I have used Descent on various machines up to Win98.

I'm now trying to use it on Win-XP. I can't get the joystick to work. It is
recognized by XP and it works fine with Flight Sim 98 but it refuses to
work with Descent.

I've tried every selection in SETUP.

The version of Descent is 1.0

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Old fashion game port joystick, A "digital" joystick that uses the game
port's MIDI interface or a later model one that plugs into a USB port?

I tried a USB stick first with the idea that I wouldn't have to buy a pc
board with a game port.

It didn't work.

Thanks for the response.

Trouble with DOS games that use a joystick is that the game itself has
the code for a joystick that uses the analog circuitry of a game port,
bypassing the DOS. Such games lack the code to use USB port game
controllers and sometimes even "digital" game port sticks that use the
game port's MIDI capabilities.

The text based operating systems only had provisions for simple file
access. The computer's ROM based BIOS handled the keyboard input and
text display on the monitor. Any support for loading multiple
"simultaneous" applications, graphics based interfaces and game
controllers was handled by code in the application or separately
purchased utility packages.

On the other hand, Windows based games have the ability to access game
controllers through the operating system. Since the controller
manufacturer can supply drivers allowing the Windows Operating System to
access their proprietary hardware, this allows Windows games the
opportunity to utilize game controllers, like the USB joysticks, that
hadn't been invented when the game was developed.

First of all, make sure to patch Descent 1 to the highest available
version.

If you also have Descent 2, you can also try D2X-XL (www.descent2.de),
which is a Descent 2 OpenGL mod allowing to play Descent 1 missions
with it (using the D2 AI for the robots though). D2X-XL has a lot of
new features and modernized graphics, but can also be made to look
like the original D2_3dfx version.

Moon seems to be somewhat biased since I told him that I am fed up of
his constant nitpicking on D2X-XL whenever he encountered a problem
with it. I just don't like it if people are already getting a special
treatment by me (which he did) and still don't show the smallest sign
of appreciation for it. ;)

Biased my ass. I wasn't aware I had ANY responsibility to advertize your
port. Funny to see you reverting to your childish self simply because I
tell him to get the better port ;)

Insults don't make it any better.

Talk about childish.

You have the typical narcissist attitude I have come to know from many
people who got stuck on some university. Nothing new here.

So why did you write these lines:

"Funny to see you reverting to your childish self"

"characterless low life that you are"

"Waiting for you to grow a brain or at least a decent attitude seems to
be a waste of time. Is trying to thing really that painful for you?"

?

I didn't write the "childish ... blah". ;)

As far as the rest goes: You act brain- and characterless, so what do

Bohoo, swing and amiss! Keeping an uni account automatically means I am at
university? Besides, it would still be better than wasting countless hours
on an inferior port nobody plays.

Exactly, you're still as pathetic as ever. I can sympathize though, after
all you've been banned anywhere for being the ass you are so you're forced
to stay loudmouthed on unmoderated forums where this can't happen. But
here's a newsflash for you: killfiltering you forever is darn easy and I'm
just glad to not have to waste any more time on you.

I bet you anything you can't resist the urge to go on though, that's just
who you are. Good riddance, lamer!

I don't really care whether you're still at a university or not - you
do expose the typical know all and "I am better than you because I am
so much smarter" behaviour I know from many people who are on
universities or left them just recently. You are that kind of person
who takes the own grandness for granted, believing it gives them a
carte blanche to behave sociopathically, showing now signs of
friendliness or appreciation for anything done for them. I have seen
it.

Anyway, you once got told by what I think about your arrogant tone
towards me whenever you encountered a problem with D2X-XL, and that's
constantly showing now, and that and nothing else is the real issue
behind your behavior. Talk about childish.

You couldn't have said something more stupid than calling D2X-XL the
"inferior" port. It shows both that you are not just tremendously
biased, but on a vengeance, and that you are technically absolutely
clueless.

As far as that butt licker Steveski goes: It is typical for parasites
like him that they bite the hand that feeds them: He uses my port, yet
he has the cheek to insult me.

You both have the significance of a stone in my shoe for me: You can
hurt somewhat, but the consequence will be just to put off the shoe
and shake you out of it. Your existence is but a waste of good air.

Something I just have to add: It is because Rebirth is so superior to
XL that XL has been offered by computer magazines already and has its
firm place in the Heise download repository while Rebirth doesn't,
right?

You are proving with every word what a foul mouthed negative little
critter you are. As far as the forum bans go: There's always two sides
to a story, and if the retired forum owner of descentbb.net writes
that I have been railed by the new "management" then it probably
wasn't me who was the problem. If a bunch of trollish mobsters like
e.g. you gets together and decides to get rid of a man who has done
more for Descent and the community than they could have ever dreamed
of, and they just cannot stand that because it lands them in the cold
reality of the fact that they aren't as significant as they'd like to
be, then the inevitable consequence will that you'll be gone sooner or
later. I had my own forum long time already.

Boils down to you being a liar, and a gutless one too. Well, you left
your final pee mark and put your head back in your butt to avoid
having more shrapnel flying around your ears. Please just stay there.

It was kind of satisfying to rip you two critters apart. It is pretty
rare that people expose themselves as much as you do, making goals the
size of a barn gate out of yourselves. If you can be trusted I will
also have the last word in this affair. :)

Actually, I use D1X and D2X - I did try your software some years ago but
didn't like it, which is why you have such a downer on me. I was impressed
that you wrote it (as I said at the time) but your attitude was appalling
when the slightest crit was made - you don't have just a chip on your
shoulder but a whole log. You seem to believe that everyone should bow down
before you like some Messiah. Your constantly aggressive attitude drives
people towards ANY other software and is, ultimately, self-defeating. I
expect that you will now resort to insults as is your habit.

BTW, thankyou - I'm going to check out Rebirth, which I wouldn't have done
if it were not for your foamy rantings - HTH, HAND.

Somehow ignoring me doesn't really seem to work for you, which doesn't
lend you too much credibility.

I have nothing of your using D2X-XL. It doesn't make a difference on
my end whether you use it or not. I couldn't care less if you stop
using it. Go use Rebirth, if you can settle for driving a Fiat 500
instead of a Mercedes Benz, then that is entirely up to you.

You insulted me here, not for the first time, and then complain about
the response? Oh, I see, it's alright if *you* do that, but not if I
do. Talk about a God complex, copycat. You're just another
characterless troll in the crowd.

I simply don't like people who lie, like you or Moon do, and I don't
insult people just for the heck of it like you and quite a few others
I have met do. I am a tough opponent if you want a fight, but at least
I have the character to keep it fair and by the facts, and that is
both stating that Moon is technically clueless or deliberately lying
and biased out of personal issues he is hiding here, and that your
entire behavior is character- and mindless. These are facts - you just
don't like being told that.

The problem with people like you is that you take everything I have
done for granted, coming along, nitpicking about D2X-XL, never
dropping a word of appreciation or gratefulness, totally forgetting
that it is free and has cost me a hell of a lot of time, completely
ignoring the fact that I am human being with feelings just as you, but
start to throw hissy fits if your feelings get hurt in response. The
saddest thing about this is that it is so pointless to appeal to any
sense of decency and fairness in you, Moon and some more people of
your likeness - because you cannot take being honest and feeling that
you are losing your face in the process (that feeling already being
rooted in your lack of character, in your failure to understand that
integrity also has to do with seeing one's own mistakes and backing
off of them). Instead you start to fight back any way you can, below
the belt as I have said here already. You just cannot keep it fair.
You are by far not the nice, good people you'd like to be. There is by
far not as much integrity in you as you'd like to believe. And you
cannot stand that. You cannot stand hearing that. You don't want to
judge yourselves. You rather kill the messenger.

How pathetic, how inferior is that? Go judge yourselves!
