Has anyone seen these .BMP screenshots of a supposed 3D Doom level editor?

I was on Software Creations BBS earlier and saw the file, so I got it. I
viewed the bmps and have to say that if this is not a hoax that someone
concocted with Windows' Paintbrush, we may soon have the perfect DOOM level
editor available.

It looks like a 3-d wireframe display of the level being edited, which would
imply that the display can be rotated and zoomed to get a look at it from
all angles. If the editor itself uses this interface, I'll be a _very_
happy guy.

I'll try to upload these to ocf.unt.edu as DOOM-3D.ZIP. I urge everyone who's
interested in creating new levels to check them out.

Also, there was no information as to the name of the editor or who the author
was or anything. If anyone has this info, I for one would really like to
hear it.

I believe that the picture in quetsion is the map editor ID uses on their NeXT
machine. The picture was published in Game Developer magazine. As far as I
know, no screen shots of JADE (or any other editor) have been released.

This is not hoax: the 3d stuff belongs to ME, and the editor is
DOOMVB. As of right now, the current version is 3.0, which does NOT
have the 3D stuff in it. Version 4.0 DOES, though.

The editor itself is still in 2D (it would be hard to place objects
and walls in a 3D mode), but you when you click on a toolbar button,
a line appears on the map representing a camera line of sight. Moving
the line's endpoints changes the location of the viewer and the spot
he's looking at. When you've got that set, right click and the 3D
view is rendered! You can also change user elevation, so you can put
yourself right in a room.

Thanx for the 'perfect level editor' comment. Very flattering.

I'm holding back version 4 until I get the NODES thing figured out,
so we can all create levels from scratch. If demand is high and the
NODES thing continues to prove elusive, I'll release an itermediate
version with the 3D preview stuff.

thanx again!

The program is a joke. Simply someone with a lot of time on their hands. Why?
Because doom uses a 2D engine, not a 3D (this is why object on the ground
always rotate with you as you walk around them). Sorry, it would be nice,
but alas impossible.

I hear QUAKE is supposed to use a 3D engine though.

Your logic is faulty. Sure DOOM is a 2D map, with a 3d perpective.
You might try editing some levels. It would be conceivable to create an
editor that allowed you to "walk" thru a DOOM level and change the
textures on the walls, lower the ceilings, raise the floors, etc.

Since every line has two sides, a top texture, a middle texture (level
with the floor), and a upper texture, it would be useful to see in a 3-d
perspective where you need to put these things. Not every line has all
three textures, but the ones that do are difficult sometimes to see on a
flat editor/map.

As far as objects rotating... well I would consider LIVE enemies objects
and they don't always face you. I imagine it is more of a
space/speed/memory question than an impossiblity of the DOOM engine.
For every object to be 3-d you would need atleast 8 bitmaps. Seems like
a lot of wasted disk space and processor time to me. Who has time to
look at the dead bodies anyway? :)

Thanks for the reply. I'm quite impressed with the way you've done this, it
seems a very well thought out approach. Do you have any idea of when the NODES
thing might be figured out? I realize that it's a sticky problem and one that
a lot of people are wrestling with, but are you making progress?

Say (hypothetically, of course) that I put a plasma cannon to your head and toldyou to give an estimate of when a working version 4.0 that will allow creation
of complete, playable levels would be ready...what would you say? ;-}

Please keep us updated on your progress. I, for one, am VERY interested.

BTW, ignore my message to you on Software Creations. You answered my questions
here.

Thanks,

GDS

Hmm.. is the editor DOS or Windows-based? From the pictures, the buttons
looked very Windows-y.

I hope it does. I don't like the idea of not being able have walkways
