Am I missing something here? I want to use a custom
portrait for my character in BG1 (because the PC portraits suck
dead rats through a straw[1]), and the readme says I can do this
by copying the .bmp files into my "portraits" folder. Well, I
don't *have* a "portraits" folder. What's going on? How can I
import a custom portrait?

[1] Really, what were they thinking? A baldy muscleman, some dude
in full plate, a mad dwarf, the goofiest-looking elf I have
*ever* seen, and an guy with rats growing on his face. Oh, I'm
sorry, those are meant to be sideburns. *shudder*

You make the protraits folder in the game directory if it is not there!!
They don't tell you that either eh?

For the record, if BG1, portraits are poor, then the BG2 ones must fall off
the scale of dodginess. Aside from the fascination with scar tissue and
tattoos, I must also have missed the latest Amish hairstyling trends, now
that ringlets appear to be all the rage. Compared to this motley crew, the
BG1 team are positively radiant. Well, most of them anyway. Minsc
certainly looks a sight better than he does in BG2 (seems as though
someone's been squeezing his already vacuous head with a pair of forceps),
while Imoen looks far cuter in BG1. In fact, Viconia is probably the only
NPC who has improved in the portrait stakes, if only because she's no longer
waving her arms round like some sort of rabid air traffic controller.

BTW, one little thing the readme file doesn't mention about custom
portraits, but which is very good housekeeping in practice - they are case
sensitive when the game lists them. Hence I personally make sure to
capitalise all my portraits to avoid them getting all messed up. The game
certainly doesn't hlep by only giving a two line view when trying to select
a small character portrait, which can make finding a matching picture take
ages if (like me) you've got a shedload of custom pics.

I hereby nominate you for the position of newsgroup fashion editor :-)

I have a bunch of them that I just renamed them with numbers, m<xxxx> and
f<xxxx>. The <xxxx> is a number from 0001 to 9999 and m and f are male and
female respectively. Seems to work ok, renumbering is a pain though.

Arrange your custom portraits in a single folder. Daily eliminate the one
you can live without most easily. After 3 months you'll find your filing
system works perfectly.
When you get to 300 as a starting point a little pre-filtering into a
'favourites' folder works well. When you've not accessed to non-favourites
for 6 months just delete the whole folder :-)

Woohoo!! I hear chain mail and blood stains are 'in' this season ;-).

I've now a mixture of names and numbers, depending how many portraits I have
of a particular face. Hence HemanL.bmp for my one and only He-Man portrait
(the original, not the rehashed modern muck they pass off as He-Man), but I
think I'm up to Heigl7 or Heigl8. If only we were allowed longer
filenames...

Hmmm, after three months I'd have ten portraits left, which would still mean
I'd have to run two parties simulatneously ;-). As for Favourites folders,
I do try to purge them from my system whenever possible. Not least because
my natural desire for pointless organisational schema could result in
Favourite Soft Porn Images, Favourite Drinking Song MP3's, and possibly
Favourite Game Warez Sites.

To be honest, though, this is something I hope NWN deals with, because it
really is a terrible chore slogging through my custom portraits. Is asking
for thumbnail views in game too much? Or at the very least give us more
than XXXXXXXL.bmp as our filenames. At the moment I'm trying to catalogue
the images into some sort of workable order using Irfanview and a few text
files, so it would be great if things like this could be imported into
Infinity Engine games.

I just had a thought : That scar tissue might be some sort of effort to
represent Irenicus's efforts with those famed sharp knives. Well, at least
it explains it.

Possible Warez Sites ?

He Derville, someone is using your account.

I use the portrait manger from TeamBG [at least I *think* it's a TeamBG
product]. It handles long file names without a problem so I can have
character level and stat info in the name. The 'Gallery' functionality lets
me view them 32 at a time and it's easy to skip from folder to folder. I
just shorten the name when I copy them into my portraits folder ready to
import into a game.
I keep the game portraits folder as clear as possible. I've already chosen
character portraits before a game so the in-game functionality is all I've
ever needed.

It's been a long time since I've looked over at TeamBG, but I'll go and
check some time if that portrait manager is still available. Sounds like
just the thing I need, if it makes life easier for me to manage my ever
expanding collection.

As for picking portraits before the game starts <sheepish> I never actually
thought of doing that </sheepish>. I guess I prefer to roll up characters
on the fly, and then pick the portrait which most closely matches whatever
I've come up with. Which reminds me, I probably need some more pictures of
the women from Charmed, to serve as custom Mages for my parties.

Nah, it's just a tester for new "My Favourite ...." directories to be
included in "Windoze XP2: The Revenge". Sounds good that, almost as good as
the "Please Reinstall DirectX-Box". Maybe M$ have got something good going
with their naming conventions. Or maybe everyone will realise that these
are not at all exciting names.
