*** The alt.games.creatures FAQ on Acronyms ***

Version 2.7
Last changes on 20 September 2001

Recent updates:
* FAQs should now be posted automagically by bd's computer
* Added IRTA.

Purpose of this FAQ:
To give a list of acronyms, and explain where they are used. Also to aid
the general insanity of AGC and give me something to do. :)

1 What is an acronym?
2.1 What are 'LOL' and 'ROFL' in AGC?
2.2 What other acronyms are there in AGC?
3.3 Something I added
3 What do people mean when they say things in <angle brackets>?
4.1 What do people mean when they say 'AFK' or 'IAW' in JRChat?
4.2 What are the other acronyms in JRChat?
5 That's a pretty stupid thing to have an word for! I want to protest!
6 You just replied to your FAQ with the same post! What's happening?

----
1) What is acronym?
An acronym is an abbreviation of a commonly (or un-commonly :) used term.
Usually it makes up something that sounds like a word, but it doesn't have
to. For example, 'URL' (Universal Resource Locator) can be pronounced like
'earl'. You might also want to take a look at PGG's articles on acronyms
(http://www.galactic-guide.com/articles/2R181.html) and abbreviations
(http://www.galactic-guide.com/articles/2S61.html), the latter being fairly
funny.

----
2.1) What are 'LOL' and 'ROFL' in AGC?
These are commonly used acronyms in AGC (that's a acronym actually - it
means alt.games.creatures), and they mean this:
LOL - Laugh Out Loud
RO(T)FL - Roll On (The) Floor Laughing

----
2.2) What other acronyms are there in AGC?
I have to say a big thanks to PGG's article
http://www.galactic-guide.com/articles/6R46.html and .net's
(http://www.netmag.co.uk/) article on newsgroups. Now, here's the best
list I can make (in addition to those mentioned above), suggestions welcome:
ABGC: Alt.Binaries.Games.Creatures
AGC: Alt.Games.Creatures
AG, AGCG: AGC Game
AGCM: Alt.Games.Creatures.Moderated. A group set up a long time ago in
an attempt to moderate Creatures discussion. Most community members
disagreed with the idea, but alt.config created it anyway. Now no one except
spammers (the moderation facility doesn't work) posts there.
AGLAMI: Alt.Games.Lucas-Arts.Monkey-Island. Friends of AGC, used to be
cross-posted to a lot.
AFAICT: As Far As I Can Tell
AFAIK: As Far As I Know
AFD: Alt.Fan.Dragons
ATM: At The Moment
ASAP: As Soon As Possible
BTW: By The Way
CC: Creatures Community
EFRA: Equal Rights For Acronyms. A group which protested about the many
letters which were being forced to form acronyms so such idiotic things
as ERFAC could exist. Little did they know that the group itself
was contributing to the problem. Oh, all right, so I made that up.
ERFAC: Equal Rights For Animal Crackers. Theo writes: "The group that
protested to the deaths of hundreds of animal shaped biscuits every day
(and I think had more members that ERFN)." The only place in the CC I've
ever seen it mentioned is on LummoxJR's homepage, but in the interests
of completeness...
ERFN: Equal Rights For Norns. This was a group which protested
violently against Norn torturers, often going to the extent of
complaining to ISPs, attempting to hack websites or planting Trojans,
from what I've heard. The group is now hated by most (in)sane members
of the CC.
ERFNB: Equal Rights For NewBies. Erm...
ETLA: Extended Three Letter Acronym
ETTIN: Everyone Toast The Ignorant Naven!
FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions
FOAD: $%^& Off And Die
FWIW: For What It's Worth
FYI: For Your Information
GRTBR: Good Riddance To Bad Rubbish
GTNC: Give The Newbie Cheesepoints!
HAND: Have A Nice Day. Used in conjunction with HTH.
HANDA: Have A Nice Diurnal Anomaly. Occasionally used in conjunction with HTH.
HTH: Hope That/This Helps
IFCP: And insane acronym invented by emmel. He insists it
stands for something, but won't tell any of us what that
something is. It means "see other post".
IOW: In Other Words
IIRC: If I Remember Correctly
IMO: In My Opinion
IMHO: In My Humble Opinion
IMNSHO: In My Not So Humble Opinion
IRTA: I Read That As
ITIWF: I Thought It Was Funny (mainly used by RWS)
ITYM: I Think You Mean
IYSWIM: If You See What I Mean
IYO: In Your Opinion
JK (often j/k): Just Kidding
JISBU: John Ievins Style Bugger Up. Luke writes:
"These occur when you are replying to a post with multiple
discussions contained therein. A JISBU is either when you
leave a space blank intending to write a reply to that segment
later or begin writing a reply and then decide to finish it off after
the rest of the post is written, but then forget about the spaces
and send it, unfinished, leaving unsightly gaps."
OOI: Out Of Interest
OTOH: On The Other Hand
LTNS: Long Time No See
MFAQ: Meta-FAQ / Most Frequently Asked Questions
MLA: Multi-Letter Acronym
MS / M$: Micro$oft / Mind[less]sc[r]ape.
NBAPWRL: Norn Breeders Against People With Real Lives,
of which 'invisible girl' is the founder and Lifetime President.
NFAQ: Newbie Frequently Asked Questions. I think this should be FANQ...
NM: Never Mind
NNTP: Network News Transport Protocol (see my other FAQ)
NP: No Problem
NRN: No Reply Necessary
RAFO: Read And Find Out
RL: Real Life. This is a dangerous thing.
RO(T)FLMAO: Roll On (The) Floor Laughing My A*** Off
RTFF: Read the Flamin' FAQ
RTFM: Read the Flamin' Manual
SOL: Sadly Outta Luck / Sooner Or Later
TLA: Three Letter Acronym

WTF?: What the $%^&?
WTG: Way To Go
WWW: World Wide Web
WYSIWYG: What You See Is What You Get
YBYB: Yorkshire Born, Yorkshire Bred
YM: You Mean. Sometimes used instead of ITYM, by mind-readers.
YMMV: Your Mileage May Vary

----
2.3) Something I added
I recently came across http://piology.org/yabla.txt, and until I can be
bothered to write up the most important ones from it, that's a list you can
refer to for any acronyms not found here.

----
3) What do people mean when they say things in <angle brackets>?
These are abbreviations, and are still important for understanding what
people mean, so I'll include them (as always, more suggestions welcome):
<g> - Grin / Giggle
<eg> - Evil Grin
<veg> - Very Evil Grin
<veg,d&r> - Evil Grin, Duck and Run
<eg,d&rlh> - Evil Grin, Duck and Run Like Hell
<veg,d&rlhuhw> - Evil Grin, Duck and Run Like Hell Until Hitting the Wall
<veg,d&rlhuhwagu> - Evil Grin, Duck and Run Like Hell Until Hitting the Wall
And Getting Unconscious
<dg> - Double Grin (&c.)
<bg> - Big Grin (&c.)
<s> - Smile (evil smile, very evil smile, &c.)
<nirg> - Grin backwards. Don't ask me, I didn't make it up. And yes, I know
this isn't an acronym, but I was pressurised. So there.

----
4.1) What do people mean when they say 'AFK' or 'IAW' in JRChat?
Yes, there are more acronyms for JRChat. They mean:
AFK: Away From Keyboard
IAW: In Another Window

----
4.2) What are the other acronyms in JRChat?
Here's the best list I can make, suggestions welcome:
<All AGC acronyms, plus:>
AFC: Away From Computer/Chat
BBIAB: Be Back In A Bit
BRB: Be Right Back
BBL: Be Back Later
BBS: Be Back Soon
GTG/G2G: Got To Go

----
5) That's a pretty stupid thing to have an word for! I want to protest!
Well, sorry - you can't! :) If people use an acronym a lot, then it'll go
in here, no matter how stupid it sounds. Suggestions for more are always welcome.

----
6) You just replied to your FAQ with the same post! What's happening?
To quote Luke: "It's a FAQ, supposed to be posted once a week. When you
receive the post, since it has the same title as it did the previous time
it was posted, it's placed in the same thread and appears to be a reply."
- I couldn't have put it better myself.
