this trip when the server
is crowded. If players are camping this spot there shouldn't be any gnolls
alive to bother you.

PS: you might want to wait until you can use the level 5 spell - Camouflage
before making this trip. Invisibility won't protect you from giants, cyclops
or griffons, but the lions and other lower level stuff won't see you.
Good luck!

To capture a screenshot, press the minus key on your keypad.

As for the lions, buy the spell panic animal. While you're running through
the Karanas, press the F9 key a few times to get a 3rd person view of your
character. Click and hold the right mouse button and swing the camera angle
all the way out and watch for lions. If a lion comes up to you and attacks
you, use panic animal (unless its resisted).

An easier way to get to Highpass from Qeynos is to follow the shoreline from
West Karana into North Karana. East Karana is going to be a problem tho.

Well worth the effort. Now they need an animation for it.

"same restriction"??

some cats KOS Druids, some Wolfs and Bears KOS druids.. then there is
Cats/Wolves/Bears that are friendly to Druids..

Pumas will not attack, but Lions will.
Mist Wolves will not attack, but them gorge hounds in East Karana will
(among other dog/wolf types).
Some Kodiaks attack, but brown bears do not..

Some animals like Druids, some dont.

I've never actually used the lull animal spell (so I could be wrong), but if
it works like the other lull spells, it will do no good to cast it after you
already have the beasties attention. You have to cast before the MOB
notices you, then you have a few seconds of reduced (possibly 0) agro range.
In these situations, you'd be better off using snare, but that will probably
fail if the beastie is red to you.

Wait a few levels. You think the lions are bad in NK, wait until you run
into one of the many flavors of griffs. And if you survive that, Highpass
itself can be instant death to someone up to low teens if they are unlucky
and the gnolls are uncamped (or get trained to zone). Level 4 is way to low
to be attempting this quest.

I concur.
Hightail your little druid self back to Qeynos. Hunt there until you
get to Level 5. Then, go get your spells at the Guild in Surefall
Glade. You'll get "camouflage" at 5; which allows you walk unmolested
past all sorts of mean critters.

Make sure to put your training points into your magic skills, too.
Otherwise you'll fizzle instead of sizzle - which means you'll still
become Lion's Delight.

Yes, use Camo at five AND don't follow the path, follow the river
bank instead, much safer. You will REALLY want camo to get through
East Karana as well, I still hate going through there at lvl 20.
Though I've never actually died there on my many trips through,
there is much nasty stuff, Cyclopses, Reavers, Droon, some gnolls
and plenty of high level critters and you have little choice other
than to follow the path.

Plus, there are Gnolls in the HH entrance from EK and Orcs on
the other side to Kithicor. It's a bit of a maze there and if
they are not camped you will be very dead.

Happy trails...
