Hi,

I'm getting the hang of my sneaky archer, getting good enough at
lockpicking and persuading. I've been in some caves and done a few
random quests, and I'm currently getting all my recommendations to the
Arcane University and walking the roads between all the towns.

What I have yet to work on is Alchemy. I have a novice mortar and
pestle, and have made a few random potions. I've been harvesting
everything I find along the roads. But I'm not quite sure how to
proceed. Basically I pick something and put it in the M and P and see
what else I can add. Then I create whatever it happens to be.

In the end I want to make some poisons and healing potions mainly.
Are there recipe books? Or do I have to look at the properties of
these endless ingredients and figure it all out myself?

I know training and making potions will raise my skill, but how do I
begin to make the particular potions I want to make? If I know a set
of ingredients, are there ways to go after those ingredients? Or do I
just have to try every merchant and wander around in the wilderness?

Oh and should I buy all the alchemist's equipment at each skill level,
novice, journeyman, etc.?

Thank
j

There are a few recipe scrolls around, but they usually only cover one
or two effects, usually healing or dispelling.

You will find the other Alchemy tools easily enough in dungeon crawls,
no need to buy them.

You can get Alchemy experience simply from munching on ingredients.
Even regular food will boost your alchemy. Eat all the food you see.
Munching individual ingredients works as well, though watch out for the
ones that plainly say "Damage Attribute".

I've generally found that some ingredients tend to be regional, and
some are partial to hills or caves or lakes.

I heard that someone came up with a mod to automatically gather
reagents as you walk by them. I have to go look for that mod.

Yep. It's not so difficult - when you choose an ingredient, only the
compatible other ingredients will show up. Go on - it's a bit like the
"mini-games" (lockpick and speechcraft) - once you get the hang of it,
it's no big deal.

Or find it, as your skill rises...

Eat ingredients, make a lot of "restore fatigue"-potions (that's the
easiest to start with) and quaff or sell them.

There is a mod called "Alchemists Reference" which you can find at the
TESSource. The mod adds a book to the "All Things Alchemical" shop in
Skingrad. The book is not owned and may be freely taken. Inside you
will find a listing of most Alchemical Formulas for potion creation as
well as some ideas on where to find the necessary reagents.

Always use the best alchemist equipment that your character can find,
buy, or borrow/steal. If your character joins the Mage guild, he/she
will find plenty of FREE for the taking Novice alchemy equipment
laying around that they use or sell. As for getting ingredients, you
can buy them from numerous shops, or pick them, or you can find a mod
at the TESSource (there are several different mods) that will
automatically pick ingredients from plants when your character get
near them...

As a general rule, I stockpile various alchemy ingredients, potions,
scrolls, extra repair hammers, weapons and armor in chests in each of
the homes my character owns in case he might need them. That way in
many cases, my character doesn't have to travel far to stock up on
needed stuff or drop off useful surplus stuff (to reduce weight).
Granted I could sell some of the stuff rather than store it, however
why bother IF my character Might need it later.

That's my 2¢,

I just found a really good website that shows the ingredients needed for
certain types of potions:
http://oblivion.melian.cc/?cmd=cmdOblivionAlchemyWizard It has a search
facility thingy, so if you want to make a feather potion for example you can
select that and you get a list of the ingredients that will make one up.

My personal favourite potions are feather, restore health and night eye -
especially night eye - I get scared in the dark!

Happy cooking :)
