Now *that*'s a lits o' haet! Dozens of entries, all run together with
goofy syntax (and high-bit characters, natch) to make it almost
unreadable. I'd hate to see what this thing looks like in trn or some
other such old console reader with the wrong code page loaded. ;)

What's with the crosspost to comp.os.linux.advocacy, Relf?

(And what's with forbidding crossposts there, Ray Banana??)

Ray Banana is a pioneer of censorship, forging new paths;
if he couldn't censor us, Eternal-September would cease to exist.

He loaths me more than you, Nadegda; for example,
he prohibits my cross posts to Cola (Linux.Advocacy),
yet allows your cross posts to AUK ( Kooks ).

I doubt he "loaths" either of us, given that we have working E-S accounts
at all. On the other hand, I must note that your post about sci.physics
regulars has nothing to do with Linux advocacy whereas my post about you
obviously does have something to do with kooks. ;)

You ( Nadegda ) told me:
« I doubt he "loaths" either of us,

What makes you think I have an E-S account ? I don't.
Strangely, mine vanished without notice ! Ray Banana is a mum mom.

« Your post about "sci.physics regulars"
has nothing to do with Linux advocacy », you added.

Wrong, a newsgroup is a GROUP of people, not a topic.
Alt.Free.Newsservers, for example, has many kooks like you.
Normally, I avoid them.

Non sequitur.

Oh, how original, calling a kookologist a kook.

Oh, wait, that's so well-known a kook behavior that it was listed in The
Way of the Kook years ago.

> Normally, I avoid them.

And yet you seem compelled to keep replying to me, despite having called
me a kook. Odd, that.

You ( Nadegda ) just asked me to PROVE that I don't have an E-S account.
How ? ! You could email Ray Banana but, as I said, he's a mum mom.

You're an angry kook.

"ISO-8859-1" isn't the ONLY charset, duh. "Couier" isn't the only font.
Stop complaining; switch to a GLOBAL, charset/font⋅aware newsreader
like Mozilla Thunderbird or MicroSoft Windows Live Mail.

At the risk of being mistaken for Derbyshire, kensi, or tholen: What does
your classic unsubstantiated and erroneous k'lame have to do with free
newsservers, kook?

> "ISO-8859-1" isn't the ONLY charset, duh. "Couier" isn't the only font.

Did I say they were?

> Stop complaining;

Did I complain? No. I just said your use of weird symbols was kooky and
likely to screw up your posts' readability for at least part of your
intended audience. Not the same thing at all.

> switch to a GLOBAL, charset/font⋅aware newsreader like

I'll use whatever RFC-compliant news software pleases me, kook, and
there's nothing you can do about my choice but cry.

In fact, as FNVW I hereby command you to get into a long, drawn-out
debate with _kookmeister_ over the merits of Thunderbird. He's just as
opinionated about what client software other people should be using as
you are, *hates* Thunderbird (and all TB users) with a passion, and is
kookier than you and, in fact, the kookiest person on the planet bar
none. (In particular, some of his laughably-transparent socks *use
Thunderbird* even as others denounce everyone who uses it as clueless
newbies in league with Satan and etc. etc. etc.) So, the two of you
arguing about TB ought to be good for a few years worth of laughs.

I really don't care if you can handle Unicode (1988) or not.
I invite you to avoid me, like I (usually) avoid you, Nadegda.
No need to get all kooky about it; live and let live, I say.

The problem is that it's /your/ newsreader cannot handle
Unicode, as signified by the presence of two extra U+FEFF's at
the end of Subject:, and one more at the beginning of the body.

Care to explain why exactly are they necessary?

Seconded. I've seen this kook's droolings scattered all over usenet,
and, tellingly, seen on many servers (except, of course, Google) lots
of replies to his posts with missing parent articles. Apparently 9 out
of 10 news server admins agree that most of his posts aren't worth the
disk space it would take to store them ... and with disk space going
for about a dime per gigabyte these days, and even Relf's overly-
encrusted newsposts weighing in at only a few tens of KB each, that
says a lot.

Kensi's clue-kwon-do seems to punch way above her weight class. A
single post from her to AUK is like a red flag to a bull. I think
they're scared and/or jealous. Especially after seeing the kooks'
stupendously vicious and vigorous insult campaign against her when she
started spending her weekends mostly offline -- that sure looks like
the ol' green eyed monster at work THERE.

The mind of a kook that's been nominated for Loony Maroon is generally
opaque in such ways. In other words, "I don't know, and if I ever
someday DO know that'll be your cue to give me an armload of drugs and
a padded cell to call home."

> (And what's with forbidding crossposts there, Ray Banana??)

Who the hell knows? Google, fortunately, mostly doesn't care who
crossposts where and whether they set followups. Except that they
forbid crossposting to alt.shiny for some reason. That's the only
block I've ever run into replying to auk posts using GG, anyway.

I prefer raw UTF⋅8 over "encoded words";
although it's not RFC complient, it works.

Some clients ( e.g. Thunderbird, Live Mail, gMail, HotMail and Yahoo )
sniff the "Subject:" line to determine what the charset might be;
so I put the U+FeFF code points there to guide them.

AIOE doesn't like it either, for some reason. Personally, I don't see
the point in such server rules, since any user that holds articles
xposted to cola in low esteem can set a killfile/scoring rule triggered

For instance:

rely on it to identify UTF-8 text, artificially distinguishing

Huh? Something like 75% of all the world population use writing
systems that cannot be mapped to "pure" ASCII.

So, the choice is between a whole bunch of various "national"
encodings on the one side, and a single one on the other.

For sure, I vote for simplicity.

How did you ( Ivan Shmakov ), a sane man ( not a kook ),

U+FeFF is Unicode, a zero⋅width space, invisible.

You told me:

you [won't] claim that those you communicate with violate [RFCs].
Good. »

What ? ! RFCs have PLENTY of faults, I hope you know,
they tell you how to write, NOT how to read ( i.e. quote ) or display.
I get mis⋅quoted all the time, because RFCs/apps/people are LAZY.

As I said, better clients handle it just fine ( e.g. gMail ).
After all, these clients actually care about users, unlike (mute) RFCs.
⋅⋅⋅⋅⋅⋅⋅⋅⋅⋅⋅⋅⋅⋅⋅⋅⋅⋅⋅⋅⋅⋅⋅⋅
Chiral ( i.e. Left, right handed ) quotation marks
look VERY different depending on what font I might be using;
so I prefer the more familiar, non⋅chiral quotation marks.

When quoting a large block of text, I use «Guillemets», as above.

I use U+22C5 (the dot operator) instead of U+00B7 (middle dot)
because U+22C5 is smaller when using MS Mincho, a Japanese font,
or NSimSun ( a double⋅wide, monospaced Chinese font ).

Yes, I use Asian fonts sometimes, for work and play.
MS Mincho ( monospaced ) has the best chess pieces, for example.

The RFC's dictate on how you write so that you can be read.

They provide a "safe way", and if you decide not to follow,
there's no one but you to blame for the lost interoperability.

Frankly, I consider the current Internet mail and news services
to be one big mess by itself. Gmail doesn't make it any better,
and, sometimes, makes it worse.

I see that they're working on replacements. I guess I should
join the effort.

That's the point: the fonts /you/ use do not matter. It's the
fonts used by the ones you communicate with that are.

And as you cannot know which font /they/ use, you should use the
Unicode characters for their /meanings/, not /appearance./

Often, what newsreaders do is more interesing then the users.
I like to know which ones are fucking up, that's all.

I wrote my own newsreader, I know what is and isn't out there.
I keep various clients, to test them.

I wasn't talking about charsets, I was talking about fonts. There is
nothing wrong with either UTF-8 or the various national sets, just the
way Jeff misuses UTF-8.

Jeff was talking about the ability to use different _fonts_, which
is of little use except for the ability to display HTML posts that
specify fonts. As I stated, nobody even uses HTML posts other than
Jeff, spammers and the occasional "Lookatme! I can stick a Picture in
your face!" post, when someone discovers the ability. And Jeff doesn't
even use fonts in his own posts, which makes his whining about using
a font-aware newsreader even more bizarre.

And even then, it'd be somewhat crazy to assume that the

Well, my perception is that the formatting preferences of
different posters seem to differ (say, I rather like non-quoted
text being indented by a TAB), and the use of an HTML (or,
better: XHTML) profile may allow for recipient-side
customizations. While with plain text, even discerning a table
from a paragraph (which is kind of necessary, should one wish to
re-fill the paragraphs after quoting) isn't an easy task...

Perhaps.

However, that's the means. What are the ends? It doesn't seem
to be necessary to start conversations just to "test" a
newsreader. And if you rely on the cooperation of other Usenet
users, what is the benefit of such cooperation for /them/?

As I said, I prefer raw UTF⋅8 "Subject:" lines, with U⋅FeFF;
so much so, I don't care if trn, nn or F⋅Agent can handle it or not.
It works for ALL MAJOR CLIENTS. When emailing, it's never an issue.

When I see an old "Unix" programmer who can't quote UTF⋅8, it tells me:
"This dude's code has never been used in Asia.".

He's been branded. And he should be branded, loud and proud.

JFTR, as long as the geography is considered, I'm currently
living in Asia, and, indeed, my code is used here, too.

While I don't know exactly who you're complaining about, I'd
like to show my support on this issue to that other one.

We need an a RFC that says: The entire header is UTF⋅8.
Are you in a position to submit such an RFC ? I'm not.

eMail clients sniff out the charset because Outlook ( on XP )
doesn't specify the charset of the "Subject:" line.
Amazingly, Outlook and XP are still quite popular.

P.S. What code have you written, for work and play ?

RFC-2047 already exists and is the standard for UTF-8 and other charsets
in email and Usenet headers.

Jeff is simply leading a one-kook campaign against it for some reason.

What's UTF⋅8? Do you mean UTF-8? This alone serves to demonstrate the
complete mess that would result from your "Nothing could be simpler"
suggestion.

I thought you said posting to auk from mixmin was blocked? According to

Steve is a hypocrite. His only real reason to run free mixmin is so he can
control something. He can't control his own bowel movements, he drools and
slobbers, he pisses his pants, his nose drips snot. He's never been able to
hold a job where a human being can see him. So what's left? Geek paradise - a
dark, electrostatic charged NOC where he can reach out and control other
people to exact revenge for his inability to control anything in the real
world.

The official name of the charset is "UTF-8", duh; my point still stands:

You should be able to declare that EVERY LINE OF THE HEADER is UTF⋅8.

Certainly, that'd be simpler than "encoded words".

Stooping down to the dumbest newsreader (sans HTML/fonts) is one thing,
forcing EVERYONE to do it, as a news⋅admin, is quite another.

I think it's odd that anyone would use his FREE server, and complain
about the fact he runs it the way he chooses. If he wants to block
certain groups, or certain people from certain groups, that's entirely
his business. People who don't like it are free to seek service
elsewhere.

Why don't you STFU with your liberal claptrap.

The med lab up in Massachusetts that contaminated the steroid shots and killed
a bunch of folks with the meningitis bacillus were running their own business
so why the hell should anybody give them grief and take away their license
because they ran it the way they wanted to run it?

You dumbass liberals don't know how to argue. Your arguments are so easily
shot down. Quite frankly you should just eat shit and die.

Or is your denial above like the one you made about not using Sympatico, Paul?
