Comments like "PK'ing in HC is a legal kind of playing to climb the ladder"
won't win you many friends around here. Pkers (even 'legal' ones) are
scumbags who use cheap tricks & subterfuge to fuck over honest,
team-oriented PvM players out of their hard-won characters, no exceptions, &
your opinion certainly not-withstanding. If they wanna climb a ladder they
can all get their own & go fuck each other over on it. Oh wait - that would
be called 'dueling', which IS the only honourable way to do PvP, so most of
the scumbags & redheaded stepchildren wouldn't like that, as it would make
the odds way too even.
Bullshit. PKs are nearly nonexistent in SC where they can do no real harm to
others. But in HC where they can torment and cause grief to other players
they are thick as flies. I think that's all that need be said about their
motivations and their character.
What's the point of playing public games on B-net if you can't trust anyone
and you constantly have to be looking over your shoulder. You certainly
can't get a decent co-op game going. And if by some stroke of luck you do
get one going, some griefer is likely to come along and kill someone. Or at
the very least chase everyone away, ruining a good game. The attraction of
HC is that the players are generally more experienced, and cooperative play
is usually at a premium so as to maximize the survival of your character.
PKs are just a fly in the ointment, that ruin an otherwise great game.

PKs are the scum of B-net. They revel in the grief they cause others. And
even if they only PK legitimately, they only victimize the newer and less
experienced players. It is perfectly logical for friendly, cooperative
players to warn each other about any threats in the game, particularly
griefer PKs.

How dare you judge how others like to play the game, and dismiss their play
style as somehow deserving to have their character deleted by a griefer?
Dismissing others or diminishing them is a standard practice to make
oppressing them palatable. It's this exact tactic that has been used to
justify bigotry throughout history.

I see that you are a self righteous person that tries to rationalize boorish
behavior. This exact behavior is what makes public B-net games in general so
vulgar and hostile. It would be SO much better if the friendly and
cooperative player were empowered, rather than the griefers and their
apologists.

For the subhuman, the bestial, this is true.

This is the point that needs underscoring: the attitude that enjoys
being an ambush PK (differing from a PVP dueler in a "DULES_R_US" game
requires the mind set that *enjoys* "accidentally" bumping a stack of
books onto somebody's fragile science project, crushing it into junk.
That's a ton of laughs for these sick minds and black hearts.

Yeah, what does it say of you to justify dishing out grief to those who
have no desire for it? Go into "DUELS_R_US" games, and I happily don't
care. Ruin the public games with the ambush PKs, and you're just sick.

USEast HC Ladder: Rockstomper
Shh! I agree with Joerg on the PK matter.
Ladder PK is a good thing. Tracking a powerful character on the ladder
ranking, and PKing it so you can progress through the higher spheres of
the ladder, is bound to happen. Read R.A. Salvatore for what a true
hardcore ladder means. Running the hardcore ladder is exciting,
interesting, dangerous, and would be the exact replication of softcore
ladder if not for PKs.
Of course, I completely despise random PK psychos, such as BMPK clans.
But I accept the concept of hunting someone in particular, because,
well, he has acquired enough power and deserves to be hunted.
>
>But I accept the concept of hunting someone in particular, because,
>well, he has acquired enough power and deserves to be hunted.
LOL - that reminds me of playing Assassin while in college. Anyone
ever play that?
Assassin was a group of people who would hunt each other down.
Everyone would receive a contract for another person. The only off
limits area was classes. You used suction cup dart guns. There could
be 0 witnesses. When you kill a person then you get their contract.
As each kill happens the circle gets smaller and smaller unto 2 are
left hunting each other. Usually took 2-3 weeks to complete. You can
nail the person anywhere and at any time of the day or night.
My favorite all time kill was when I drew a guy who was a dominoes
delivery guy. I hid in the shadows and waited for him to return from
a delivery. I then snuck up to the passenger side of his car and hid,
looking under the car towards the front door of Dominoes. In a 4
college town I knew he wouldn't be inside too long.
Out he comes, both arms full of pizza. As he gets to his door I jumo
up, lay my arm across the roof of his car and nailed him in the chest.
He almost dropped those poor people's pizzas.
That was a fun kill.
Anyway, your post reminded me of those games. I was the champ 3 years
running. It came to the 3rd year and everyone was trying to get me
killed. I was too good. Ninjas rule the night.
RU
The problem is, you don't gain XP by pking, only by killing monsters & most
pking scumsucker builds rely on leeching at many points in the game to
progress, whereas the PvM player (well, most decent, coop oriented ones)
have worked hard to get to where they're at. Plus a lvl 20-ish pker could
easily kill a lvl 70+ PvM char - where's the balance of risk & fairness in
THAT!?

Woohoo! I first thought you were referring to RL assassin, as in, really
hunting a real human and committing a real murder... *shivers*
But, yeah, I played that game once or twice, it's exciting and really
immersive, but the fact that you had to give up about everything for this
game for a long period of time (no truce, nowhere to hide for a week or
two) got me down the drain along with the pizzas I was delivering. ;)
just joking on the pizza thing :)
I kinda agree with babe on this issue, not that i like to agree with a

No pain, no gain.
Being fairly new to hardcore i should be a easy victim.
So far i have been tppk'ed twice as my only two looses to not pvm play.
Lost one time in a lld in a little deathmatch we did on a boring saturday

I have been tried pk'ed to many times to remember, but never died.
It's a part of the game, no matter if you like it or not. And i have a
hard time believing that you have a char that can handle a charging lister
and pack, but not a little charging pally.

You are right Nostromo, pkers are scumbags, they use hacks to kill
characters who are less strong than the pker (are they afraid that a little
character can run away ??)
In real life pkers are cowards that try to molest children, because they
are afraid of adults.

So ignoring any mods, hell lister does how much damage? (150ish)
I was chatting to someone on usenet recently who managed to have
> 1.5k damage on a level 28 barb (okay, a mere 400 after pvp
penalty) :-p I think a charging pally could do better. And the
other difference is, you know what a lister looks like having
faced off against the *extremely good* AI 1000 times. Facing a
PK might be a little different.
No doubt about it, the most dangerous monster in the game is a
well built PK.

How do you get to baal then?
Have to admit i haven't really faced lister in hell on my own yet.
But at level 32 and higher i can take +2 hits from him without going down.
My last encounter with him and his friends on nm was a laugh, they
couldn't but a small scratch in my nice blue armor.
and when i visit him on hell i'll laugh at him again iirc.
So if my little assumption about him not doing more damage than lister i
would feel pretty safe.
But maybe it's just me who likes to build chars that are able to withstand
getting lister with friends spawned on top of you, in stead of hiding :)

I also know how a pk'er looks like, and 11 out of 10 times their AI is
worse than listers.
Unless you hanging around wp's and town exits you have a pretty good
warning time before they can get you.
I'm old and slow, so when i can cast a tp and enter it faster than someone
can tele down to throne of destruction, even when the know the way i think

Well, I'm saying most dangerous 1 on 1 monster. A well built PK is
the rarest monster in the game too - there is probably 1 for every
1000 spawned listers.
Ian
> Or...nice troll Babe! >;-p
Thanks! :P
sorry, but I can't agree with the level 70+ PvM char vs lvl 20ish PK
thing, especially in HC. I've been assaulted a number of times by low-mid
level PKs, and honestly, they couldn't kill me and I couldn't kill them.
Even my level 22 pure untwinked summonning druid was more or less powerful
enough to at least survive to a level 20 chargeadin PK. I had enough time
to go to town, he taunted me into a duel, which I accepted, then gave up
because I had no more mana pots after a few *minutes*.
Moreover, you miss the main point of my pro-PK argument: ladder ranking.
The victim MUST be on the ladder for me to accept the idea of "ladder
PKing". so it should be reserved to level 90ish+ public hardcore baalers,
those who NO LONGER play honestly, cooperatively and the hard way their
characters. They use dirty cheap tricks to level (public baal runs)
instead of playing the game, I don't see any reason why they shouldn't be
hunted by dirty cheap PK's with ladder climbing as a purpose. If their
characters deserve to live and keep on with the competition, then they
should survive easily.
And I still agree with you and maintain that PK'ing random characters as a
way to climb some sort of BMPK ladder is i) the dumbest way to make me
angry, and ii) the fastest way to make me turn BabyGhost into a deadly PKK
once (if) she's ready.

I *know* I can build a character than can handle a (non-fanatic/might
enhanced), Lister, but I'd never assume I could handle a PK'er of any
stripe, even one many levels lower. I've learned that lesson the hard way a
couple of times.
They may be "part of the game", but they're nothing but a disruptive
element, and I'd be willing to bet that as manifested, they're not at all
what Blizzard had in mind when they make them part of it. Why they continue
to allow them in light of the hacks the group at large uses to do their
dirty work remains a mystery to me.

Exactly, and that's probably the worst effect of enabled PKing of all. I
can only imagine that Blizzard envisioned heightened group effort to
confront and defeat the offending PK'er, when in actuality any existing
group play is completely ruined.

Could be, but most likely it's simple bullheadedness not wanting to admit
they were wrong in the reality of the PK'ing feature as compared to their
perceived ideal, since they've had several opportunities to eliminate or
modify the Hostile feature, and haven't except in very minor fashion.
My biggest gripes about PK'ing are that it practically destroys co-op public
games, and that all the advantages are weighted in favor of the PK'er.

If you really believe this to be the truth, then you, my fine furry
feathered friend, are more delusional than the rest of us here put together
ROFLMAO!
Pkers, *by enlarge*, DON'T GIVE A FLYING FUCK about climbing any god-damn
ladders - get...it...into...your...thick...skull. They only care about
fucking up other ppl's fun & causing *grief*. Ppl who do this is RL are
called 'sociopaths'. Look it up.
<snipped rest of specious arguments & pathetic rationalisations>
No, I thought about it carefully, it's still bullshit.

Right, they can kill another character, just like in HC. The game mechanics
and the challenge of the 'hunt' is exactly the same. The only difference is
the effect it causes to the other player. Since they can cause grief to
another player it gives them pleasure. That's sick, and nothing to admire or
honor.

Then what's the point of B-net? I can arrange tcip/lan games amongst my
friends. But B-net was designed for people to meet others and play
MULTIPLAYER games. PK just ruin that.

SC has no juice, it bores me to tears. And legit PKs are absolutely no
threat to my characters. The only thing they can accomplish is to break up a
good co-op game by chasing everyone away. Against an experienced player a PK
has NO chance to kill a character unless the 'victim' decides to stand and
fight. If a PK wants a duel, there are plenty of games to do that. By coming
into a PvM game they either want to kill a newbie or disrupt the game. How
can that possibly be fun or challenging? Their sole goal is to cause grief.

I have plenty of folks to play private games with. And it is extremely
enjoyable not to have to worry about juvenile griefers disrupting my games.
But sometimes I like to meet new people and make new friends. PKs ruin that
aspect of B-net. And for what purpose, to satisfy their antisocial
pleasures.

There are many private channels and private games loaded with people who
just want to escape the griefer PKs. It's a shame that the friendly,
respectful players have to hide away, while the griefers roam the public
realms. And many players who were not able to find these private communities
have left B-net in disgust. It's a sad statement that good people have to
suffer just so a few griefers can have their fun.

If it were only legit PKs it wouldn't be a problem. And your idealistic
vision might be valid. But for every legit PK how hunts other characters
honorably there are thousands of TPPK, WP jumpers and script kiddies. Given
the shoddy job Blizzard has done controlling hacks on the realms, the
implementation of the hostile 'feature' is unconscionable.

If you want to survive a TPPK or a WP jumper you absolutely do not have time
to arrange a private game. You've got to exit the game instantly on hostile.
And the skilled 'legit' PKs usually work in teams with a spotter (who will
loot them if something goes wrong). So arranging your hypothetical private
game will usually include the spotter. I'm intimately aware of PK tactics, I
know how they work. Your suggestion is a fantasy.

I've played HC for a long time. Recently I've played HC style characters
with some friends in the SC realms. I can say with authority that the level
of cooperative play is MUCH less in SC games. BO is much rarer than in HC,
as is OS. A party sticking together and working as a team is seen much less
often. And tactical play is far less advanced.

Absolutely.

Sorry, but once again I say bullshit. It's the exact same game, except death
is permanent. There's no 'war', that's just something you ascribe to the
game. Your personal vision. The game is exactly the same, HC and SC, except
death is permanent.

Not to be critical, because it seems English is not your native tongue. But
I don't understand what you're saying here.

Yes, I can absolutely blame someone who uses the hostile button in HC. In HC
you cause grief to other players by permanently deleting their character.
While in SC, PKing only causes a temporary annoyance. PKs in SC are
extremely rare, while in HC they are very common. Someone who willingly
causes grief for others is to be criticized in the strongest terms. Calling
them scum is quite mild compared to what they deserve. And 99.9% of PKs only
do so because of the anonymity of the Internet. If they had to look their
'victims' in the eye, the vast majority of them would not have the guts to
do so. They are cowards and bullies, emboldened by anonymity and a lack of
consequences.

Yes I absolutely can. When I walk down the beach I could destroy a little
child's sand castle with little fear of reprisal. Just because I CAN do it
doesn't mean that it is all right.
> And to carry it to an extreme: If you want to abolish PK'ing, than

Is that so? Please supply a link or cite a source showing this. If muling is
not an intended part of the game, then what possible reason could there be
for the loot button in HC? The only purpose of the loot button is to mule
the gear of a dead HC character away for use on it's replacement. Blizzard
says as much in their FAQ on the Arreat Summit. In this point you are
indisputably wrong.

Then what is the difference to warn people in a newsgroup. We all share tips
and strategies here to further the survival and success of our characters.
Why should it be different with regard to PKs? Their goal is to spoil our
fun, why can't we spoil their griefer fun?

Just because something is easy for you, don't judge others for doing the
same. Everyone does not have the same level of knowledge and skill.

Sorry, but you need to hear it for a few more generations. Lest history
repeat itself. Better to repeat it once too often, than once too few.

Sorry, but that's more bullshit. It's a game, and in game terms I'm reviling
the miscreants. Unlike some other folks I'm not saying that PKs are
criminals or child molesters. Nor should they be tortured or killed. But
they are indeed scum, contemptible individuals without a shred of honor. By
your own logic, Blizzard intended PKs to be in the game. But they also
intended PKs to be there for the folks who want to role play the evil
character. Well if they're playing the evil character they must accept all
that that entails. Including insults from the good characters.

Hey, you can do whatever you want. But if you come around me spouting the
'honorable' PK bullshit I'm going to tell you what I think, and that's not
too pleasant for the PKs.

Please address the difference I have raised about the stark difference
between SC and HC PKs. I think that fact alone speaks volumes about the
motivations of PKs.

You missed the point completely. Blizzard empowered the griefer PK. They can
enter any PvM game and turn it into a PvP game. This fact has led to a
perverted society on B-net where hostility and paranoia reign supreme. If
instead the friendly, respectful and cooperative players were empowered the
Realms could be a MUCH better place.

I though better of you, Joerg. Something like, letting this discussion

Mark you are right, my English is not so good but i like what you wright
about the pk'ers.
I lost more than 20 characters in HC and never against a little pk'er.
Mostly the pk'ers were two till three times stronger as my characters, and
they used hacks so i could not escape. I have seen a lvl 80 barbarian that
killed a lvl 20 character. ( what a HERO that was)

Maybe you need to start all over again . . .

If you need to email, then chainbreaker (naturally) at comcast dot
net--that's "net" not "com"--should do it.
I disagree completely. I've been arguing the PK issue in D2/LoD for over 4
years, since Max Shaeffer addressed the subject in AGD before the game was
released. And my opinion has migrated a bit through the years. When I was
playing with some of the notorious PKs I had a respect for their chosen play
style. Very similar to what Joerg is saying now. But the more I thought
about it and the more I discussed it my opinion hardened against them. The
key point for me was when someone asked the PKs if they PK their friends.
Because if PKing was indeed a part of the game, and there really was nothing
wrong with it, they shouldn't have any problem deleting their friends
characters. But invariably PKs do not kill their friends, so this is tacit
admission that what they are doing is wrong. Joerg has only been playing HC
for a short time, his opinion may change with more experience with the
reality of PKing, rather than just its theoretical application.

(1) I haven't booked early enough to get cheap tickets.

Ian
In my noob HC days, I lost two characters to PK'ers about half their level,
so this probably happens a lot more than you think.
And Joerg, when you throw down the gauntlet like you did when you said, "I'm
here to get and share knowledge about a computer game, not for
making friends.", my initial impulse was "who the hell is this?", and to
ignore you completely.
A statement like that is almost assured to get you neither knowledge nor
friends. We aren't obliged to share what we know with anybody, particularly
somebody displaying an attitude like that.
Now maybe you didn't realize that's what you were doing, and maybe that's
not how you intended it to be, but I'm sure several took it as a virtual
nose-thumbing, particularly since most regular posters here play HC almost
exclusively and look on PK'ers of any stripe as lower than god's lowest
creatures. And a nose-thumbing like that is practically guaranteed to get a
response like you got from a couple of our more "high strung", yet beloved
members. :-)
There's been nothing new added to the PK'er discussion here--this subject
has been debated here ad nauseum for years--and you should be grateful to
Mark and even Nostromo, for granting you as much "ink" as they did. They at
least thought enough to respond, whereas I'm sure a lot of others considered
you not to be worth wasting time on, as I initially did.
That said, we do welcome dissenting opinion--god knows there have been some
major knock-down drag-outs here over the years. By and large though, the
disagreements have been presented with an air of respect toward the other
person's viewpoint and most importantly, the other person.
Maybe you want to be a "rogue" voice, and that's OK, but if so you'll
eventually be talking to yourself. I don't really think that's the case
however, and is why I said earlier that you might want to start all over
again. :-)

I completely disagree that Joerg is a BM sympathiser. BM is a hacker PK
clan, Joerg has specifically said that he condemns people who hack to PK. He
simply thinks that legit PKing is honorable. There's a huge difference, and
IMO your accusation that he is a BM sympathiser is dead wrong.
