As I mentioned in my previous post (quoted by Mr. Merciless) - which is a footnote from my _Church of Satan_ book - credit for the interesting idea that "Baphomet" [or its earlier medievalisms] might have come from _Ba-neb-tettu_ goes to Joseph Daniels (II* CS, then II* TS). That also would dovetail nicely into the Baphomet = "Goat of Mendes" ("Mendes" being the Greek name for _Ba-neb-tettu_).
When I joined the CS in 1969, I figured out the goat and the pentagram. What didn't make sense to me was why, if this were the Church of Satan, Leviathan's name was on its emblem instead of Satan.
The easy answer is (a) that's how Anton got the emblem from Bessy, and (b) Bessy couldn't fit the Hebrew spelling of "Satan" into five letters.
You could get around this by replacing the Hebrew with S-A-T-A-N, but then you'd lose the "mystery".
Apparently the Ba-neb-tettuites worshipped a ram-headed god similar to Amon, not a goat per se, but what the heck. They both have horns, after all. When in 1970 I painted a Baphomet for the Nineveh Grotto's ritual chamber in Louisville, I didn't have a goat handy, so used my Irish Setter Brandy for a model. Just drew on some horns. 5,000 years from now some archaeologist will find that emblem and there will be all sorts of fresh puzzling about the animal on the Baphomet. :-)
