I'm a long time DOOM2 player, and I just recently bought DOOM 3.
While the atmosphere and sound design and level design are excellent,
and while the monsters are effing sublime...is there anyway to be able
to aim without using the ^%$&ing mouse??

I'm so used to keyboard controls: running and sidling with my right
hand, shooting/strafing/changing weapons with my left. I need a third
hand to play this one! It's just so unnatural to move with the left
hand and then aim with the right, and the mouse just sucks frankly,
you can't play a POV shooter a mouse, imo.

Am I missing something? Is there a different setting or something?
It's proving to be incredibly frustrating. The game seems so slow
this way, constantly moving my hand to control the mouse, constantly
slowing down. The joy of DOOM was it's quick movements. Hell, I used
to be able to duck out of the way of a Cyberdemon, now I can't even
avoid the demons cause I can't lower the shotgun without stopping.

I found the ability to turn quickly to aim in any direction to be the
mouse's "killer feature" over the fixed turn speed of the keyboard in
the original game.

Once you get used to mouse, you never go back. :)

Real, serious, good players use the keyboard/mouse combo. It's the only
way to be truly effective. If you don't believe that, well, you're suckin'.

I agree that most people find the mouse an improvement but your
statement is harsh. There are some good keyboarders, for instance
Ryback:

So that's done at last, I'm very proud of it, fourth player ever to achieve
this and, I hope everyone notes, the only keyboarder :)

Perhaps, but that is an extreme exception. For nearly all "average"
gamers, using the KB alone will seriously reduce effectiveness.

Well, I'm seriously reducing effectiveness now, because I can't
maneuver properly with one hand on the damn mouse. I get hung up on
things, and I certainly can't sidle and shoot at the same time. I
defy anyone to be able to sidle and shoot while using the mouse to
aim. That's my complaint.

You slide with your left hand on the KB, and aim/shoot with the mouse.

It's very easy:

Left hand:

Middle finger on W for forward.
Middle finger on S for backward.
Point index finger on D for strafe right.
Ring finger on A for strafe left.
Thumb on spacebar to open doors and jump or any other action you want on
there.
F and/or G to do special things... or any other key.
C to crouch.
Z to prone.

Right hand:

On mouse to look around and shoot.
Left mouse button: fire
Right mouse button: alternate fire or iron sight or whatever you want.
Wheel mouse: could even be cycle weapons.

Now all you need is some practice and soon you'll be dominating this
creatures =D

This works even very well in Doom 1.

Bye,
Skybuck.

Perhaps you should try inverting the mouse.

Yes, KB + Mouse is the way to go! And yes, Chris (Ryback) is an
incredible player. I've watched many of his demos over the years.

I don't understand how this person can't "slide" or circle strafe and
shoot simultaneously. I would suggest to put down Doom3 for a bit, go
back to Doom2, go to Compet-N, watch some demos, read the player's
bios and mouse/keys settings and realise that 99.9% of the best
players in the world all use KB/mouse.
