Crazy idea: AGD2 European RL meeting

if maybe it is fun to organize a Real Life meeting. Most likely I will
be unemployed for two more months, so I would have the time to think
some more about it and find a nice place. But the most important
question then is: Would anybody here be interested in meeting the
others, or do you all prefer the anonymity of usenet? (:

free time that i care to have, but at the same time money is kind of
scarce...
but with enough time to plan i guess its possible to get cheap flights
throughout europe...

I looked at the map, and the Cologne/Bonn area is halfway between
Paris and Berlin, and not too far from Brussels. Plus there is an
airport for the people who want to fly.
Easyjet flies there in principle from Gatwick, but a popup window
announces upon testing that this route will be served again only from
September 27th. You could go from Luton to Dortmund (and then onwards
by different means of transport), but *testing* only from September
1st, d'oh! Oh, you could go to Paris with the Eurostar and meet Babe
there, before leaving from Paris together.
If Hannes is still here then we would probably go by car and could
pick up Hansi and Kris on the way, so that shouldn't be a problem.
Any pros or cons concerning that area of Germany?
I could of course invite you all to my place (in Berlin), very
central, three airports around, each of them not more than 40 minutes
away by public transport (and not much faster by car), Easyjet,
Ryanair, Air Berlin etc fly here from Stansted or Luton (my flight to
Stansted and back is 40 Euro btw). Three rooms, bathtub, DSL flatrate,
no pets currently, what more do you need?

My roommates would find it weird - they won't be on holidays on July -
that's too bad, cause it would have been fun to have you around: 30th
floor, gorgeous view over Paris, 3 rooms, huge living-room and even a
"fumoir" with couchs everywhere, comics, books, big CD collection, quad
JMLabs HiFi, and 1m-thick floor, walls and ceiling... a student's dream :)

Hmm, I wonder how much is the Eurostar ticket nowadays. There might be a
critical amount of people required to make the overall transport cost
cheaper with Eurostar&Car than with plane. Besides, AFAIK, as for
travelling from Paris to Koln, the fastest solution might well be the
THALYS train. Gotta check this: the problem is, as soon as the train
leaves France, it travels slower, or so I'm told ;)
Another thing to take into account is the 14th of July is holiday in
France, meaning a lot of people will travel back to Paris on Sunday 18th
(damn lazy french ;)) -> high traffic back to Paris -> plane for english

Pro : half-way for about everyone
Con : how long can we stay there (it would be bizarre to just spend an
afternoon together), and how much will the hotel cost? I don't have a
problem with spending money during my vacations (that's what vacations are
for, anyway) - but I suppose students & jobless people might find it
hard...

I didn't think so much about a hotel, rather to rent an apartment or
little house for the weekend. I know the people from diablo2.de do it
regularly, somewhere in the middle of nowhere not too far away from
Aachen, so it should be possible. Plus my brother lives in Bonn, I
could ask him if he knows a cheap place.

From Brussels: 12h by bus, probably easier to fly

From Karlsruhe (near where Michael lives): 7h f you have a speedy car

It does, but in french it's more or less become a generic and rather
"classy" word to call a room where you can lean in and just forget about
everything. My roommate calls it "le Havre de Paix" ("The Peace Haven"),
and she doesn't smoke. I do, and she yells at me every time she can :)

I have talked to my brother, he doesn't know a place like we are
looking for, neither does he know anybody who is on holiday and
willing to rent out their flat/house to us.
The currently biggest problem is: Most German states have school
holidays. There are houses called "Jugendgästehaus", they are run by
either some kind of youth hostel organisation or by a church. They are
quite cheap (~10 Euro per night and person), and you have to bring
your own food (kitchen available), bedclothes etc. There are one or
two available during the July weekends, but they are not even close to
Cologne, rather near Dresden. So I guess we need a different idea.
