assuming Nintendo is somehow involved in this.

Nintendo needs to acquire Enix-Square immediately or at least buy a
controlling interest... to make up for the loss of Rare ^__^

This sounds pretty awesome and I was in shock when I first heard the news
but then I got to thinking. What does that really do for us the gamers?
Maybe it was a dream of mine or something but I could have swore that Square
and EA joined forces. Did that ever happen or am I out of my mind? If that
did happen, it hasn't showed. It hasn't effected any games that I know of.
So this teaming up thing could just be for financial reasons we don't know
about but we'll see how it turns out.

Square and EA teamed up to help Square publish some of Japanese games in
America... That's all... They didn't make any games together or anything
like that...
Now, this Enix and Square thing is totally different. They are merging into
one company and they (or it) will make games as one company...
Personally, I think Square is getting punished for sidestepping from a good
old RPG making formula... all those inclusion of CGs, coming up with weird
battle systems, etc., What's up with Final Fantasy X-2? Have you looked how
Yuna and Riku are dressed in that game? They look like characters from Dead
Or Alive or Tomb Raider... totally not RPG characters... it's a very cheap
way to copy and use every last bit of fame of a game that's already been
published years ago (FF X)...
Square's RPGs these days aren't what RPG we used to know at SNES days...

If this new combined company is going to dedicate itself mainly to one
console/company, that console/company = teh winner in Japan, no
questions asked.

Unless it's X-Box - that thing couldn't win in Japan with all the
Final Dragon Fantasy Quest games in the world.

Nintendo doesn't buy game companies. And why would they sell a controlling
interest to ANYONE? They're in a position to exploit this whole deal themselves.

Except for Sony, who already has an investment in Square last I heard.

Twenty percent, which is going down to 8.4 percent when the merger is complete.

In article <r187uuk13if8m1ftn...@4ax.com>,

You know...Dragon Quest alone would probably be able to turn things
around for MS in Japan. Not only would it attract gamers, but it would
also be a huge show of confidence by Enix, which would probably sway
other companies. It wouldn't be able to beat out thwe PS2, but it would
certainly geet them far above their current pathetic sales.

It's actually a very logical time to complete the merger. It /began/ today and
will be done April 1st. The Fiscal Year ends on March 31st. Thus, Enix Square
will be open for business on the first day of the next fiscal year.

Highly unlikely if the point of the merger was to actually make money (which
they claim it was). It would be stupid /not/ to put the game on at least the
PS2.

Agreed. Unless, of course, they are confident they can make the GC
number one based solely on Dragon Quest. Which is not outside the
realm of possibility. Plus, it's a safe bet that huge chunks of
change will be offered to Enix Square on behalf of all the console
manufacturers to get DQ8 exclusively. Microsoft can afford to offer
more than anyone else, but the question is: will they?

Microsoft can't just buy a company on a whim, otherwise it would be a hostile
takeover. It would have to be agreed upon by all parties involved, and since
the Xbox isn't exactly the most popular in Japan, I doubt either Square or Enix
would consider such a buy-out.

This thread is still alive? That's odd.

That's the sound of Nintendo with their tail firmly between their legs,
licking their wounds.

Then Microsoft must've really been hurting when they announced Xbox 2, seeing as
they also had to downgrade their sales expectations and had to report they
weren't going to make a profit till god knows when.

No.

They aren't, as far as anyone knows. Sony is involved, in a limited
way, due to their stake in Square. But basicvally, this is a merger
that the two companies decided on independeant of any outside companies.

"The announcement followed a press conference in which Iwata reported
that GameCube sales for the past year had fallen over ten percent
short of their projected ten million units. Further, that software
sales would 'fall short' of the company's 55 million unit goal,
although he would not give numbers."

That's what happens when almost all of your games aren't worth buying
the system for. Look at what happened to the Dreamcast, or the N64
for that matter.

"Although Nintendo is hanging onto the number two spot worldwide, this
is entirely thanks to a strong second place share of Japan -- GameCube
is running in third place behind Xbox in both the U.S. and now Europe.
In fact, Xbox had its strongest sales ever in the U.S. this December,
up 43% over the previous high-water mark when the console launched in
November, 2001, and seeing an 80% increase in software sales -- the
same period, need we point out, during which Nintendo admits to
falling short. Indeed, Iwata's failure to make any mention of Xbox
during the interview is curious, to say the least."

Not really. I'll be surprised if I ever see a Japanese businessman
admit that he's losing to a stupid American.

In all fairness, Sony annouced their next console also. Hell,
they already copy righted the fucking name and logo for it.

HELLO ALL,

I AM FROM 10 YEARS IN THE FUTURE. THIS MERGER HAS BEEN THE WORST THING TO HAPPEN TO JRPG'S IN THE HISTORY OF VIDEO GAMES. THIS NEW COMPANY NEVER PRODUCED ANOTHER GOOD GAME, IN FACT THEY MADE A SUPER SHITTY GAME, FINAL FANTASY 13, THAT LITERALLY AUTOBATTLES THE GAME FOR YOU.... AND THIS GAME GOT TWO (2) SEQUELS.

THE FUTURE IS DARK.

THAT IS ALL
