What's the best D2 version right now?

I was running one of the D2x versions, tried another one which screwed
up my install, then when I tried to use what I thought was a good
backup it didn't work, so I'm about to start from scratch, looking for
recommendations.

I use D2XL on Windoze.

I prefer D2X-Rebirth. Closer to the original and far easier to set up.
