Unfortunately, I never got the portraits working Aristiana's 'Long
Way'. I don't have software on this machine that will give me
.tga format files. I *was* able to convert to .tga on another
machine and import the files to my portraits folder but NWN didn't
want to know :-(
However, the 'Short Way' gave me enough to go on. This method
makes use of NWN's ability to do the .jpg to .tpa file conversion.
Originally, it was based on placing a single .jpg file placed in
the portraits folder and letting NWN do the conversion. There are
potentially quality problems though.
1) I got around the quality problem by cropping and sizing five
separate .jpg files within Microsoft Photo Editor and placed them
all in my 'portraits' folder. My character is a dwarf called
Suren so the files were SurenH.jpg [256x400 pixels], SurenL.jpg
[128x200], SurenM.jpg [64x100], SurenS.jpg [32x50] and SurenT.jpg
[16x25].
Note that they were *not* on the extended canvasses. NWN dealt
with that for me :-)
Now the console bit :
2) The console gives a yellow ' > ' prompt in the top left hand
corner of the screen. Aristiana suggests this is initiated by
typing '~'. The tilde didn't work for me. I had to use ' ¬ '
[top left of the keyboard - below the 'esc' key].
3) Type : "ConvertPortrait SurenH" without the quotes and
without the .jpg extension.
The console command line turned green and disappeared after a few
seconds. NWN created five files in the 'portraits' folder from my
SurenH.jpg file
These were SurenHH.tga, SurenHL.tga, SurenHM.tga, SurenHS.tga and
Suren HT.tga files. It had resized my 256x400 all the way down
to 16x25! - no wonder there were quality problems.
I was able to discard all of the .tga files except SurenHH.tga
from which I removed the duplicated 'H'.
NWN had also extended the canvasses [in black] to give the extra
portion at the bottom of the portrait!
4) I repeated the console command with the SurenL.jpg, SurenM.jpg,
SurenS.jpg and SurenT.jpg files. Again I discarded all but the
SurenLL.tga, SurenMM.tga, SurenSS.tga, and SurenTT.tga files and
removed the duplicated capital.
As a result, I am left with a single .tga file for each of my
input .jpg files.
The one strange feature? - Apparently Suren can be male or female
:-)
[even with M_ or F_ prefixes, the portrait appears in both
lists]!

It certainly gets the portraits into the game but unfortunately causes the
game to crash whenever the player or the game attempts to save.
