I was just talking with Dave Taylor at id, and he tells me that if
anyone sees the REGISTERED version of DOOM in a software store (or
catalog), to send the store's name and phone # to id.
(he...@idsoftware.com, d...@idsoftware.com, jo...@idsoftware.com, etc.)

He says that don't have the ability to track down the distributor (too
expensive, I assume), and the SPA is just a load of fools. (i.e. if they
win the case, they keep all of the money; they won't do a thing
regarding this, etc.)

What has happened was that a German company copied the Registered DOOM
onto disks and CD-ROMs, and then an American distributor (whose name he
couldn't say), KNOWING FULL WELL THAT THEY WERE ILLEGAL COPIES, sold
them to retailers. id is currently dealing with this distributor.

On another note, he says that there will be no bugs in QUAKE, and it
will be released in two weeks, approximately.

Jered, are you sure he said 'Quake'? And 'two weeks'? I'm almost positive
he meant Doom 1.4, as did you. It's not nice to tease us with such
things. If you're in contact with id (which is a good thing), be sure to
quote them accurately (which is also a good thing).

Re: Quake (two weeks)

Darn it you guys, can't you take a joke? That part was based on how
everything is always in two weeks. (I thought everyone would get that
part, anyways..)

I was a little less than accurate in my original post, so let me clarif
some things.

1) Send the name of the store to d...@idsoftware.com. Don't bother the
other guys.

He says they don't have the
ability to correct each store, not the distributor. the distributor
is the bad guy we want to catch. we and the stores are victims.
it's been our experience so far that the stores had no knowledge
of their sales being illegal. it was the distributor who led them
to believe otherwise.

And as for the SPA,
they aren't helpful in this case because they keep the money if
there is a case fought. as for "they won't do a thing..", that's
wrong. they'll take stuff to court for you.
