If you mean changing portraits on the NPC, so yes. Use shadowkeeper

Create a 'portraits' folder in your main BG directory and put your
new portraits in it. Name them jaheiraL.bmp and jaheiraS.bmp.
The game will use these instead of the default portraits.

Not sure what you mean by "nothing." Note that saved games (made
before you replaced the pics) have the original images
(Portrt0.bmp ... Portrt5.bmp).

... but when you load them the saved games should pick up the new
portraits from the 'Portraits' folder.
If you have BG running while you create the portraits or folder
you may find you get a blank portrait with a '?' in it. Reload BG
and it should pick up the new portraits.
If not, go back to the Character Record Screen and choose
customise / appearance.
The new portraits do not appear in the scroll of available
portraits. You have to click 'custom' [below the portraits] and
choose from a list of the names in the 'Portraits' folder.
You certainly don't have to start the game again.
Just a thought :
Jaheira isn't one of the names that has to be shortened is it?
Anybody know for certain? Maybe it needs to be JaheirL.bmp and
JaheirS.bmp.

This method still works, but the file names are different in BGII. I
know that Imoen is nimoenm.bmp and nimoens.bmp; you can find the name
of the main portrait used for any NPC by using Shadowkeeper.
I think you're right on the shortened name. I seem to remember that 6
letters was the maximum for a NPC portrait (6 letters was the max for
summoning characters via the CLUAConsole cheat menu), hence Coran
works alright, but Jaheira loses the end letter from her name. And
then you need to add the "L" or "S" to the end (um, that's a suffix,
right?) to complete the name. But having said that, I'm not sure if
they work if put into the Portraits folder, or if they need to go
somewhere else (te override folder would be my next guess).

I've switched NPC portraits many times using the 'portraits'
folder without any problems - the first was for Imoen whose
portrait simply doesn't match the voice.
It may work using the 'override' folder too since a number of
people have mentioned this in the past but I've never tried it
myself.
I've just checked the usage by importing Jaheira's new portrait
from BG2 into a TotSC game and there is no problem with the full
name. JaheiraL.bmp and JaheiraS.bmp work fine from the
'Portraits' folder.
However, if we're talking BG2 here, the names will be different.
See the suggestion from 'johndo' [m...@here.com] for getting the
names.

Thanks. A useful tip. When I finally get round to playing BG2
myself I'm almost certain to use it :-)

BG2 appears to have some funny naming conventions. I saw a post here
claiming that one can create Xan in BG2 to join the party (though
whether anyone would _want_ Xan is another story ;-)). I'll not
challenge you on the names, because I can never recall what the
maximum number of letters allowed is (IIRC the limit is 6 when using
the CLUAConsole cheats, but after that I'm very unsure). I generally
just stick with the default NPC portraits and keep a whole raft of
custom portraits for use in multi-player games.
