Any good sites for civ 4 info?
Will they make it addictive fun like Civ 2 - I doubt it
No need to explore, no trade routes, AI over expands, bogged down in massive
time consuming wars, all AI civs having identical tech lvls.

Wha? I'm guessing this and the following points are flaws you view
Civ3 as having?
No need to explore? There's a hell of a lot of need to explore early
game. Trading maps later is more realistic than having to go in and
explore yourself to see what even your allies' land looks like.

Tell that to the British in the last Civ3 game I played, who were
lagging a full "age" behind the rest of the world in tech because they
were in some remote corner of the map. Again, it's a realism thing.
The tech levels are -VERY- rarely -IDENTICAL-. But it is hardly
realistic to have the civs, unless they're isolated somewhere, lagging
much farther behind the rest of the world.

There are things I miss from Civ2, like spies that steal technology and
explorers that actually have something left to explore. Plus the animated
advisors in period costume were fun and somehow seemed more advanced than
Civ3's static screens..
It definitely needs less of the juvenile "you suck" crap at the end.
I hope for a better AI , the one in Civ3 certainly wasn't impressive. It
just cheats more on the harder levels...

Apply it to the Diplomacy screen, too.
In addition, I'd like a less dense background so the units can be
distinguished better. At present, if I "park" (fortify) a unit somewhere in
jungle or forest or mountain, half the time it escapes my notice when I'm
having a look around.

Did Civ2 have explorers? I don't remember them.
It's true that scouts and explorers are misnamed. Scouts should be called
explorers, because that is their main function. Explorers should be called
raiders because their main function is penetrating enemy territory and
pillaging his strategic resources.

absolute rubbish, I played and won 50 civ2 deity games (yes it was too easy)
straight without loss and many of those were just fighting barbarians which
were ramped to max.

I disagree it is actually more realistic and fun if they do vary vastly and
regularly in tech as well as size and power. Civ 2 I was often helping the
weaker civs and they did not seem to forget an ally as quick as in Civ 3 if
you played them right.

But anyway stay chilled, I over played Civ 2 and it is just my personal
views on some of the reasons why I think the magic is not there with Civ 3 -

I can count all AI cheats in Civ III on a single finger:
1. No Gray Zone; upon a tile is explored by an AI, the AI always has
full status of it. Including future resources. But this is used so
poorly by the AI that it often becomes a human exploit.
It's one and the same AI being used at all levels.
Now Civ III like all other games features handicaps, that below Regent
strongly favor the Human and above Regent progressively favor the AI,
but these aren't cheats. Certian multi player games when one human
outclasses the other allows handicaping the stronger player to give
more of a challenge.
Ah, but you can steal technology, there just isn't a physical unit called
a spy any more.

1. Buying the Tech
2. Reseraching it yourself.
I'll trade the juvenile behavior at the end for the ... umm "esteem
enhancing affirmations" of the advisors (no, I did not say they were a
bunch of suck-ups!)
